Alycha is one of the plum species, her sister and at the same time one of the ancestors.
Until recently It was known only as a wild plant, widespread in the south: in the Caucasus, in the Crimea, in Central Asia. Studying it as a potentially new fruit culture began at the end of the 20-ies, and there is probably no other plant that has become an industrial garden culture in such a short time. Alycha also settled in the family gardens. A year after planting, the plum begins to bear fruit and is characterized by high regular harvests. In the third or fourth year, harvests increase to 30-40 kg from a tree, and by the age of ten they reach 300 kg or more. Unfortunately, according to the quality of the fruits, the first varieties were not far from the wild ancestors: Crimean and Georgian cherry plum. They are more suitable for home preparations and original Caucasian dishes. From them prepare a variety of spicy seasonings - kvtsarahi, tkemali.
But a cherry has a valuable property - the ability to interbreed with other types of plum and even representatives of other species: cherry, cherry sand, apricot, peach. It's something scientists began to use to create hybrid large-bodied varieties.
The first such varieties - Abundant, Dessert, Violet dessert - are obtained from crossing Crimean cherry plum with Chinese plum, and the mass of fruits reaches 50 in them. Thus, varieties appeared that marked the beginning of a fundamentally new species of cherry plum - cherry plum, or hybrid.
If only recently it was accepted that alycha is a southern culture, now it is rapidly conquering the gardens of Russia. Of particular interest for the middle strip are the varieties Shater, Traveler, Colon, and to the south - Granite. They originated from cherries, American and Chinese plum, are late blooming and therefore are not afraid of spring frosts - the main cause of low yield in stone fruit crops.
Variety plum Kolonovidnaya: is interesting with an unusual kind of tree: a narrow, compressed crown consists of a conductor and only three or four branches, which completely, like a sea-buckthorn, are covered along the entire length with fruits weighing up to 40. This "column" is so compact that it allows thickened planting even up to 0, 5 m between plants. In addition, it looks very decorative. Wonderful for Voronezh, Belgorod, Astrakhan and Rostov regions such varieties as Sarmatka, Sigma, Chuk, Lavina. Fruits up to 30 g, dark red, delicious. The maturity period is medium and medium-term.
A whole family of new varieties for the central strip of Russia was created in the Moscow Agricultural Academy. Timiryazev. These are Zarnitsa, Anastasia, Timiryazevskoe, Yarilo, Monomakh ripening in early July; grades of medium ripening - Nesmeyan, Gold of the Scythians; ripening in September Cleopatra. The fruits are all fragrant, tasty, with a separating stone (except Scythian Gold), reddish shades (Scythian gold is bright yellow). They are all sufficiently self-fertile. They received the name with their eastern origin in mind, and Monomakh for the shape of fruits resembling Monomakh's cap. It is still timid, but winter-resistant varieties of breeding of the Belarusian Research Institute of Fruit Growing come into Russian gardens: Pramen, Vetraz, Mart, Vitba, Asaloda.
