HOW TO OWN YOUR HANDS UPDATE OLD GATES AT HOLIDAYS
Last year, we put a new fence. An expensive pleasure, I must say. The brigadier offered to make a new gate, but 20-25 did not want to pay thousands more. The metal on the old gate was thick, so I decided to save and restore it.
The gates have stood for over 20 years. the boards are slightly rotten, and the metal frame is a little rusty. But the gates had already completely sunk and the last 10 years were closing with a slight bias. New, dear, the gate in a couple of years could skew, so that you can not close. In our Finno-Ugric swamp anything happens. And if trouble can happen, it will happen. At first glance, the work was easier than ever - to replace the slightly rotten boards, that's all.
Adventures began immediately in the nearest construction market: it closed. There was no other market for planed 100 x 20 mm spruce boards - this is a “deficit” in Russia.
The following weekend we went to the market in Novopetrovsk - everything is there, even the glazier ... The boards were brought on the same day, but half turned out to be a blatant marriage. The seller, without further ado, accepted the claim, sent a car for the marriage and returned the money. Immediately bought the material in another place - each board was selected.
I started the global restoration project of the old gate with painting the boards. The better the tree is painted, the longer it will stay. If there is an opportunity to paint in the room - it is necessary to paint in the room. He painted the boards and bars for the gates under the zastrehoy - there is a lot of space and it is well blown.
Covered with tung oil "Drevno Kron" (I had two started cans from previous projects), color - "tick". Oil applied conventional economic sponge. The boards withstood the week, although even with a high humidity it was enough for a day so that the coating would normally dry.
Directly to the restoration started next weekend. To begin with, it was necessary to paint the metal frame of the gate. I didn’t save much here: I bought a can of Ham-Might - paint with rust and copper color. At first, I tried to remove rust with a screwdriver by inserting a metal brush into it. Rust departed very reluctantly.
It turned out that it was easier to partially remove the rust by hand - to walk around the whole frame with a large sandpaper. On Friday, it was enough for me to sand and paint the frame from the outside.
I really liked the Hammeraite hammer paint: it lay flat, it didn’t smell much and grabbed almost an hour later (in the sun, at 25 ° C). According to the law of meanness, it started to rain in two hours, but the paint was almost dry.
Old wood shot the next day. I sanded and painted the inner surface of the frame.
For fixing the bars inside the metal corner drilled additional holes with a diameter of 5 mm. The 10-mm drill made tapered grooves for the screw heads.
Now it was necessary to attach the bars inside the metal frame - the boards would be mounted on them. The bars are bolted to the frame with 35 x A mm screws (a 3-4 screw for each timber).
But the boards are not yet ready for installation. At first I planned to make the gate solid. like before. But the wife and mother-in-law wanted the gate to repeat the shape of the fence. In this, perhaps, there is a great truth of truth. Thats that the boards at the gate will be packed with a gap, as in a picket fence. greatly reduced sail. Previously, the wind sometimes swayed the gates so that it curved the hinges of the castle.
Fence height - 180, see the gate height will be the same.
The stencil used to round the board served as Hammeraite Bank.
Rounding sawed with a jigsaw - it turned out not very smooth.
Spila covered with oil.
Boards are attached to the bars above and below with 35 x A mm screws. A new magnetic bit was very useful: it freed her left hand, it became comfortable to hold the board in the desired position.
The boards are installed with a span of 20 mm. The distance between them made the pattern. served as a piece of board with such thickness. It seems exactly happened.
All heads of screws after installation are painted over with Hammeraight. Instead of a brush, he used a cotton swab — it is very convenient for her to paint over small objects. And the budget - the brush is not spoiled. If the heads are not painted over, then in a year the screws will start to rust, and ugly smudges will appear.
Afterword When I was finishing the gate, a neighbor came out and asked for a sledge hammer. Ya naturally wondered why she was with him. It turned out. that its gates began to close poorly, as it kicked out a pole together with a large poured concrete block. Now it was necessary to knock down the concrete and set the pillar in place.
It is a shame that the rail gate was installed to him only three years ago, and they cost very well. So the answer to the question of restoring the gate or ordering new ones is obvious. I have received confirmation that the restoration is more rational and budget.
PLUGS FOR POSTS OWN HANDS
The epic of the restoration of the gate is not so simple.
The last chord was the manufacture of plugs for the pillars - so that the water does not get inside. Now you can buy poles immediately with plastic plugs. But the old master made the gate from the material at hand 25 years ago.
Then about the stubs and did not think. He made the posts from thick-walled two-inch pipes - in principle, they were unpainted and without stubs 30 would have stood for years. But after the restoration, I had the feeling that something was still missing.
The easiest option is to make a cap from a plastic bottle. A bottle of tea "Lipton" capacity D.5 l fit perfectly. Painted "Hammerait" and planted on a pole. The fact that this plug does not like the mother-in-law, I was / is faithful.
The second variant of the plug was cut out with a board saw from scraps of the board. A small circle sawed with a saw-drill 50 mm. large - 70 mm.
According to the general idea, the stub was supposed to repeat the shape of the boards. Details of the construction are glued together by “Tightbond”.
Build a little sanding on the screwdriver.
Solemn installation of the second plug. The lower cylinder freely enters the pipe, but after fitting it will be wrapped with electrical tape, and the plug will tightly plug the hole.
The second prototype is installed in its place.
