CULTIVATING BLACKBERRY IN COLD REGIONS - LANDING AND CARE
Growing a blackberry because of its poor frost resistance in a cold region is not an easy task. Spouses Oksana and Lev ALEXANDROVY from the Irkutsk region found their solution ...
- Because of the late flowering, the blackberry is not afraid of spring frosts. But in late August and early September, flowers and immature berries suffer from low temperatures. The real test for plants is the winter cold. Therefore, we cultivate blackberry bespishnyh varieties in the greenhouse, explains Lev.
- Saplings with a closed root system can be planted from April to November. Place them in a row through 1,5-2. Fill the landing pit with fertile soil mixed with 2-3 buckets of humus and 0,5 l ash. After planting, we mulch with a layer of humus in 10-12 (see). In spring, we direct shoots of replacement along a row at a height of no more than 20 cm from the ground. And as soon as they stretch to 40 cm, we pinch the tip for the development of lateral shoots (the harvest of the next year is formed on them).
Even in the greenhouse blackberry carefully shelter for the winter. At the end of October, we cut the leaves, bundle them in bundles, we will whitewash the white-washed mixture. Bundles are laid on boards or boxes, sheltered from above with sprouts, then with non-woven material. Above the plants to protect the shoots from breaking set a light low frame. This construction is covered with a straw layer about 30 cm, sacking (or spanbond) and again with a straw layer in 40 cm.
Lev Alexandrov clarifies:
- In regions where blackberries are grown in open ground, you can do without a second layer of straw, and cover the first layer with a film. As the snow falls, I advise more throw it on the bushes.
In early April, gardeners gradually (as warming) uncover blackberries. After removing lapnik, the bundles of shoots are covered with a film so that they do not freeze at night, and do not burn in the sun during the day - the plants need time to adapt. As far as thawing the soil is watered with warm water. With the onset of stable warm weather, when buds begin to bloom, the shoots are finally opened and tied up on a trellis with a height of 1,5-2 m.
The main care for blackberries in the summer is watering, fertilizing with fertilizers (similar to raspberries), picking berries. Splinter shoots cut out before the start of the shelter.
