CURRING CURRANT AND GOOSEBERRY IN OCTOBER MONTH
Experienced gardeners know that the pruning procedure for berry bushes, as well as fruit trees, is an important event.
When creating suitable conditions for currant and gooseberry bushes, one can expect good fruiting from them for 20 years. October is the right time to prune and form currants and gooseberries.
The weather is still relatively warm, but the plants are already starting to sink into sleep, the leaves are already fallen. Just in the days of October, I cut bushes.
First of all, I determine: why am I going to cut the bush this year. Typically, summer residents pursue several goals with this operation: updating the plant, preventing its thickening and finally the formation of a bush. Obviously, if I update the branches of the bush every year, then there will be no old and sick among them, and new shoots will receive more nutrients and better bear fruit. I do sections of old branches at the level of the soil, and even below.
I cut off very young bushes almost at the root, leaving 3-4 buds on each branch. Next year they will grow so that it will be possible to form a bush.
On two-year-old bushes, I remove young (zero) shoots, which only take strength from other branches, while they do not bear fruit and thicken the bush. Of these, I leave the most powerful branches - 3-5 pieces.
Trimming heavily thickened bushes is better to stretch for 2 years. I cut 3-4-year-old adult bushes in the same way as two-year-old bushes: I remove weak, zero shoots, well thin out the middle of the bush where there are weak and underdeveloped shoots that thicken it. I shorten the tops of the branches so that the bush is well formed.
In the fifth year of the bush’s life, I’m already doing rejuvenation - I delete the old branches at the very base, because they no longer bear fruit. This cropping scheme is the simplest. It will give you the opportunity to get as many berries as possible, because on the bush there will be branches of different years.
As for the gooseberry pruning, I follow it in the same way as currants, given that the prickly culture does not like shading. This means that all thickening zero shoots must be cut. Without regret, I also delete all old and diseased branches, because this will only make the plant easier. Harvests of currants and gooseberries always make me happy!
Instead of a bush, it is quite possible to grow a currant tree. For this, the seedling is planted vertically and all shoots are removed, except for one.
