SEEDLINGS PLANTED. QUESTIONS REMAIN
For beginning gardeners, after planting fruit trees, sometimes questions arise. We answer the most frequent.
The soil in the pit strongly settled, the root neck is exposed. How does this threaten a seedling?
- Too small a landing leads to the fact that after the subsidence of the soil, the roots are exposed and dry. With deep planting, especially on clay soil, trees grow poorly and may even die. The tree should be planted so that after the soil has settled, its root neck coincides with the soil surface.
A small landing can be corrected by adding earth.
Harder with a deep landing. We fix it this way: in the fall or in the spring, on one side of the tree, roots are cut at a distance of 30-50 cm from the trunk. From the same side, the tree is gradually raised with the help of levers, and the resulting void under the roots is filled with soil. However, such an operation is successful only in young plants.
How to protect a seedling from possible frost damage?
- It is advisable to spud the trunk with earth to a height of 30-35 cm. In spring, as soon as the soil thaws, the plant is bored.
Why, despite a neat planting, are seedlings usually sick for a long time?
- Transplantation (we are replanting seedlings) - an artificial technique, one might say, unnatural, not found in nature. It grossly disrupts the vital activity of plants. In apple tree seedlings, for example, after digging, no more than 25% of the main roots remain, and fouling (buds) breaks off by 90%.
The second reason: seedlings from the nursery are most often dug up prematurely, long before the normal completion of their growth, when they have not yet accumulated a sufficient amount of reserve substances, without which it is impossible for them to take root. And one more thing: from the time of excavation to planting, even with the most careful handling of seedlings, a lot of moisture is lost, their viability is significantly reduced.
How often do you need to water a newly planted seedling?
- Immediately after planting, 2-3 buckets of water are poured into the landing pit. In the future, the need for watering depends on the weather and the degree of desiccation of the soil. But in the fall in a temperate climate, precipitation is usually enough.
