HOW TO COVER THE BLACKBERRY FOR WINTER - PREPARATION FOR THE FROST
In the spring, I planted an unbroken blackberry on the plot.
The seller warned that without shelter, it could freeze.
If you can not do without insulation, then how to protect the plant from the cold?
Ivan Petrovich MOSKALEVICH
Currently, old blackberry species are gradually being replaced by shipless varieties. Their advantage is high productivity, highly productive appearance of the fruit and the absence of thorns that make it difficult to care for the plant and pick berries. However, even in relatively moderate conditions in Belarus, new varieties of blackberries regularly freeze, which necessitates their winter shelter.
Young plantings of the first year shelter more carefully than adult mature bushes.
Bend to the ground
The main condition for a good wintering of plants is their bending to the ground to a horizontal position.
This procedure must be started already in June, when young shoots, reaching a height of approximately 30 cm, easily bend. They are carefully bent parallel to the ground, fixed with metal studs, and from that moment they will grow horizontally. In autumn, you just need to tie them, cut the leaves and tops, shorten the side shoots of the second order.
If such work was not carried out in the summer, then it is necessary to lay blackberry branches on the ground with great care. With thin, this is done easily, and thick ones have to be bent in several stages, which can take up to three days. All shoots must be bent in the opposite direction from the place of their growth from the root neck. Otherwise, they may break off.
Ways to shelter a blackberry for the winter
The most reliable and proven way to shelter a blackberry is spruce spruce branches, it can be combined with juniper shoots. Branches of spruce with non-shedding needles well protect plants from pests, the winter sun and sudden changes in temperature. Lapnik is laid under and on top of shoots.
But this natural material alone may not be enough. It can be supplemented with a canvas of an old dense spunbond (60 g / sq. M), which is placed on top.
With another method, in a row with a blackberry in October, while the earth has not yet frozen, it is necessary to establish arcs and pull a spanbond on them. On cold winter days, the ends of the tunnel should be closed, and with warming in early March, they should be opened. In any case, ventilation of plants during prolonged thaws is mandatory.
However, one spanbond is also unable to protect plants from the cold frosty wind. A lush pillow of dry leaves, filled with air, is an excellent insulation. A layer of leaves with a thickness of 15-20 cm prevents the rapid freezing of the soil, especially in the most dangerous frost-free conditions for plants.
It is necessary to ensure that the blackberry shoots do not touch the covering material in order to avoid burns to the kidneys by frost or the sun. As a result of this effect, necrosis gradually forms around the growth points, which covers the entire shoot in a ring over the 2-3 month.
As insulation material, you can use snow. So, if on the surface the air temperature can drop to minus 30 degrees, then it will not be lower than 5-6 degrees under a snow layer with a thickness of 20 cm. If there is a lot of it in the garden, then you can not worry about blackberry plantations in it.
However, when warming, you can not leave the land near the landings bare. Snow must be taken from paths, ditches and vacant lots. Otherwise, the soil may freeze between the rows, which will adversely affect the root system. It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that heavy wet snow can break off the shoots, so it must be shaken off.
A plastic film cannot be used for warming, since in the sun the air under it quickly heats up, which leads to the appearance of the so-called greenhouse effect. In a warm and humid environment, plants wake up and buds begin to sprout, and hardening of plants is lost. The consequences of this are deplorable: from subsequent frosts or night cold, swollen kidneys ahead of time will certainly die.
