Growing Dwarf Tomatoes - DWARF. TITLES AND WHAT WE ARE FOR
Tomato is one of the most beloved vegetables. Therefore, the number of its varieties is constantly growing, surprising us with the fruits of unimaginable colors and a variety of taste. And, of course, I would like to see many of them in my small area. But what if you still need to plant potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, peppers on it ...
Reading the fairy tale “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to our children, we could not imagine that these mysterious creatures would one day come to our aid ...
WHY DWARF TOMATOES ARE FAVORABLE TO GROW
Somehow traveling through the garden between the tomato bushes of the world famous series Dwarf ("Dwarf"), the main "expert", my two-year-old grandson said: "These are Christmas trees." Indeed, the structure of the bush “gnomes” are more like dwarf trees than tomato plants. Having tested some varieties of this series (last year about forty varieties grew in my garden right away), I became convinced of the merits of the “gnomes".
First of all, he drew attention to the compactness of the bush and its ability to develop in a limited area. Tomatoes can be grown even in pots. Caring for the “gnomes" is much easier than for indeterminate (tall) varieties. Plants require minimal formation; most varieties, due to limited growth, do not need support. Mathematics is implacable: one square meter can accommodate nine plants from the Dwarf series.
In addition, they have a very powerful root system and a thick central trunk with small stepsons, which makes the plant more stable, the fruits almost do not touch the soil. The indisputable advantage of the “gnomes" over other varieties is the large wrinkled leaves of the potato type, which reliably protect the fruits from sunburn. Varieties of the “Gnome” series are very productive and pain-resistant.
DWARF TOMATO VARIETIES - TITLES
Today in our collection there are 60 varieties of tomatoes of the “Gnome” series. And they are all our favorites! Among the "Dwarves" with a bush height of up to 80 cm, the variety became the opening of the season Dwarf streak legal (Legal band). We liked the unusual color of the fruit (raspberry with dark purple, olive touches and stripes), delighted in their taste. At the beginning of fruit ripening, when the nights were still cool, their taste seemed fresh to me. But when the stable heat came, the flesh became very sweet and fragrant.
Dwarf Yukon Quest - a low-growing variety with fairly large fruits weighing up to 200 g. Like all pink-fruited, tomatoes of this variety have a sweet, balanced taste.
Sorts Jackass Green Dwarf (Green Donkey) and Jackass Yellow Dwarf (Yellow Donkey) have the same structure of the bush, size and shape of the fruit, and the pulp is very sweet, oily, with a rich fruity aroma.
It is difficult to tell about all the sweets from the Gnome series in one article, but the names of the varieties speak for themselves: Fredi Brandy, Tasty Wine, Sweet Firebird, Lemon Ice, Orange Cream, Sweet Sue, Tasmanian Chocolate, Chocolate Champion.
Among the “gnomes" there are varieties not only with fruits of traditional colors (red, pink, yellow, orange), but also green, chocolate, striped ... The names eloquently testify to this: Kelly Green, Golden Heart, Raspberry Sockeye Salmon, Mahogany, Striped Ento, Fred's Striped Tie, Purple Heart, Rainbow Haley, Rosella Bicolor, Shining Beauty, Lucky Curl, Uluru Ocher, Chocolate Lightning.
You can't help falling in love with the variety. Dwarf Beauty King. When you look at the fruits, it seems as if an inept artist sketched intricate lines and strokes of red and raspberry shades against a bright orange background. It turned out so well that I really want to try them. The core of the fruit looks no less appetizing: the oily flesh is painted in yellow, red and raspberry colors. And the taste combines honey sweetness and the aroma of tropical fruits.
Looks elegant on the beds Dwarf Firebird Sweet bashfully hiding her beauty from prying eyes and the scorching summer sun under an openwork outfit of leaves.
Many varieties of the Gnome series have Australian-American roots. So, Forokofay translated from the local dialect of the indigenous population of Australia means "red-yellow." Fruits are red with yellow rays, the flesh is marble, raspberry-orange. As befits bicolors, tomatoes are very sweet, with a peach flavor. These varieties are ideal for preparing various salads and homemade juices.
Dwarf Adelaide Festival (Adelaide Festival) striking in the unusual color of the fruit (a combination of red, emerald, chocolate and yellow shades). Pulp - marble tricolor, spicy-sweet with delicate acidity.
Dwarf Thong (Thong) - one of the smallest varieties of the series with a bush height of up to 60 cm. Admiration is caused by large wrinkled leaves, a “corset” that keeps the bush on weight, and fruits with a mosaic pattern on which brown and green shades are harmoniously interwoven. The taste qualities of fruits do not leave indifferent, they are sweetish with exotic fruity notes.
Varieties of Balkan striped tiger, Italian gold gypsy, Golden heart, Red heart, Kangaroo paw (yellow, green, brown), Lemon ice, Pink passion, Rosella purple are great for canning and pickling.
“Dwarves” attract attention not only with the beauty of powerful, compact, slender bushes, but also with the variety of shapes and colors of fruits. And their taste will satisfy even the most demanding gourmet. Hurry up and you get to know these wonderful tomatoes!
