HOW TO CORRECTLY PLANT A RODODENDRON ANSWERS A GARDEN CONSULTANT
"PINK TREE": SECRETS OF LANDING AND CARE
In a previous article, garden consultant Svetlana MOVCHAN from Moscow advised you, dear readers, how to choose a rhododendron and solve possible seedling problems. Now she will tell you how to properly plant a “pet” (late April, early May) and take care of it further.
CONDITIONS FOR RODODENDRON ROOTS
The landing pit is prepared quite wide, with a diameter of 80 cm, and about 40-50 cm in depth.
If you bought several seedlings, you can plant them with a small distance in one place, then plant them in a year.
It is better to make a flowerbed for rhododendrons just above the main level and strengthen the edges with stones, raw logs, etc. - over time, she will settle.
The soil for a group of adult plants is prepared immediately on the entire designated area, without planting pits.
Rhododendrons, like all heather, love sour, loose, moist. but not wet soils.
The substrate for filling the pit: land from the site (if clay, replace with peat or good garden soil), sand, coniferous litter (preferably pine), sour red peat - all in equal parts. You can add a little decomposed compost, leaf humus (or 5-6 l of vermicompost), a couple of handfuls of bone meal and 100 g of potassium sulfate. Mix everything, fill the pit and tamp lightly.
The root system of the rhododendron is very compact and fibrous, so the Doge adult plant transfers transplant without much damage.
PREPARING THE RODODENDRON SEEDLING FOR PLANTING
Soak the root lump and leave until the bubbles disappear. You can add “Fitosporin” or “Alirin”, humate, “Zircon” (according to the instructions) and “Kornevin” (half the recommended dose) to the water.
Remove the seedling from the solution, squeeze the lump slightly in a circle.
With a clean (!) Knife, remove from the coma the felt of the old roots (about 5 mm) so that nothing hinders the growth of the new ones. Next, a little "comb" com.
Rhododendron is planted as it was before the dew - the root of the neck remains at the level of the soil. DO NOT DEPTH IT!
Pour and mulch with horse ginger peat, coniferous litter, half-ripened leaves, crushed bark and cones, or a 10-15 cm layer of pre-piled sawdust. Since rhododendron has surface roots, the mulch will protect them from temperature extremes, drought, and its gradual decay will give additional food.
ABOUT FEEDING FOR RODODENDRON
In the first year after planting, you can not feed rhododendron, just water it a couple of times with a light solution of humate and in June carry out foliar top dressing (on leaves) with Citovit or liquid fertilizer EcoFus- (based on algae with a complete set of microelements in chelated form).
In the following years, in the following years, in the spring, add “Ecostyle” (a natural fertilizer containing soil mushrooms) or any other complex fertilizer for rhododendrons. After flowering, carefully break the inflorescences, especially on young rhododendrons. Conduct foliar top dressing with “Citovit” or “EcoFus” with the addition of “Fitosporin” or “Alirin”. If the weather is hot, dry, add Zircon to the solution. (All preparations are according to the instructions).
In a drought, water at least once a week. Sprinkle the mulch: if there is no peat or litter, the mowed grass will do, and the weeded weeds will come in handy if the "aristocrat" does not dry out while you are not in the area.
In mid-August, feed with potassium monophosphate (2 tsp / 10 l), under a young bush - 2 l of solution, under the old - 10 l.
In early September, reduce watering. At the end of the month, add potassium sulfate (2 tsp. - under the young bush and 2 tbsp. - under the old one) under the mulch, pour over it.
