REPAIR STRAWBERRY VARIETIES - ALTESS AND VIVARRA
Repairing varieties of garden strawberries make it possible to enjoy berries all summer. But often they are inferior in taste to ordinary summer varieties. Having studied the assortment of repair varieties, we selected the best ones by description. We bought and planted a couple of dozens of varieties on our site, watched their development in the open ground for 3 years, assessed their adaptability to our conditions, productivity and taste.
In the first year, the variety distinguished itself from the Netherlands Altess. Berries are tender to the flesh and aroma close to wild strawberries. They are beautifully conical in shape. In the heat and after cooling, bright red berries do not darken and do not lose their presentation. This quality will be appreciated by those who grow strawberries for sale, and customers will enjoy the excellent taste with nutmeg notes and pronounced aroma.
We grew plants of this variety on prepared soil with the addition of humus of 10 kg / sq. m and ash 200 g / sq. m. The harvest was excellent. The taste depended on the weather conditions of the season (in the cold and rainy summer of 2019, the taste was a little worse than in previous years, but in comparison with other repair varieties, the taste I year of Altessa turned out to be the best).
One of the drawbacks of the variety is that in the first year there were no whiskers at all, in the second year we were able to get only 2-3 outlets from each bush. Therefore, this variety must be grown separately to obtain berries and mustaches.
Another novelty is the variety Vivara. Although the taste was inferior to Altessa, thanks to a large beautiful berry and a high harvest, he became our favorite. This variety comes from Italy, but tolerates cold winters even without shelter. At the same time, we cover Altess with pine spruce for the winter.
Vivara is a repairing variety that is successfully grown both in open and in protected ground. This variety is one of the five most productive repairing varieties (up to 2 kg per bush per season, while Altess has an average of 700 g per bush). Berries are large and medium (30-40 g), little things practically never happen. Cone-shaped, juicy, dense, without crunch, with excellent taste. The self-pollinated variety, the ripening of berries and the formation of new flowers occurs in cycles, every 5-6 weeks. In the open ground, berry picking begins in late May and continues until frost.
Both varieties are highly resistant to disease. But the dangerous pests of strawberries (ticks, nematodes) can be affected. Therefore, buy seedlings in proven nurseries.

We use an old proven method of protection against these pests: we process the purchased strawberry seedlings in hot water. If the seedlings are in cups, we lower them “upside down” in a container with hot water (48 °). We monitor the temperature: it rises higher - the plants die, it turns out lower - the pests do not die. Processing time 15-20 minutes. Immediately after a hot bath, we cool the seedlings to a temperature of 10-15 °, immersing them in cold water for 15-20 minutes.
Whether plants are affected, you can still notice when buying seedlings. Tick: the leaf is deformed, wrinkled, becomes bubbly, becomes quite large spots (white spotting appears in spring - at the beginning of summer, brown - closer to autumn). Nematode: deformation of leaflets with constriction of veins inside, thickening and swelling of petioles, mustache, curvature and reduction of their length. If a nematode is found, the acquisition of seedlings should be abandoned, and it is better to destroy already acquired plants without sparing, even if the variety is very valuable.
