Why do the teeth
For the third season I have been cultivating garlic for various types of soil cultivation to compare the results. I'll describe how I grew garlic in the past season.
The predecessor, as always, chose the early cabbage. After harvesting the main crop, the bed was cleaned of the root residues, loosened by a frontal plane cut and sowed white mustard. As the cultivation of mustard, I will not describe. By the end of September, it had reached the height of 40-45 cm. It is still growing and growing, but the time for soil preparation under garlic was propped up, and in the first five days of October I cleaned it. The cut mustard was chopped, evenly scattered over the bed and poured EM-solution in the dilution of 1: 100 at the rate of 2 l / sq. M. m. Then half of the bed was treated with a plaster (frontal plane cutter) for 3-5 cm, and the second was dug with garden forks, without turning the seam, to the usual depth of 20-22, see. Further, until the planting, no work was done.
Landing
Before planting garlic made vlagozaradukovy watering at the rate of 40-45 l / kv. m, and after shaking out the soil, loosened by flat-cutting to a depth of up to 5 cm. By stretched cords cut the furrows to a depth of 7-8 cm. It should be noted that on the half of the bed, where there was small loosening, the buckler had to be moved with some effort.
Cultivation of garlic
After cutting the furrows began to plant teeth. Row spacing - 35 cm, in a row - 10 pcs. (large teeth) and a depth of 6-7 cm.
I want to dwell on the error of many of our summer residents and truck farmers about the size of the cloves of garlic. Most of them for landing select small heads, and hence small teeth, and large heads of garlic go to the market.
Summer residents often do not take into account that garlic, unlike onions, has a distinct property: it selects smaller teeth for planting and the heads grow smaller. In the second year I did it - they will become even smaller.
Talking with experienced gardeners, I was convinced - you want to get garlic heads with a good “peach” every year, plant soot and teeth of such a “peach”. My neighbors and I have firmly adopted this rule.
It so happened in our region that they plant garlic after the Veil of the Day. after 15-25 October. Garlic still has time to feel like a winter culture, painlessly to endure the winter and usefully spend the spring. The root system, which has been formed since the autumn, allows garlic to successfully vegetate in a blissful cool time.

It happened in 2009. Shoots of garlic appeared in the winter and at the beginning of the second decade of February had 2-3 small leaves. They came out to the surface of the soil with thin needles. But at the end of February it got colder. At night, the temperature dropped to 2-5 ° C. I listened carefully to weather forecasts. There was no hope of snow falling in our area. I had to wait only for warming. And finally, it has come. I walked like a child along an inter-row path, tugging at the ends of leaves - they were vibrant, resilient, dark green.
One of the requirements of garlic is a sufficient amount of moisture, although it consumes less moisture than other bulbous ones. And as soon as the soil on the bed was ripe, I grabbed a small flat cutter in my hands and loosened the row spacings, since during the winter the soil became very compacted, especially on shallow cultivation, and an unfavorable water-air regime was created for the plants. In the first days of spring, there was enough moisture for the garlic plants. It should be noted that from the end of the second ten-day period of March and the whole of April, no precipitation fell.
It is known that the root system of garlic, like most bulbous ones, is not deep, and in the south the upper layer of the soil loses moisture quickly. This was shown by the plants themselves. Until the middle of April, the tips of the leaves of garlic were green. As the temperature rose, they began to turn yellow. I decided to water. And although there is a well on the site, I preferred pre-heating the water with glazed water. The bed is small (2,25 sq. M.) And pour on it 11 lek water is not so difficult. 29 April watered the EM-solution in the dilution of 1: 1000 from the calculation of 2 l solution at 1 sq. M. m.
The first decade of May was rainy, and 12 May, after a little rain, I made a top-dressing herbal infusion. At 5 m of the garden poured a bucket of this solution. Whether it helped, did not help, but 28 May repeated such feeding. Rowing of the aisles was carried out regularly after each rain or watering. Loosening was carried out with a small flat cutter, a large flat-top was not in my favor. Garlic cleaned 9 July. The heads were dense and had a fresh appearance. Harvesting has shown the advantages of deep loosening (see the table).
Minor processing significantly influenced the size of the garlic head. The density of the soil did not allow the teeth, and consequently the heads, to grow.

So called bulblets allow to grow winter garlic. There are in this process their subtleties.
Buns are a valuable planting material. Plants from them are obtained more viable, healthy, strong, less affected by diseases and pests. In addition, commodity garlic is saved, a large part of which goes to planting. I cut off the arrows as soon as the cases in which the bulbs are located begin to crack.
It is important not to be late, as bulboks quickly begin to fall off.
Cut off arrows 15-20 in length, I tie into snobs and hang in a house under the ceiling. There bulbocks dry up, ripen and pass a period of rest. Having planted these bulbochki, we next year will receive one-handed, and commodity garlic - only in the second year. However, this period may well be reduced to a year.
Neighbors in the country did not believe that I raised an excellent garlic weighing up to 50 g per year planting bulbochek. True, he did not give an arrow, but the heads were large enough. Just remember that harvest this garlic is needed later than grown from the teeth.
The secret is in the preparation of the seed. It must be impregnated with nutrient solution, tempered with changes in temperature and irradiated with sun. Here's how I prepare the solution:
On 1 l water a few grains of urea, 2-3 drops of 5-percent tincture of iodine, slightly boric acid and several crystals of potassium permanganate. The largest bulb cubes are laid out in a tray with a layer of 3-4 cm and wetted with a solution. Periodically I mix, not allowing neither overmoistening, nor drying.
Every day for two hours I expose in the sun. I make sure that the shoots do not hatch. I land in late September - early October. And I scatter small bulbs under the apple trees and berry bushes. The benefits of this are twofold: vitamin greens in early spring and phytoncides that repel pests.

It is customary to determine the readiness of garlic by ripening the bulbs on the control arrows. As soon as the inflorescences begin to burst (photo 1) - it's time to take up a shovel or pitchfork (it's more convenient for someone). But these bulbs are also an excellent planting material, which many summer residents forget about. And in the fall, it is already necessary to plant a new "batch" of winter garlic.
How many teeth do you usually plant? Well, about 30-40% of the harvested crop. How much does 1 kg of good garlic cost now? This is where the bulbs will come to the rescue. I personally always leave five or six "signal" inflorescences at plantings, and each of them contains 30-50 seeds. Good arithmetic? But planting bulbs is not only saving, but also updating the variety. After all, no matter how good it is, over time, the plants still begin to hurt, and the heads become smaller. Bubbles make it possible to get healthy garlic.
But when working with them, you need to be patient. Having planted them in the fall, next year we will get a garlic set, which is one-toothed, similar to an onion set (photo 2). The weight of such "trophies" is 5-7 g each. Having planted a set next fall, we will get real garlic, but still with small cloves. But if they are planted according to the usual "garlic" technology, then in about a year we will already have a marketable garlic that is excellent in all respects. In general, everything about everything takes three years. But, as they say, the game is worth the candle, because I get a significant savings in seed material.
In order not to interrupt this process, it is worth planting bulbs and sets every fall. I always have two lines for the first ones on the garden bed, and for the sevka - three or four. The rest of the place is occupied by planting garlic, from which I get a marketable product. This is how all three “brothers” grow together with me (photo 3).

Garlic buns ripen in two seasons. In the first year, single-tooth grows - garlic in the form of one onion, which is not divided into cloves (probably just what you designated as "small heads"). If you plant single teeth in the winter, next year full-fledged heads will grow, divided into cloves.

Winter garlic from bulbock
Most gardeners know that in order to obtain a good harvest of winter garlic, it is necessary to remove the emerging arrows in a timely manner. If they are left, then on the arrows are formed like a flower balls, consisting of many small bulbous bulbs. The plant will spend a lot of energy on their growth, the heads will grow much smaller.
However, these bulbots can serve very well. The fact is that in the soil, pathogens accumulate. They are carried along with the denticles during planting, the garlic is gradually degenerating. But air bulbs do not have contact with the soil and are usually healthy. Using them for reproduction, you can update the seed material or quickly multiply the variety you like. The site is chosen in a sunny location, where
water does not stagnate after rains or snow melts. The best predecessors: cabbage, cucumbers, legumes. Immediately after the release of the beds, the soil is dug up, cleaned of plant debris, rotted compost, superphosphate are introduced, chalk or lime into acidic soils.
Bulbochki, like denticles, are planted in the ground under the winter, at the end of September. In the prepared beds make grooves depth of about 4 cm, sow bulbs in them at a distance of 3-4 cm and fall asleep with humus. Above, you can additionally cover with peat. By next autumn bulbs will grow single-handed, which can be used as food or as a material for obtaining commodity heads. In this case, garlic can not be excavated in the autumn, but leave it to spend the winter in the garden.

When to plant winter garlic? Usually for 2-3 weeks before the onset of cold weather. In the Middle Russia, this is traditionally the last decade of September or the first decade of October. Plant deeper (10-15 cm), then it is better to carry the winter. Purple striped garlic is the best. He is wintery and unpretentious, well kept (up to 9 months). Known record results when the head of garlic pulled on 150 g. And more: buying garlic for planting, do not be greedy, take the largest and healthy bulbs.

For some reason, they rarely write about the multiplication of onions with bulbs. And I use them every year as a healthy planting material. But some part I plant and slices, I choose the largest. Then the head will grow 50-60
I do this: in the summer, when the winter garlic has arrows, I leave 5-7, but I choose the most powerful, I mark (I tie a colored rag to the arrow), I cut off the arrows in the remaining plants. When the bulb grows stronger, I open it, so the seeds grow larger.
When to remove the main garlic, I define it this way: if the arrow with the bulb is straightened, it's time to remove it.
I dig the main garlic, dry it, remove it from the tops under the awning. Well and further, as everyone do: I cut off tops, land.
And let those 5-7 garlics with bulbs even sit in the ground for 10-15 days, and it’s okay if the head cracks. I put a cap of gauze on it so that the seeds do not fall to the ground. Then I dig this garlic, bind it in a bunch and also under a canopy - to dry out.
When bulbs begin to crumble, then I select the seeds and dry them in the box. I plant late in the autumn, in October, when
yes there is a landing of the basic garlic. I land a distance of 5-7 cm from each other. In spring, they come up with the main garlic. But in the first year I do not dig them out, single-handed ones grow, but in the second year there will be full-fledged garlic.
Sometimes these seeds are planted in a garden with strawberries. A small fraction from bulbochek scatter around the bushes of currants, gooseberries, raspberries. Regular care, moderate watering, weeding, feeding. So try it, and you will succeed.
