Lilies belong to the onion plants of the family Liliaceae. Their bulbs consist of individual succulent scales, more or less densely adjacent to each other. From the bottom part of the bulb roots go, sometimes the supra-roots roots are formed. The leaves of the lilies grow on stems. Daylilies - rhizome perennials with cord-like subordinate roots. Their leaves are longer than the lilies. They grow from the roots, so the bush resembles a fountain. Almost the naked peduncles tower above the leaves. In this case, each flower of the daylily blooms only one day.
Planting bulbs of lilies is best at the end of vegetation, in northern regions of Russia - in August or early September. They should be dense, without rotten scales and traces of mold, with living roots of at least 5 cm. Sometimes in the autumn bulbs are sold with sprouts, but such a planting material should not be bought. But the bulb of lilies, coming on sale from February to March (by the way, at this time the biggest choice), just and should be with sprouts (preferably small).
If you bought lilies in the spring, store them before planting in the open ground (late April - May) in perforated plastic bags with dry peat in the bottom compartment of the refrigerator. If the sprouts of the lilies are long, you can immediately plant the bulbs in pots and keep them in the room on a light sill. Lilies planted in March will blossom in June. After flowering, they are kept in a room or on a balcony (the ovaries are cut off, the leaves are preserved), and in the autumn they are transplanted into the garden.

Growing lilies is easiest to start with Asian hybrids - they are the most unpretentious.
If you are interested in daylilies, then know that the best time to plant them is May. However, the planting material is often sold in August. At this time, you can also land, given that it takes about a month to take root. The diaper of the daylily should consist of 1-3 sockets, leaves and a good lobe of roots.

    What distinguishes daylilies from lilies?
    Similar only to the name
I'm a beginner's summer dacha, and I really want to breed a lot of flowers first. It is clear that there are a lot of questions, but I will begin with this: tell me, please, what distinguishes lilies and daylilies. If possible - briefly!

They look like a name and a few flowers. A differ significantly.
Lilies carry flowers on a leafy stalk (this type of leaf arrangement people call "-elochka"), one or several of them. The daylily first lets out a bundle of belt-like leaves, and then long, naked flower stalks.
Lily winters at the expense of a scaly bulb, the daylily - with the help of a root crop. resembling those of dahlias. Neither the others nor digging for the winter is not necessary.
Daylilies are easier to care for than lilies, and start standing with them. Those and other varieties are hundreds! And the features of culture you can easily find in the specialized literature.
