How to care for orchids with middevals and draculas
These orchids are struck by the coloring of flowers, the gracefulness of the shape of the petals, some crystal fragility in appearance and simply the hypnotic fascination of their botanical names.
Dracula gorgona (Dracula diabola), there are even hybrids, named in the same gloomy spirit of Dracula Transilvania, Dracula Black Magic, Dracuvallia Vampire Stripes (Masdevallia x Dracula).
The sinister, frightening image seen by the flower growers in an almost black flower with long red tips of petals, as if bleeding, made these orchids for many exotic lovers even more attractive.
The fact is that this kind of orchid was named after the legendary vampire Dracula. Moreover, it seems that all names of vampires and monsters are simply specially collected in the specific epithets of representatives of this genus:
- Dracula vampira
- Dracula nosferatu
- Dracula vladtepes
- Dracula polyphemus
- Dracula chimaera
Among the draculas, the most beautiful and largest flowers are in large species with wide leaves.
It is a
- Dracula vampire,
- Dracula chimaera,
- Dracula wolwadae,
- Dracula vlad-tepesh,
- Dracula bella, but they are the most whimsical.
More hardy are small species with narrow leaves:
- Dracula hirsute,
- Draculasimia,
- Dracula simbuinensis,
- Dracula lotax,
- Dracula incognita.
- Dracula psittacina.
Features of caring for dracula and masdevali orchids
Masdevalii and dracules are grown under the same conditions. They are planted in small baskets, in pure New Zealand sphagnum or in a mixture of sphagnum, shallow bark, natural pumice or pieces of foam. Such a substrate should be changed annually. Sprinkle exotic sissies only from above, soft and clean, thawed, rain or distilled water.
It is necessary to carefully monitor that the substrate is always wet.
For successful development and flowering, draculae and massades require a lot of light in combination with coolness, increased atmospheric humidity (not less than 65%) and active air circulation.

Therefore, it is very difficult to grow them in a dwelling. These orchids work well, for example, in amateurs in Britain, Sweden, where the natural climate is more favorable for these plants. But our collectors also have a chance, although the first attempts may be unsuccessful.
It is necessary to choose the right species for the collection, start with the most hardy of them, acquire only bushy specimens with a large number of sprouts and live roots, and most importantly - learn how to protect plants from heat in the summer.
Peruvian orchids
Dracula grow in the mountain forests of Ecuador and Colombia, among clouds of fog and rain. The genus Dracula was isolated by botanists from the extensive family Masdevallia. Outwardly masdevali are very similar to dracules, but their flowers are painted in brighter colors.
Masdevalia is Peruvians' favorite orchid. We can say that this is a symbol of Peru. The image of this orchid is present in fairy tales, songs and legends of the ancient Incas. In the flower of Masdevalia, the Peruvians see an eye that is crying, only according to legend it is tears of happiness, and not grief. These wonderful flowers bear the poetic name "eyes of the forest."
The most spectacular types of oils are
- Masdevallia tovarensis
- Masdevallia veichiana
- Masdevallia coccinea
- Masdevallia principes
- Masdevallia regina
- Masdevallia deformis
Fortunately, observations have shown that they are hardy enough. In addition, the culture has a large selection of very beautiful hybrids, such as Masdevallia Prince Charming, Masdevallia Aquarius, Masdevallia Bella Donna, Masdevallia Angel Frost, Masdevallia Angel Candy, Masdevallia Cuper Angel.
The most unusual Masdevallia include Masdevallia caesia (Masdevalia caesia) and Masdevallia caudate (Masdevalia caaudate).
Masdevallia caudata has rather long petal tips, and Masdevallia caesia leaves are blue-green with a glowing glow, and this orchid grows "upside down." Such leaves of botany are called "rainbow".
