Gooseberries and its most delicious, easy-to-care varieties, incl. resistant to powdery mildew
Find wild gooseberry can be anywhere in Europe, but only the British with a special inspiration to eradicate varieties with large fruits. For 200 years, British gardeners have created about 300 different varieties!
Even in the last century gooseberries and in our country belonged to the most popular berry bushes, and along with European cultivated also North American species.
On the subject: Cultivation and care for gooseberry and currant: American experience
But along with them was brought and the American powdery mildew, which easily amazed gooseberries.
The mushroom covered the berries with a white coating, and they became inedible. The tops of the shoots perished, and the weakened bush was unable to bear the winter. Not surprisingly, the popularity of gooseberries has fallen sharply.
However, the powerlessness in the fight against powdery mildew did not last long; finally, new resistant varieties appeared on the market, but only a few of them (for example, 'Invicta') not inferior to the old varieties to taste. Fortunately, resistant to powdery mildew managed to be derived from the old varieties.
Among them is the variety known since the XNUMXth century.Weisse Triumphbeere»With delicate, slightly pubescent skin and spicy sourness, reminiscent of the taste of champagne.
As well as the Black Velvet variety, which has an excellent gamut of aromas, it is an almost forgotten very powdery mildew hybrid of gooseberries (Grossularia divaricatum) and North American wild gooseberries (Grossularia hirtellum). But their berries are smaller, and sprawling bushes require more space in the garden.
It’s easier to care for and harvest from the bushes of some new varieties, such as Lady Late or Pax. Having seen in the catalog the concept of "non-studded variety", do not be fooled: gooseberries always have thorns!
They are firmly connected with the bark and are of leaf origin, so unlike spines on blackberries or roses, it is impossible to get rid of them.
Long summer heat all gooseberry varieties are poorly tolerated, until the appearance of sunburn and brown spots on the fruit.
Previously, shrubs tried to plant under tall fruit trees. With a small area of a branch of gooseberries can pritenyat cover textile. At the end of the summer, it is necessary to conduct thinning of the bush.
The cultivation of bushes with five main branches justifies itself on the plot. Those who have few places can stretch bushes like raspberries on trellis. In a tub it looks good chopped gooseberry, but, as a rule, he needs support to the middle of the crown.

The best varieties of gooseberries "two capitals" - description
In 90-ies of the last century, there was a need to deduce low-horned green fruit varieties of gooseberries, combining high productivity and good taste qualities of berries. With resistance to unfavorable external conditions, fungal diseases and the ability to vegetatively propagate.
A parallel work on hybridization in this direction began in Moscow, at the MCAA Fruit Experimental Station (now the fruit growing laboratory of the RASA-MAHA named after KA Timiryazev), and in Pavlovsk, at the Leningrad fruit and vegetable experimental station (Leningrad Region).
The result of the selection work in Pavlovsk, initiated by OA. Medvedev and continued I.S. Student and N.M. Alekseeva, there were excellent hybrid varieties Cascade, Golden Grapes, Green Ball, Worker, Pushkin, Salute, Baltic, Leningrad, Serafim.
Of the varieties of the next generation, four entered the State Register of Selection Achievements: Krasnoslavyansky, Salute, White Nights and Eridan. Elite forms have been selected that combine large fruiting, reliable productivity, resistance to fungal diseases and very good taste in their genotype, they are suitable both for the harsh conditions of the third climatic zone with low winter temperatures, frequent recurrent frosts, and for the central strip of Russia. However, unfortunately, they are not well known and are not widely distributed.
I'll tell you about some of them.
Krasnoslavyanskiy (Avenarius x Oregon) - one of the most delicious modern varieties, ripens in the medium term. The bush is medium-sized, slightly spreading, with straight prickly shoots, thorns are located along the entire length. The variety is a donor of high self-fertility (up to 49%) and high potential yield (an average of 6-7 kg per bush). The brush is single and two-flowered, berries (4-6 g) are rounded and round-oval, very beautiful, evenly colored, dark cherry with a purple hue, with a thick velvety and rare bristly pubescence over the entire surface. The peel is medium density, the flesh is juicy, tender, dessert taste. The venation is almost indistinguishable, the skin is thin, delicate, but durable. The variety borrowed aroma and magnificent gentle taste from Avenarius. Red-Slavic is a winter-hardy and quite resistant to fungal diseases variety, however, in some years there is a danger of freezing and damage by powdery mildew.
Variety Salute (Mysovskiy 17 х Industry) - medium early maturity. The bush is low, compact, with high shoot-forming ability, but when loaded with a crop it becomes spreading. Arched curved branches strewn with berries are very picturesque. Spikes average amount. The variety begins to bear fruit early, is characterized by high self-fertility (up to 40%) and productivity (up to 7 kg from the bush).
Brushes one- and two-flowered. Berries (from 2,4 to 6,5 g) on long peduncles, round-oval or pear-shaped, cherry red, with almost indistinguishable venation, at the base of the berry there is a small influx. The fruits are delicious, but without flavor.
Skin of medium thickness, strong, with overripe berries for a long time remain on the bush, without losing its qualities. The variety is resistant to fungal diseases, but not very hardy: in severe winters, the tips of the shoots freeze. It breeds badly.
Seraphim (Cascade x Captivator) - medium-term variety, self-fertile and fruitful (4-7,1 kg per bush). The bush is medium-sized, slightly spreading, with practically spineless shoots. The brush is single and two-flowered. The berries are medium and large (4-6 g), on long stalks, slightly elongated, oval, bright red, with light venation and pubescence, with a thin but strong skin and juicy pulp of a pleasant taste. The variety is winter-hardy and highly resistant to fungal diseases.
Yield (up to 10 kg per bush) variety Baltic {Mysovskiy 17 х Industry) ripens in the medium term. The bush is low, compact, spherical. Shoots spiny, spines located along the entire length of the shoot. Berries are medium (2,9-4,1, up to 5 g), round or oval in shape, light green, with dense skin and waxy coating. The taste is sweet and sour, pleasant, refreshing. The variety is fairly winter-hardy, but in the frosty winters, annual growths freeze, may be affected by powdery mildew and anthracnose.
Leningrad (Mysovskiy 17 х Industry) belongs to the group of late varieties. The bush is quite high, semi-spreading, shoots are slightly prickly. He is a complex donor of high productivity (7,6 kg from the bush, up to 11 kg), large-fruited (berries 6,1-10 g) and good taste. The fruits are thick-skinned, obovate, dark red with a purple tint and a rare bristly pubescence. The taste is dessert, with a characteristic “fox” flavor (this is the term for winemakers, that is, isabel aroma and after-taste of grapes from Isabella, Lydia, etc., ed.). Winter hardiness is high, but the variety is susceptible to powdery mildew.
Particularly I would like to mention gooseberry Pushkin (Green bottle x Pavlovsky green) - One of my favorite gooseberries. It is not included in the State Register, but differs in its excellent properties: low bushes with practically springless shoots quickly pass to fruiting. Quite large (4-4,5 g) berries ripen early, they are beautiful oval in shape, transparent, greenish-yellow, smooth, with thin skin and a slight waxy coating. The pulp is juicy, tasty, aromatic. This variety is a donor of high potential productivity (yield 7-9 kg per bush). It reproduces well, highly winter-resistant, relatively resistant to late spring frosts, powdery mildew and anthracnose. It is quite unpretentious, grows well on clay, loamy, sandy and sandy soils, but does not tolerate acidic, marshy and cold, loves the sun, is responsive to good care and mineral nutrition.
It was from Pushkin that the promising cultivar Summer Morning (49-25-97) (Pushkin x Golden Flame), produced in the fruit growing laboratory of the RGAU-MAAA named after KA. Timiryazev (Moscow).
The results of the breeding work of Moscow scientists in this field have yielded significant results. D During the 10 years of research, a large number of hybrids were obtained. Among them were selected varieties Aladdiyy, Summer morning, Summer, Carnelian (authors Aladin ON, Akimova SV, Nikitochkin DN), which are currently being tested by the state.
Get to know them. Aladdia (No. 12-46) (selected among the population of the Plum variety) is a late high-yielding variety (up to 10 kg from a bush). The bush is medium-sized, semi-spreading, dense, spherical in shape. Spiky shoots, spikes in the lower and middle parts of the shoot. Inflorescences are single and two-flowered. The berries are large (5-7 g), round-oval in shape, green, with bright light venation and a slight waxy coating. The skin is of medium thickness, the flesh is juicy, tender, sweet and sour, with a light aroma, a small amount of seeds. The variety is interesting for its high winter hardiness, resistance to powdery mildew and anthracnose, and high productivity. Weakly affected by septoria. Well propagated by layering and green cuttings.
Country (No. 17-64-98) (Sadko x Shalun) - early ripening. Productivity on average 4-6 kg per bush. The bush is medium-sized, slightly spreading, ob-ovoid in shape, of medium density. Shoots are straight, slightly prickly (single spikes only in the lower part of the shoot). Inflorescences are one-two-flowered. Exceptionally fragrant berries are large (5,5-6,2 g), round-oval, green, with a light venation, a slight waxy coating, a thin but strong skin, and small seeds. The taste is sweet and sour, refreshing, delicate. The variety is highly winter-resistant, resistant to powdery mildew, anthracnose and septoria. It reproduces well in all vegetative ways.
Carnelian (No. 12-56-97) (seedlings of variety Black Negus from free pollination). A variety of medium late maturity.
Yield to 6 kg per bush. The bush is very tall, erect, obra-ovate, medium-dense. Sprouts straight, prickly, spines single, not large at the bottom of the shoot. At the base of some young shoots there may be small, frequent spines in internodes.
Inflorescences one-two-flowered. The berries are large (5-5,5 g), oval-ovate, dark red, with light venation, a weak waxy coating and a rare glandular pubescence. Peel medium density, stems long, seeds a small amount. Aromatic flesh is juicy, tender, pleasant sour taste. The variety has a high winter hardiness, is drought-resistant and fried, is immune to powdery mildew and septoria, and is slightly affected by anthracnose. It reproduces well with layers and green cuttings.
Summer morning (49-25-97) (Pushkin x Golden Light). Early, yielding (up to 7 kg from the bush) variety. The bush is medium-sized, slaboskidisty, rounded. Shoots are straight, slightly shy, spines are single, short, sparse at the bottom of the shoot. The variety is fast-growing, the main fruiting on an annual growth and two-three-year fruit trees. Inflorescences one-two-flowered. The berries are large (5,5 g, up to 8 g), round-oval in shape, with light venation, slight pubescence and a weak waxy coating. Green fruits acquire a honeydew during maturation. The skin is thin, but strong, the seeds are average. The berries are fragrant with a very good delicate taste. The variety successfully tolerates severe winters, it is resistant to powdery mildew, anthracnose and septoriosis. It reproduces well with layers and green cuttings.

Useful properties of gooseberries and several recipes with it
The gooseberry harvest season is very long, because it all depends on which gooseberry you prefer - sweet or sour, hard or soft. But even if you like pronounced sourness in the berries, do not pick them too soon! Semi-ripened fruits are also suitable for compote, juice or jam, while only large berries colored in accordance with the variety have a strong aroma, which, when pressed, slightly spring. When buying, it is also better not to take hard berries. Completely ripened fruits are very soft and contain almost as much sugar as grapes.
Harvest is stored in the refrigerator without loss of quality for only a few days. Berries can be frozen - in this case they will retain their shape, however, they will practically lose their taste.
Red berries sometimes turn brown when heated, but this does not affect either taste or health benefits. Great content in gooseberry vitamin C promotes the strengthening of the immune system of our body, apple and citric acids stimulate digestion of minerals, especially silicon, strengthen the skin, blood vessels and joints.

Gooseberries in our family enjoys constant popularity, especially we love red-berry.
The largest red berries are in the late-ripe Datenik variety. Its fruits can reach with good care of 15 g. Dates of bush should be watered, especially if there is no rainfall. In arid regions, seedlings may not take root. It is also important to prevent diseases, since Phenicia often suffers from them.
But Kolobok not bad against powdery mildew and anthracnose. His berries are also quite large. They are bright red, fragrant, kilo-sweet. Rush earlier than Finik.
I like the brand Krasloslavian. The fruit is not very large, but delicious. The first berries we tore from his bushes already in 2 year after planting. Now the harvest is increasing every year. True, they say that after 8, it will begin to decline. So in the spring I bent 3 branches, sprinkled with soil. By the end of the summer, when they take root, cut them off with a pruner and transplant them with a clod of earth.
So after the peak of the yields of the old Krasnovyansky bushes, we will be replaced by new, growing plants.

I am a gardener with experience and love to grow interesting new plants. I acquired two yoshta seedlings in the nursery - as they explained to me, this is a mixture of gooseberries and black currants. Yes, indeed, the leaves are like gooseberries, and the berries are black and grow with a brush, like currants. But…
Firstly, I waited three years for the berries to appear. The bushes grew enormous, more than one and a half meters in height and width. There were very few berries - a couple of glasses from two bushes, and the area occupied more than 2 currant bushes, from which I collect a bucket of delicious, large berries. Yoshta’s berries are sour, small, slightly resembling the taste of black currant. I immediately uprooted these bushes with great difficulty, and left the berries to the birds.
Maybe the scientists have not yet produced yoshtu with good taste, but I was disappointed, and would not advise planting this shrub without first trying the berries.

I read here about yoshta - many people criticize it (taste of yoshta), and I think that these fruits have a good taste. The bushes give an excellent harvest (several buckets from each), without requiring any special care. I have never seen birds on them! Maybe, of course, because the berries ripen early.
I harvest the harvest and close it, like currants, with sugar: for 1 kg of berries I put 1 kg of sand. It turns out very tasty! She grinded everything, covered with a kapron lid, put it in the fridge, and costs a whole yoshtas all winter as fresh.
And finally I want to add a few words about the unpretentiousness of yoshty.
We grew two trees, which are well fruited. But one day all their leaves were swallowed with green caterpillars. I almost fainted from the sight of the mutilated branches. What should I do? Both trees were immediately removed and put a couple of layers of them closer to the sun. And they very quickly went into growth and early began to bear fruit. I did not have time to blink, as they say, as they already became taller than me.
