How to make your own hands a dry stream to decorate your dacha
Dry stream is an original landscape element. You can do it with minimal effort and money, and the benefits are huge. It is safe for small children and does not serve as a refuge for mosquitoes. Even a small stream will visually increase the area.
Dry creek, unlike the present, does not require the cost of maintenance, changes in terrain, complex excavation. The main rule is to create the most natural picture. When choosing a place in the garden, consider that your future creek will not be able to flow through the hills, so that the device of the dry stream should be such that it bends around them, which will create only one additional highlight in the design of the garden and dacha.
To create a special lowland effect, you can make a small gorge.
So-called "dry" streams suit first of all from stones, large and small pebble, sand.
You can use only one material, but you can all at once. The creation of such anhydrous streams should be taken seriously: the impression of their consideration is very strong, therefore the form, texture and color are important. Experienced landscape masters advise, before starting work, to observe how real streams flow - and make a stream without water similar to natural.
Sandy streams
The dry stream itself is not a traditional element of the Japanese garden - it is only a symbol of water, meaning continuous movement. If for some reason it was impossible to let the water flow, then in return they made a groove where the stream was about to gurgle. The most popular streams in our country are made of stones and pebbles. In the homeland of such an unusual landscape element, sandy compositions are also widespread. Two or three sand jets of no more than 20 cm wide are enough: they can be given any shape — connect them along the course of the “current”, or, on the contrary, separate them from each other.
The sandy trickle from above is gently combed with garden light rakes to create the effect of a kind of artificial waves: run along the surface, without touching the lower layers, so as not to turn out the soil located under the sand
Sandy brooks can be decorated with pebbles or include stones that depict islets.
The source of the dry brook
Like any stream, the stream has a mouth and a source.
The source can be on a small elevation, and for its designation it is good to lay out a well of round form from the stone: so will the illusion of the flow of water from the well. The source can also come out of the rock: build a mound of large boulder stones near the fence, or lay a low hill on an open platform. Around the source plant moisture-loving plants: daylilies, a bathing-place, marsh irises, caluzhnitsa. So the illusion will be complete.
Imitation of the fusion of sleeves
The mouth imitates the flow of a dry stream into another "pond". His device is designed so that it goes for some kind of natural barrier, for example a fence or hidden behind plants among which there may be hosts, geychers, badana and more
The device of a dry stream can consist of either one winding channel or it can have several branches. To select the shape of the channel, stretch the ropes along the proposed route: see which option is more successful. The width of the stream in the course of its dry current can be slightly changed and varied - expand or narrow at a certain stage. An interesting variant of the stream is in the form of a steep one-sided ravine.

Drywall construction
Having determined the direction and bends of the stream, marking the contours, it is necessary to make a recess. The main thing is the correspondence of the upper layer of stones to the water level.
Too concave creek looks unnatural, and the stones imposed above the ground are more like the usual garden path. For the device of a dry stream it will be better to choose the shallow water effect: visually drown a rocky bottom. Taking out the soil to a depth of 20-30 cm, lay the path of the stream with geotextile: it will pass water, will not allow the stones to go deeper into the earth, protect the riverbed from erosion and weeds. Next, you can pour a layer of sand on the canvas and put stones on top of it, or you can immediately start laying stones.
You can give a man-made stream a more decorative look and enhance the perception effect due to additional elements. It is good to throw a wooden bridge, plant plants or even arrange a sandbank in the widest place. When choosing plants, it is important that they are not too tall and do not overlap the leaves of the stream. Finally - another wish: do not go along the bed of your dry stream, especially if there is a bridge over it. Treat this element of the landscape as a work of art - contemplate and fill with positive energy.
Plants for a dry stream
- Ayr ordinary (Acorus calamus) Leaves are narrow-leaved, x-ray, bright green. Propagates by rhizomes.
- Geiger Heuchera. Grassy perennial. Leaves are basal, long-petiolate.
- Hosta (Perennial herb with decorative leaves. (More on cultivation, grades and care for ghekhers)
- Iris Siberian (Iris sibirica) A herbaceous perennial plant with narrow leaves.
The shape and color of stones for the stream channel
In addition to the main types of stones, gravel, limestone and marble can also be used. Gravel will provide the channel a dark color with shades of red or green.
When using marble, the bottom turns dirty white, and basalt, gneiss and slate will give light gray shades. Two or three breeds are enough for the device of the stream, otherwise it will lose its natural appearance. Shore the banks with large and smaller stones, put on the bottom of mulberry or other small stones. You can paint light stones, and smooth gray kruglyashi processed with a special composition to give them a shiny "wet" appearance. But the natural kind of stones is no less attractive.

- Determining the location, size and direction of the channel, dig a trench. Trumbing the bottom, you can put a non-woven material on top (geotextile).
- We begin to lay out the bed (Stones - large and medium. You can use the stone that decorated the house or plot, or you can specially select other stones in color and texture.
- On the sides (banks) we place larger boulders, the intervals of the bed between the stones are covered with pebbles. The "bottom" should not rise above the "shore".
- We will shape the brook with plants that are associated with water bodies. Tall, large-leaved trees should be avoided: alternate low-growth species with
Our advice
If you want to make a sandy creek with your own hands, use a garden watering can. The sifted sand poured out of it will lie flat. First, draw a line on the ground where the trickle will pass: subsequently the direction of the sand will be difficult to change, the sand mass, especially scattered with a thick layer, is very poorly removed from the soil surface.
Successful to you of construction, peace and good.
DRY RIVER OWN HANDS - PHOTOS AND TIPS OF CUSTOMERS
I want to tell how we got a dry stream, which became a bright decoration of the garden.
Once upon a time we had concreted a small oblong area under the pool, which for practicality the husband sprinkled sand and gravel on the edges. But we, unfortunately, have not completed it. And a couple of years the sad picture in this place was not pleasing to the eye. When the pond was made, large stones remained, and the idea came to me - to add them to the pool enclosure.
But still, something was missing that was alive, which could really cause aesthetic pleasure. Then in some places I dug holes to the sand and poured nutrient soil into them. Planted here unpretentious garden plants: fescue, oregano, thyme, several types of mint and stonecrops. I especially like Sedumas because they bloom beautifully and the bushes are compact.
To make the composition look richer, put pots with petunias on flat pebbles. They bloomed elegantly and ennobled the stream. And in the second year, many seedlings of our "pool" have grown well, delighting the hosts and guests with flowering and fragrance! All summer we drank tea with aromatic herbs, and in the fall I dried thyme, oregano and mint for the winter. So we got a cozy corner for relaxing in the mornings and evenings.
Composition Care
To maintain such beauty does not need a lot of effort and attention.
But it’s important:
- pick up a “menu” for plants. When planting in each hole, rained 1 tsp dry vermicompost. Twice a season I was watered with a liquid analog of the same fertilizer;
- moisten the soil as needed. On hot days, I always watered herbs and flowers in the morning and evening;
- remove faded buds and inflorescences, as well as yellowed or drying leaves in time - in order to avoid the appearance of various diseases. This is how an unpretentious dry stream formed in our garden. Next year, instead of petunias, I want to plant a fragrant lobelia, which will perfectly complement the composition and will delight flowering all summer.

DIY bridge over a dry stream
Using materials at hand and not attracting professional designers, I created on my site a small rock garden, a dry pond and a bridge with lace railings. Look what a piece of paradise turned out!
My neighbor helped me to make the bridge: he welded a solid frame from iron corners, fixed planks and one-sided railings with ornate patterns on it. The base of the bridge was painted black and the lace railings were painted white.
There is not much room in the yard to dig a deep ditch and make a nice pond. And then you have to mess around with regular cleaning. Therefore, we decided to arrange a dry reservoir. They dug a metal pallet into the ground and filled it with large stones.
I picked up a few boulders for the rock garden, planted hosts, junipers, stonecrops and subulate phlox around. A wonderful place to stay is ready!

Tell me, please, how best to equip a dry stream?

This landscape solution is especially good for small areas where there is no way to build a real pond. Simulation of the stream will allow to make an additional accent and thus avoid the monotony in the design of the territory.
First of all, you need to decide on the location of such a stream. Better to make it twisty. For example, the "source" can begin in the berry bushes, and the "mouth" can be lost in the hedge. To start, we mow all the vegetation in the area of the future stream. The contour is marked with a rope, and if the channel is winding, they do not pull it, but simply lay it on the ground. Naturally, in this case, it should be thick enough to be clearly visible.
After such preparatory work, it is necessary to remove the sod (if any) and the soil layer to a depth of 20-30 cm. If the land is fertile, it can be used to pile on flowerbeds and beds. The bottom of the future brook is covered with strong polyethylene film or, better yet, geotextile. This will protect against germination of weeds.
After that, we pour almost pebbles with the surface of the earth pebbles of different fractions, pre-mixing it with large river sand. problems to purchase pellets made of recycled glass. If you scatter them on the surface of a dry stream, an illusion of the sparkling surface of the water will be created.
Shores are best laid out from different, but large enough rubble stones. And in their intervals it is recommended to plant ground cover plants and decorative mosses.
The fact that this is not a meandering path, but a stream, will emphasize the bridge that can connect the banks. Of course, the best is to look wooden, as if from a fairy tale, a design in the form of a steep arc of logs sawn along. Near the creek you can put a bench made in the same style. It will be a pleasure to relax after a hard summer work.

In the garden there is a dry stream, it crosses the path that leads to the house. I want to make a bridge over the "stream" in this place. Tell me, please, how?

- Try to make a wooden bridge. First you need to put lags. It is advisable to purchase special material for this. The logs should not be straight, but arc-shaped. Then you need to lay on them flooring from edging boards with a minimum thickness of 3 cm, pretreated with a special composition against decay. Install the balusters and make the railing.
Of course, you can build a bridge on straight logs, having previously made an uncomplicated foundation for support. The elements of the flooring are laid with slots, then water will not be retained on it. To ensure that the surface is guaranteed to be non-slip, cover it from above with a metal mesh.
You can also buy ready-made bridges. Now there are many companies that offer similar products made of wood and metal.
