Summer - the time of fresh berries, and raspberries and blackberries - one of the most loved. It is easy to take care of these semi-shrubs, besides they do not take up much space. In addition to the taste qualities of berries in choosing a variety, one should first of all consider the resistance of plants to frequently occurring diseases, such as purple spot of raspberry and gray mold on berries.
Raspberry at the time of harvesting is divided into two groups: summer and autumn.
The main time of summer collection is in June - July. If you plant on the site and summer and autumn raspberries, then from the end of June to almost the coldest on your table will always be fresh and fragrant berries. The summer raspberry flowers and, accordingly, the fruits are formed on the shoots of last year. Growing such a raspberry is somewhat more difficult than an autumn raspberry (see tips on the next page).
Autumn raspberries form flowers and berries on annual shoots that appeared in the spring. After fruiting, late autumn or early winter, they are completely cut out. Recently, a new type of these half-shrubs appeared on sale: the patch raspberry, which fructifies twice per season. In the first year from August to October, annual shoots bear fruit. The next summer the berries are tied up also on biennial branches. But this is possible only if you follow all the rules of pruning: in late autumn you need to cut out every second shoot, and remove the thickest and oldest ones. The remaining stalks need to cut off the tips just below the fruit brushes, from which they have already harvested, then in the summer they will again have berries. After the second harvest, the branches must be cut to the ground. Tip: use the same technique for pruning and for autumn raspberries.
As for growing blackberries, then here you will have to work a little. Fortunately on the market there are new direct-growing varieties of blackberries, which have almost no spines, which means that it is possible to separate young and fruit-bearing branches and spend the pinch of side shoots necessary in the middle of the summer even without gloves. Although the blackberry is more frost-resistant than raspberries, it should choose places protected from the cold wind and well warmed by the sun.

Growing early and late blackberry varieties such as Navaho and Loch Tay, you can enjoy the harvest all summer long. Even with two bushes you can collect enough berries for canning or freezing!
The new variety Navaho Bigandearly yields in the beginning of July, while the stems of plants of this variety grow vertically and do not collapse. Very attractive, is not it?
Such bushes can, if necessary, tie to a support height of about 2 m, then harvest will be even more convenient.
Blackberries are more resistant to drought than raspberries, however, you need to make sure that the soil under the bushes does not dry out.
During the ripening of berries, the bush needs additional moisture. To water after watering does not evaporate as long as possible, the soil should be covered with a thick layer of mulch from crushed plants.
In August, it's time to eat delicious and nutritious dishes based on berries.

- In raspberry, purple-stemmed stems and calyx flowers are covered with inoffensive needles. It fructifies early in the autumn.
- The best time for planting raspberries is autumn, while the soil is still warm and dry. If there is a threat of early frosts, landing should be moved to the spring. Choose seedlings with well-developed, powerful roots. Raspberry grows best on light sandy and loamy soils with permeable subsoils. Every year, the bush should be fed with organic fertilizers.
- Pruning of summer raspberries is carried out in the middle of summer, preferably immediately after harvesting. Cut out all biennial branches (they are darker) as close as possible to the ground. From annual light green strong shoots, leave 8-10 stems for one running meter. Tie them up. All weak young shoots cut at the very base.

In late July - early August, when the sweet raspberry and blackberry berries ripen on the bushes, it is difficult to resist the temptation to cook from them something delicious for their beloved family. And do not limit your imagination, because raspberries and blackberries are good in any dish - choose a recipe for your taste! Perfectly refreshing, for example, light smoothies. It is best to make such a drink from fresh berries and feast on it, sitting in a shady corner. Raspberry is rich in vitamin C, antioxidants that protect our body from the action of free radicals. Berry perfectly complements tiramisu, gazpacho or light summer salad. Take note: from 1 kg of berries you can cook about 500 ml of mashed potatoes.
In order not to damage the berries, lightly rinse them with a thin stream of water. Be careful, otherwise, along with an appetizing appearance, the berries will lose their wonderful aroma. Important: after the harvest raspberries do not ripen, and her berries become softer. Remember that in fresh, unprocessed form, berries can be stored in the refrigerator for no more than three days. The blackberry is considered a solid berry. Its almost black fruits can be stored in the refrigerator for three to five days. They can be used to make jam, like stuffing for a pie or for spicy dishes of chicken fillet with pine nuts. In the freezer the berries retain their properties up to 12 months.
Gazpacho with raspberries and nectarines

150 g raspberries, 2 nectarine, 1 slice bread for toast, 1 clove garlic, 500 r ripe tomatoes, 1 cucumber, 2 red sweet peppers, 2 green onion, approx. 10 ice cubes, 1-2 table, spoons of sherry vinegar, 1-2 table, spoons of olive oil, salt, ground cayenne pepper, mint leaves for decoration
1. Raspberry to sort out. Nectarines are washed and, after removing bones, cut into slices. For a handful of berries and fruits, put aside for decoration. 2. From the bread cut the crust, soak in a small amount of water. 3. Garlic clean and chop. 4. Tomatoes to beat with boiling water and peel. Seeds removed, pulp cut into cubes. Remove the sweet pepper from the seeds and chop finely together with cucumber and green onions. 5. Bread to squeeze, together with vegetables, half ice cubes, raspberries and necta-t rines put in a bowl blender and chop. Pour approx. 250 ml of cold water. 6. Fill the mixture with vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper. Place in the refrigerator for 1 h. 7. Spread the gazpacho on the bowls, add ice, raspberries and nectarines, decorate with mint.
Blackberry Pie

For the cake: 300 g flour, 100 g sugar, a pinch of salt, 1 egg, 200 g butter, dry peas for baking. For the filling: 1 sachet of vanilla sugar, 150 g sugar, 700 ml milk, 100 g of semolina, 2 eggs, pinch of salt, 350 g blackberry, 1 red jelly bag for cake, 250 ml redcurrant juice

Go crazy, what a beauty ...
I have been growing large-billed blackberry berry for 8 years. Started with one bush, or rather, with twigs. And gave it to me one employee at work. When given, nothing really could not tell how to take care of her. I thought that you need to plant it in the penumbra, but it did not go. Decided to do the opposite. I found the most sunny place, dug a half-meter depth of the ditch, poured grassy waste there, manure rotted, threw a little soil and landed my unhappy plant.
It was in the spring. By July, new shoots appeared and it became clear that I did everything right. I dug a bush, mulched it with mowed grass, and watered abundantly once a week. By autumn, shoots had grown to three meters and were as thick as a thumb. And the next year I collected half a bucket of large berries from this bush. Now I have 6 varieties of large-fruited blackberries. The most fruitful of them are black Satin, Thornfrey and the Triple Crown.
To have a good harvest, blackberries do not need to be cut off in the summer!
I lower the young shoots to the ground - in autumn it is easier to cover, because the blackberry is afraid of severe frosts. As soon as it gets colder to 0 °, I bind the lashes and cover them with sheets of wavy slate. In the spring I put 2-meter stakes at a distance of half a meter from each other, then I cross-tie the poles in 4 rows across the wire and attach the stems of the blackberry to them to the full height.
When it blooms - you can go crazy with beauty ... Pink flowers adorn the bush until autumn, and then the berries go. The blackberry is very fruitful and caring for it is not complicated. Make irrigation grooves around the bush, mulch with humus and mowed grass, and you will be with this beautiful berry from mid-summer to next spring. In summer you will eat fresh, and in winter frozen, in jams and compotes.
