How to make the most simple Alpine hill on the site, in the garden
Is your site absolutely flat and a bit boring?
Build an alpine hill of stones and rubble, plant low-growth and ground cover plants on it. The landscape will become much more interesting and natural.
The alpine hill, as it seems to us today, was born in England, in a cool and humid area. She came to the Mediterranean countries later, and, since the climate there is completely different, this also affected the selection of plants. In cool areas, plants growing on the rocks, and undersized "Alpines" are usually planted. The latter often have fleecy and fleshy leaves, better retaining moisture, prefer well-drained poor soils and sunny places. In a warm climate for gardening "slides" use lavender, gorse, small succulents; in hot - cacti.
Nuances of choosing plants for rock garden
The choice of plants depends on the situation. For sunny places well suited; bell of the Portenschlag. Myrtolithic euphorbia and Veronica spica. For stony soil - alpine gutchinzia, bourzer poppy and horned violet. For shady and moist areas, primrose and forget-me-not.
In the crevices between the stones laid on the ground, geranium, mint and thyme grow well; while the lumens in the walls can be filled with Erinus alpine or different types of gazelle. At the dacha, where you can not often come, we advise you to plant saxifrage and immortelle alternating with cleaning.
Small parts
If you are planning to set up a rocky garden in a large area, you should work with small stones, moss and pebbles. However, moss requires a cool and very humid climate; if your conditions are different, use only pebbles, planting a group of flowering plants between the loose stones. At the same time, keep in mind that the classic “alpine hill” is usually embossed and must have a bias.

Under the sun
The Alpine hill has taken root everywhere, especially in hot countries. The illusion of a southern rocky garden can be created in cooler regions. If the climate allows, you can plant more heat-loving and even exotic plants. The rampant garden crops will create an unusual contrast between domestic and exotic pets.
In the "crevices" between the plates of the garden path and on the slopes of the hill immortals and stonecrops perfectly take root. Limestone looks very southern. An unusual garden can turn out if you use it not only for the design of the slide, but also for free-standing garden walls, paving.
In a small summer cottage there is no need to "fence" steep cliffs with wide slopes that will "eat" half of your lawn.
Nice well-kept mini-kindergarten can be placed even on one square meter. Several large almost square stones, laid close to each other on a site with a slight slope, will create a very natural group. It remains to fill it with succulents and creeping plants - and the home "Alps" are ready!

Remove sod from the ground, sprinkle and compact sand. Lay crushed stone, stones and bricks on top to get a wide "hill" of a natural shape with a height of 20-30 cm.
On the stones, sketch inverted pieces of turf (dry grass, branches). At the top, fill a layer of fertile ground with a thickness of 5 cm, mixing it with peat.
On top of the soil, lay fragments of sandstone of different sizes. Place their ledges, turn the most uneven and "corroded" sides out.
Do not cover the whole earth, leave free zones. Fill these free zones and “pockets” with fertile soil mixed with peat.

Plant the plants in the prepared soil between the stones. Miniature conifers and shrubs are planted at the bottom of the hill, varieties withering for the winter - at the top. To create a pocket for plants, place a pair of wooden blocks under the stones: they can be removed after a few days, when the stones are stabilized.
At the beginning of the season, granular fertilizers are poured in between the stones.

Advice for the summer owner
If the roller coaster style allows, plant herbs on it, primarily thyme and oregano. So you combine business with pleasure and save a place in the garden.
In the crevices
Sometimes for an alpine slide, only a couple or three species of plants are enough to harmonize with each other. But whatever plants you choose, if you want to plant them in existing crevices between the stones, make sure that these holes are not through, otherwise the earth can fall asleep and the roots will be outside. To prevent such trouble, first fill the opening of the cleft with small stones to make a closed pocket, and only then pour the substrate.
Alpine hill without stones
Author: O.Voronova
Everyone is used to the fact that the Alpine slide is a composition of plants and stones. But what if the whole idea of the slide is like, but there is no way to get the right stones in the right amount, or they just don’t like it, or the style of the garden is such that the stone doesn’t fit too well into it? Well. there are alpine hills without stones, and sometimes they are much easier to make than classic ones (with ground cover, flowering and unpretentious plants planted between stones and rocky dumps). The stones in these slides are replaced with other materials.
Choose a slide option
For an elevated hill (and they sometimes are flat), you first need to create a kind of relief, that is, a small hillock. Form it with rubble, expanded clay or broken bricks, then fall asleep with soil. Instead of large stones, use any of the following ideas.
Alpine slide made of snags. Such a hill is also called rutarium. Instead of stones, driftwood, beautiful roots and tree branches, stumps and saw cuts, logs and tree bark are used here. Hence the name comes from English root (root). All this wealth is laid out (like stones) on a hill: driftwood and roots are similar to large stones in the most prominent place, and wood saw cuts are similar to pebbles or decorative gravel as a dump. In between, alpine plants are planted.
Alpine hill with decorative chips - Finely chopped chips first steamed, processed with special compounds and then painted in different colors (both natural and bright). Further all is simple. On the hill plant Alpine plants (at a great distance from each other), and the intervals between them are covered with chips. If there is a desire that on such a hill there should be no weeds at all, before covering with chips, the ground is covered with geotextiles.
Alpine hill with broken ceramics. This option is suitable for those who have on the farm a lot of broken pots, dishes or ceramic tiles. They are first chopped into small fragments by a hammer, and the gaps already covered by the ceramic fill the spaces between the plants (as in the case of chips).
Classics of the genre
Plants for such non-trivial slides use classic ones, that is, those for traditional rock gardens. This is a soap dish, awl-shaped phlox, clove-grass, saxifrage, tenacious creeping, shaved, armeria, Carpathian bell, arabis, rock alyssa. Ferns are also suitable, but special, dwarf: onoklea, ossicles, vesicles. You can also use any stonecrops, only small ones: white, bent, thin, eversa, rocky, visible. Other plants are also suitable: any varieties of youngsters, gray fescue, dwarf hosts, cuff, wormwood, thyme, alpine asters, heathers. You can add one or two miniature conifers to the composition. In addition to alpine plants, it is quite acceptable to use other perennial or annual flowers, suitable in style and size, because a rock garden is a work of art. So do not be afraid to experiment.

Alpine hill - beauty in the country!

Probably, there is no summer resident who would not like to see an alpine hill on his site. She gives the garden a well-groomed appearance and very often becomes a separate pride of the owners. Winter is the most suitable time to plan an alpine hill on your site, slowly choosing your favorite composition.
One of the most important issues when planning an alpine hill is the composition of the plants that should be there. It is worth noting that each mistress decides for herself what to include in this ensemble. However, there are recommendations which plants should decorate your slide.
What do the experts say:
- the alpine hill should consist of rough shapeless stones, and not of boulders and stones with a smooth surface;
- on one hill it is recommended to plant no more than two identical plants, otherwise the composition and the author’s idea will be violated;
- the alpine hill should not be too high: the recommended height is 50-80 cm.
It is important to know
The composition of the slide should look natural and organically fit into the landscape. Cliffs and rocks most often do not look at the cottage and only spoil the general view. It is advisable to make compositions without a pronounced peak.
Very often you can see beautiful alpine slides that depart from the traditions of its creation.
It is advisable to select plants in such a way that they retain their beauty all season, otherwise withered leaves will spoil the entire composition, and hiding them behind the rest of the beauty of the slide is quite problematic. Therefore, it is better to use "flyers" - and your slide will be pleasing to the eye for a long time.
So how to plan an alpine hill?
The technology for creating an alpine hill consists of the following steps:
- We decide what size the slide will be, and in accordance with these data we choose a place.
- We plan sections of the hill.
- Draw a contour and remove the turf.
- We fall asleep drainage.
- We prepare fertile soil and fill it up.
- We form the "core" of the hill, pour the soil.
- We plant plants.
What place to choose alpine for the slide? We look at the following factors:
- the central zone of the site;
- entrance area;
- by the gazebo, pool, pond;
- in the garden;
- backyard;
- at retaining walls.

Alternatively, you can plant young, or "stone rose." This plant prefers sunny areas, but puts up with almost any soil and, if you periodically mulch the plantings slightly with humus and compost, rosettes grow up to 15 cm in diameter. Not only are the leaves very decorative, it is also young ... blooms.
Literally last year I bought several outlets of this plant on the market. She landed in the garden soil, poured. No more special efforts were made, only the weeds were removed around.
In August, four daughter rosettes emerged from the sinuses of the leaves.
To root children, loosened around the mother plant soil, in suitable places raked a bit of land to get holes of 3-4 cm depth, poured in them river sand. The earth did not water at the same time.
Carefully, without taking her away from the "mummy", she put the young twigs in there and again sprinkled with sand.
Above all the rosettes put small pebbles around so that they do not let the weeds grow and the natural moisture stay in the soil for a long time (besides, when they heat up during the day, at night they protect the plants to some extent from the cold). For the winter, only the fallen leaves of the trees fell asleep. Such a wintering plant was excellent. This year, my "mat" increased in size and pleased me with its flowering.

The motto of my alpine slide is that each has its own place in the rainbow, and all the plants I have are arranged in accordance with the rainbow spectrum: from red to purple.
The snow-white rutnik has a special role. White color helps to shade the brightness of the rainbow colors. I have located most of the charming rutnikov on the upper tier. Shining, joyful crumbling flowers open their petals with the first warmth, where the earth warms up faster. However, this primrose feels great in partial shade. Therefore, I planted a couple of plants at the base of the hill. There they bloom almost a month later, prolonging the spring charm of my garden.
Rutovnik is especially good because it does not need special care. Since this is a perennial plant, annual planting is not required. He is not afraid of Morozov, so it is not necessary to shelter him for the winter.

One of the most original and cheap solutions for decorating a summer house is the creation of a rutaria, or root garden. Everything will do for rutaria: fallen trunks, large branches, rhizomes, hemp. The procurement of material for compositions of the roots is usually carried out in the forest, on clearings and on the banks of the rivers, where there are avalizanimy "water, very picturesque driftwood.
The garden of the roots can be a composition of horizontally or vertically installed logs, in which cavities for decorative plants are hollowed out. Sometimes such emptiness is created by nature itself. Rutarium can be a conglomeration of snags reminding animals or fairy-tale characters. It can be just hemp with beautiful rhizomes. But in any case, it is necessary to protect the wood from decay and treat it with special means.

Near a small pond in my garden, I created a composition that includes a dry stream, an alpine slide, a bridge and a bench. Digging a hole under a pond tank, the earth was stacked in the opposite corner of the "room". Then she added a couple more wheelbarrows of fertile soil and made a slide. At its top put a pitcher (five years waiting for his "star hour" in the attic). On a winding line, between the stones, marked out the outline of a "dripping" dry stream. Then she dug a shallow groove, the bottom of which was laid with pieces of roofing material, so as not to leave chances for perennial weeds. The bed was covered with pebbles in a certain order: first, small pebbles "flow" small stones, then - larger, and to the pond - rather large. The brook crosses the path. And in this place my grandson and I threw a bridge, which was done in two hours. To the bridge logs did not creep under your feet and walk was safe, drilled holes on both sides and threaded them on the wire. The ends along the edges of the bundle were twisted and dug in a piece of wood (so that no one was accidentally injured). For the construction of the handrails, the alder tree was chosen to curve, which is visually close to the natural landscape.

Our summer residence is located in the old forest. Area
small. 11 acres, but we had to work hard. After all, we did everything with our own hands, without resorting to the help of landscape firms and gardeners. Initially there was an impenetrable thicket on the site. To build a house, we removed a few old birches and thickets of hazel. They left firs and oaks along the edges of the plot. And before the house broke the lawn (A).
The landscape would be done in a Mediterranean style. But in our climate this is not easy, because many southern plants do not tolerate our winters. So did not take root cypress-wiki, broom, rosemary. We tried a lot of things and left the most resistant plants. Our blue spruce trees are growing well. fir, larch (G). The thuja site is very decorated: among them there are both spherical and column-shaped. pintle-shaped. They feel great and annually give an increase of 25-40 cm. There are also deciduous shrubs: purple willow, Told Princess' spirea (B, D). which we cut “under the balls-. Dense spherical bushes form some floral perennials - euphorbia multicolor, stonecrops. And in total we have about 150 species of plants. Among them are exotic: amorphous. baptisia. hellebore.
Well and of course. roses. The 'Excelsia' and 'Flaments' wicker roses wrapping around arches bloom for more than a month, forming a whole pink mall. We plant annuals. We try to select flowers in warm colors: red, yellow, orange (B).

Our garden turned 20 years old. In the beginning we had a big garden and a fruit garden. But then I got carried away with landscape design and decided to remake everything. The area of the garden was reduced, the greenhouse was reduced. In the middle of the site, a recreation area with a lawn, cobbled platform, rose garden was organized. And last year I decided to create an alpine hill. A place for her was chosen between the lawn and the pool. To combine the water with the hill, I overlaid it with stones, which we collected for three years,
and in the fall they poured a hill. During the winter, the embankment settled and was ready for planting. So in the spring I already decorated it with stones and plants. She planted shrubs: Kuril tea, Japanese quince, spruce 'Konik', juniper Cossack. Then she placed flower perennials: astilbe, hosta, frankincense, kupena, irises, alpine aster, decorative tansy, woolly cleaner, stonecrops, creeping thyme.
Very revitalized her summer: three varieties of salvia and marigolds thin-leaved. Around the pool landed
irises, stunted marigolds, Blue Ball variety aggregate, gazania, gravilat. The pool and slide look as a whole. But now I see some errors in the selection and placement of plants, which I will correct in the fall and next spring.

Northern Flowers
Northerners need a lot of work to turn their holiday village into a small green paradise. The tropical heaters of the cold do not favor, therefore it is necessary to find vegetable reserves near the nature itself.
Especially pleasing spring perennials. As soon as the snow comes down, my Arabian bloom. It blooms abundantly all May and until mid-June. With the first warm summer days, it is joined by a simple, but very spectacular phlox, sublime, flaunting lilac flowers. A little later (from August to September inclusive), blossoms a delightful pink flowers blossom (sedum).
All these plants are well established on the Alpine hills, and in | any other, even the most unexpected places for the flower brotherhood. For example, on my site they are successfully located in a children's corner, where my little granddaughters play.
And as soon as the hot summer days come, we put a pool there.
I heard from some gardeners that the landowners are unpretentious in terms of lighting and nutrition, but I noticed that they feel much more comfortable in sunny places with well-fertilized soil. Therefore, I do not refuse to care for my plants. I feed, from early spring to autumn, generously water in drought, cut off faded and dry inflorescences. And imagine, I have not a single weed on the site! So - and my groundcover flowers delight me with beauty, and help me in the fight against plant pests.
The northern summer is short. How much strength, knowledge and skill are required for the dacha site to look smart and attractive! And, it seems, I succeed.

We arranged a rock garden and wanted it to be not only beautiful, but also useful. Therefore, we put a mother-and-stepmother and a smoke on him. They covered the entire alpine hill and allowed us to stock up on medicines.
Seedlings of the mother-and-stepmother are planted directly in the clay and we pour the hole on the ground from the garden. We put the smoke on the finished hill. The plant is one-year, does not require special care and multiplies itself by self-seeding. Grass gather during flowering, dry in the shade, and for urgent treatment use fresh.
Mother-and-stepmother is used for ailments associated with the lungs. With a cold, cough, acute bronchitis
make a decoction: 2-3 a leaf on 500 ml of fresh milk, boil and add the pork fat to the tip of the knife. Take 50 ml before going to bed until the disease passes.
Also, mother-and-stepmother helps with hair loss and dandruff, for the healing effect, 2 times a week, rinse the freshly washed head with decoction of leaves of mother-and-stepmother, nettle and burdock root - according to 2 st. l. on 1 l of water.
The dymyaka is used to stimulate the appetite and stimulate the digestive processes. Prepare a decoction of 10 g of dry herb on 0,5 liter of beer, take an 1 glass before each meal. The course of treatment lasts 2-3 weeks.
