My kandyks do not bloom well. What are they missing? They grow on a raised flower bed in light garden soil for about 4-5 years. Maybe it's time to transplant?

      - In my garden, kandyk or erythronium bulbs planted on an alpine slide or in a shady place in the garden, as a rule, do not dig out for 5-8 years. Therefore, I pay special attention to their feeding.
In April, when the snow is already starting to melt, I apply granular fertilizers: 20-30 g of potassium nitrate, 10 g of superphosphate / sq. m.
1-2 weeks after the snow melts, I give a second feeding, but liquid (the same components / 10 liters of water), and a week later - a third, adding 20 g of calcium nitrate to the solution. The ratio of potassium and phosphorus can be changed depending on the soil on the site.
Mineral salts contribute to the formation of renewal buds and the accumulation of starch in the bulbs. The plants should be fed in the evening, before that they spill the garden with water. A day after applying top dressing, the top layer of the soil should be slightly loosened and mulched.

Bulbs of kandyks, or erythroniums, are dug up in August, they do it carefully, with a pitchfork. Without drying, the nests are divided and immediately planted in a new place. Planting depth - 8-15 cm, planted shallower on heavy soil, deeper on light soil.
    Conditions for growth
Kandyk prefers a place in light shade and without stagnant water. Best placed in large groups on lawns, subtrees, mixborders, rocky gardens. The soil needs to be moist, but well-drained, in terms of texture - light, loose, with the addition of non-acidic peat. Acidity - neutral. In advance, a bucket and a half of mature humus, 200-400 g of bone meal (per square meter) are scattered over the surface of the selected area and the earth is dug to a depth of 30-40 cm.
When preparing the planting mixture, I advise you to apply a long-acting fertilizer AVA — 1 granule per onion. You can use another complex fertilizer (according to the instructions). Or take 100-150 g of superphosphate, 30-40 g of potash or ammonium nitrate (per square meter).

    BTW
In the first year, the planted bulb does not bloom. During the season, with good care, it forms two or three daughter bulbs. However, there are varieties that practically do not form a baby. But, fortunately, these plants reproduce well by seeds and can even self-seed. And if you already have a couple of varieties on the site, in 5-7 years it will be decorated with multi-colored seedlings.

    Collect the seeds of kandyka
Do not miss the ripening time of kandyk seeds so that they are not expelled to the soil. Otherwise, the ants will pull them away, and they will not rise where you want.
Kandyk belongs to the group of plants whose seeds need to be sown immediately after harvest so that they do not lose germination. Mature seedlings to a depth of 5-8 cm in open ground or in a pot, dig it in the garden, deepening the edges by 3-5 cm, so that the crops do not dry out.

In mid-May, my kandyks fade. Is it possible to divide and transplant them while leaves are still visible?

      - It is preferable to plant, transplant and divide kandyks every 4-5 years during the dormant period, closer to autumn, when the bulbs have already grown and accumulated nutrients. They do not need to be dried, it is better to plant them immediately at a depth of 8-10 cm (large bulbs of the Pagoda at 15 cm).

I wanted to plant kandyk in the garden. But got confused in the types of plants. Tell me which one is the most unpretentious?

      - One of my unpretentious favorites is European Kandyk. At the end of April, two, less often three elegant green oval-lanceolate-like leaves with a tiny bud between them appear from the earth. Light petals flutter in the wind, resembling a flock of outlandish butterflies crouched on a flower bed. This beauty lasts 2-3 weeks, in the sun and in the heat - less. Bred several varieties with flowers from white to purple.

Caucasian Kandyk leaves are similar to European ones, and white or cream flowers with yellow anthers open at about the same time.
The yellow-flowered kandyks, including the famous K. K. Tuolumni Pagoda, bloom even later. This variety has taken root in many garden plots and winter without shelter. The rest of the American kandyks and their varieties are more capricious than Eurasian ones.

Kandyk European landed in the garden 4 years ago. It appears in the spring of a leaf and disappears. What to do? And why is this happening? The apple tree grows under an adult apple tree.

There can be several reasons. Planted too deep or, conversely, - finely. Under the plant are many apple roots, and its root system can not be sufficiently flattened. Unsuitable for composition and insufficiently loose soil. Perhaps you planted too small a piece, and now it is only gaining strength.
Try to transplant a candle in a shady or looten place, in a loose, fertile, deeply cultivated soil (up to 40 cm). Plant on a depth of two heights of a bulb (on loam), or three heights of a bulb (on sandy soil). Remember: this plant can not stand the stagnation of water.

    Kandyk Tuolumnsky 'Pagoda' (Erythronium tuolumnense)

    Description.
This perennial plant, rather large for an ephemeroid, reaches a height of 40 cm. The leaves are light green, without spots. The species plant from which this variety originated usually forms a single flower, while the 'Pagoda' variety has always several flowers in the inflorescence. The flowers are saturated, gold is one hundred yellow. The variety was named because of the inflorescences, which are remotely resembling a pagoda in shape. In the middle band, the plant does not produce many flowers. They bloom in the spring, at the end of April. Flowering can continue (if the weather is favorable) for up to two weeks.
Agrotechnics. This very unpretentious plant, despite its exotic appearance, in the Moscow region hibernates without shelter. Blossoms annually. Of all the Kandyks, the Toulimannian and its varieties are the most shadowy, although it is better not to plant them in a dense shadow. Needs loose soil.

    Reproduction. Propagates by bulbs.

Using. A bright, spectacular ephemeroid. It is better to plant it in the garden in small groups, so it will be more noticeable. When composing compositions with his participation, do not forget that by the middle of June the plant will retire and instead of it there will be an empty land to be covered by other cultures.

How does the Japanese kandik feel in the middle band? How to multiply it from seeds? How many years can grow in one place?

Kandyk japanese (Fritillaria japonica) is quite capricious and willful, that's why it's rare in our gardens. Seeds need to be harvested on time, otherwise the ants will carry the "harvest" in the garden. Sow only freshly picked. Sow them to a depth of 3 cm, sprinkle with earth, pour. The next year, in spring, shoots will appear in April. The first flowering can be expected only at 6-7 year. Kandyks - long-livers, in good conditions can more than a dozen years grow in the garden and delight you with spring flowering.
