HAWORTIA - TYPES AND CARE
In general, the habitats of havortii can be characterized as semi-arid. As a rule, these are hilly plains or low mountains, where representatives of the genus can be found at an altitude of up to 2000 m. They grow on well drained brown soils with a large share of stony crushed stone.
Secrets of the attractiveness of Haworthia
Perhaps, the main thing that attracts in haworthia. - their diversity. Leaves can be round, triangular or rectangular in section, short and thick or long and thin as needle, smooth and shining or pubescent and covered with spines. The surface of the sheet can be rough, like a grater, or gentle with transparent windows, appearing like ripe grapes. Add to this the pearls, snowflakes, frosty patterns, white fluff and glowing lightning. Truly there is no such variety within any other kind.
Haworthia leaves are usually collected in a compact flat or hemispherical rosette, and their number varies from 5-6 to 300 or more. There are species with vertical columnar stems that grow in groups.
The color of haworthia leaves is diverse and can vary depending on the season and growth conditions.
All haworthias can easily be crossed with each other, and at present magnificent cultivars have been created that rival in beauty the creations of nature. Special credit for selection belongs to Japanese masters. Suffice it to say that only two species they revered - Haworthia truncata and Mauhani (N. truncata and N. maughanii) - produced more than a thousand unique cultivars. Many new products appear in America and Europe.
Most Haworthias are compact plants., in culture, almost all grow well in pots with a diameter of 7-9 cm, which makes them convenient for small collections.
Another component of the popularity - unpretentiousness and the ability to adapt to different conditions of detention. But this does not mean tolerance for negligent care. According to Gerhard Marx, a well-known breeder and researcher of Haworthia from South Africa, there are five important components of the successful culture of these succulents. Consider them in relation to our harsh conditions.
What is better for haworthia - substrate or soil mixture
Soil for haworthia should easily absorb moisture, but do not delay it. be sufficiently loose and porous, do not compact with time, so that even in a wet state, the roots can breathe. These requirements are met by a mixture of 3-4 parts of the nutrient soil (leaf, forest or pottery) and 6-7 parts of the disintegrant. As its most often recommended to use fine gravel. But you can also - perlite, expanded clay, pumice stone, broken brick, charcoal, foam, etc. For the roots, the nutrition of the mixture is not as important as its correct structure. Therefore, it should be both large and medium particles, but fine sand and dust should be avoided.
Dossier on the plant
The genus Haworthia unites from 60 to 500 species. The difference in estimates is due to the fact that some taxonomists identify large species with a variety of subspecies, while others estimate each species as a new species. The most reasonable is that many collectors consider the system developed by the botanist from South Africa Martin Bruce Bayer (Martin Bruce Bayer). Nevertheless, a single nomenclature of the genus has not yet been adopted.
The transplant is always carried out from dry ground to dry.
The pot is selected according to the size of the root system. Drainage - at least 1 cm. It is poured onto a little ground of coarse fraction and plant the plant, spreading the roots, then gently fill the remaining space with fresh soil just below the root of the roots. From above you can pour a layer of small pebbles. It is believed that they prevent too rapid drying of the soil, its overheating in the sun and erosion during irrigation, and also perform a decorative function.

Watering regime of Haworthia
Havortia is not adapted to a prolonged stay in a humid environment. Therefore, before watering, make sure that the soil has dried not only on the surface. but also in the root zone. It can be assessed by the weight of the pot or by the color of the drainage (seen from below in the holes). Water evenly with a small trickle over the entire surface of the soil. This is convenient to do with a syringe, syringe or a plastic bottle with a tube inserted into the cork. In summer, with open content and in hothouses, Haworthia can be sprinkled with sprinkling, but the wet sun should not get on wet leaves. Water is needed so much that it is enough to wet the soil, the excess from the tray must be drained.
With properly selected soil and watering regime, the soil through 3-4 days dries by half, after 7-10 days - completely. Only after this, the next watering is needed.
The drying speed of the soil depends on the growth phase of the plant, its size, the size of the pot, the moisture capacity of the soil, the humidity and the temperature of the surrounding air. And do not forget the golden rule: "it's better not to underestimate it, it works best and the summer months are not an exception. Watering "for future use" leads to rotting of the root system.
The plants are not demanding for the quality of watering plants, but the soil is clogged by hard water with hard water, a gray coating appears on the walls of the pot and the lower leaves. The problem can be solved by transplanting to fresh soil, but it is better not to admit it.

Optimal lighting for plants in the home
In the natural environment, Haworthians live in the shadow of tall grasses and shrubs, but this "shadow" can not be compared with scattered light in the northern latitudes, and even in the back of the room. Therefore, for these small plants, the bright windows of the eastern or south-eastern orientation are ideal, as well as the western ones. but the last two options may require light shading.
Often in the first months of spring, not even a very bright sun after a cloudy winter days causes burns, which manifest themselves in reddening of the skin. In severe cases, the affected tissue dies. For anti-shade, anti-mosquito net, tulle. After 2-3 weeks of adaptation, plants can easily tolerate brighter sunlight.
In summer, most species are uniformly colored in reddish or brownish tones. This can be a sort of attribute, for example, in Haworthia cv. Chocolate or cv. Kegani, and can talk about stress caused by excess light.
Havortia can be grown without natural light. In this case, for full growth, they need to provide illumination 10 000 lx for 12 hours using metal halide, mercury or fluorescent lamps.
Selecting the number and power of the lamps, consider heat dissipation and do not place them near plants.
If the stem in the rosette species lengthens, the leaves become lime, grow in size, stretch, the pattern disappears on them - this indicates an insufficient intensity of light.
With long-term maintenance in conditions of lack of light, Haworthia does not bloom and do not form children.

Temperature and ventilation of the flower at home
In the homeland of Haworthia, the air temperature can reach + 30-40 degrees, but they tolerate such extreme values due to the protection of other plants in the shade of which grow, as well as evaporation and air movement. On the sunny windowsill, the conditions are tougher and in the most fertile in the light, but the hot summer months of Haworthia can fall into stagnation, stop in growth. To avoid such undesirable events, follow the forecasts and if it's expected to be sunny and hot weather, shade the plants or temporarily remove them from the window sill. Strengthen the ventilation, slightly water the foliage. At summer maintenance of succulents in a greenhouse, use additional fans to improve air movement.
No less important for havortiy is the diurnal temperature difference.
Here, perhaps, the main provisions of culture, it remains only to unite them in a single system of care. Here are the main works that I spend in my collection, located on the windowsill of an ordinary apartment.

Calendar of work on caring for haworthia
Spring for my plants begins in March. By the beginning of the month, the duration of the day is approaching the optimum for the growth of 12 hours, and the sun is increasingly looking into the windows. The first is not copious watering at the beginning of the month, the next - through 2-3 weeks. If wintering has passed by the rules, the roots quickly restore their functions, and the leaves are poured in a couple of weeks, acquiring the usual form. From now on, I follow the state of the soil, watering not more often than once in 2-3 weeks.
With the onset of warm days in May-June watering as the drying of the soil, once a month in water can be added a special fertilizer for succulents. If by this time individual copies have not woken up, I examine the root system and, if necessary, re-root it. Healthy, noticeably grown-up specimens are transshipped, fast-growing - divide.
In May and July I intensify the airing. My living conditions are pretty cool even in summer, but if you are hot, be careful with watering - at high temperatures the plant will run into stagnation and inaccurate watering will cause the development of root rot.
Do not water "by inertia", be sure to check the condition of the soil. Watering in the heat can be replaced by spraying in the morning or evening.
August can still be quite hot, and with the onset of cool days in September-October Haworthia literally come to life, and it seems, they are trying to make up for lost time in the summer. It is clear that full-fledged development in conditions of reduced light day is impossible, so I prepare the plants for rest. In October, I water with an interval of 2-3 a week, and in November - not more often than once a month and only to prevent the complete degradation of the roots. The temperature, starting from November, gradually decreases to + 15 degree. - This can be done by fencing the window sill with plants with a transparent screen or film. In December, the temperature is reduced to + 5-8 degrees.
In December and February, I water once a month or less often, and then only with warming in the street. About 5-7 days before watering, the temperature in the plant area is raised to + 18-20 degree, and I keep it in this range a week after watering.
During the winter rest leaves can wrinkle, but this is not a reason to grab for the watering can, there is enough moisture in the plant's storing tissues to survive, the main thing is to preserve the roots.
In March a spring comes on the windowsill, and the circle closes.

HOW TO WATER JAVORTIA
Tell me, how often should you water the Haworthia in winter?
E.ZEMLYANSKAYA
Due to its compact size and unpretentious care, haworthia are perfect for growing at home. The main thing is to provide them with enough light (northern windows are not for them). But it is better to water the plants moderately most of the year, for example, once every 7-10 days, and even less often in winter.
Visitors from the Southern Hemisphere, Haworthia often try to grow in winter, but with an obvious lack of light, they can stretch out and lose their decorative appearance. How can this process be contained? First of all, reduce the interval between watering to 2-3 weeks. Do not be afraid, it is customary for haworthia to stay in dry ground for a long time: they store water for future use in thickened leaves. Plants will only benefit from training their succulent "abilities".
So, watering in winter is rare, but, as before, with complete soaking of the earthen coma, until water appears in the pan (remove the excess). Water is at room temperature, cold is undesirable. Fertilizers are excluded.
Before the next watering, it will be useful to check the moisture of the earth by touch. The rate at which it dries will vary depending on the size and material of the pot, soil structure, ambient temperature, plant root condition and other factors. If it is even slightly damp, refrain from watering for now.

HAWORTIA IS ALWAYS DECORATIVE
© Author: Nikolai CHROMOV
Haworthia is an amazing succulent plant, which grows naturally in South Africa. The succulent was named after the rather famous botanist Adrian Haworth.
Everything about Haworthia is great, but first of all, the fleshy leaves, which have a dark greenish color, which form rosettes located literally at the surface of the soil. Like all succulents, haworthia is capable of accumulating moisture in its thick leaves, where it is stored and used as moisture in the soil is depleted.
The edge of the leaf blades itself is interesting; most often it is jagged, but it can also be smooth. Sometimes fancy convex white tubercles form on the leaves, giving the plant even more charm.
Surprisingly, Haworthia also blooms, although its snow-white small flowers are not particularly beautiful.
In terms of soil, Haworthia prefers a mixture of pumice with coconut substrate, but it also grows well in regular soil for succulents, which can be purchased at any flower shop.
The flower loves moderate temperatures, approximately 22-24 degrees, and if it is colder or hotter, it may hibernate and stop developing.
What the flower fears most is not heat, but cold; when the temperature drops to zero, its outer leaves may begin to rot.
The best option for placing haworthia is the eastern window sill. The plant simply loves light before noon, but the hot sun in the afternoon will be dangerous for it, so if you have a choice - sun until 10-11 am or later, then it is better to choose the first option. If you want the plant to fully develop and not be “one-sided,” then about once a month turn its other side towards the light. In winter, when there is practically no sun and the days are very short, it is quite possible to install additional lighting lamps.
As for watering, watering once a week is enough for Haworthia. It is important to use settled water, melt or rain. The flower reacts quite well to acidified water; for example, you can add a couple of teaspoons of white wine vinegar to 10 liters of water and water it with this water.
Is it possible to grow haworthia outdoors??
Only if you live in a region where the climate is not characterized by sudden changes in temperature and is characterized by winters during which the temperature does not drop below zero.
It is allowed to take the haworthia outdoors in the summer, but it is important to protect it from the burning rays of the sun and place it in sparse shade.
