What care do you need from cowberry?
I really want to grow bilberries in the garden.
Write, please, what conditions the plant needs, what kind of soil it likes, what care is needed?

It’s easy to grow lingonberries in the garden. The main thing is to create the same growing conditions for her as in the natural environment - the forest.
First you need to choose an open sunny place, not subject to excessive moisture.
✓Important factor
Roots of cranberries are located in the surface layer of soil thickness of 10-12 cm, so it should be constantly wet. In the absence of rain, watering is carried out 2 times a week. But one should not allow long-term stagnation of surface waters, because, due to lack of air, plants are strongly oppressed and often die.
Soil for cranberries should be loose, moisture-absorbing, breathable and acidic (pH from 3 to 5). If the acidity of the soil is weakly acidic or close to neutral (pH more than 5,1), the plants do not develop and may die. To increase the acidity, the soil is acidified with a solution of vinegar (at the rate of 100 g of table vinegar for 10 l of water), or in the spring or fall, ground sulfur (10-15 g / m 2).

Preparation of nutrient soil for growing cowberry
As the basis of the nutrient soil, the acid weakly decomposed horse or transitional peat is best suited.
On mineral soils, a bed under lingonberries is prepared using special technology. Dig a trench 120 cm wide and 25-30 cm deep and fill it with a mixture of transitional or high peat with coarse sand (3: 1), if the soil in the garden is clay. Or - with soil removed from the trench, if it is sandy (in the same ratio), and slightly compacted. If there is no peat, then the excavated soil from the trench is mixed with forest litter (fallen foliage with a high content of needles) in a ratio of 1: 1. If the soil is medium - or high loamy, then add another piece of sand. With close standing groundwater at the bottom of the trench, a drainage substrate is first poured: gravel, crushed stone, broken brick, small pebbles ...
Fertilizers for cowberries
Before planting, the soil is fertilized with mineral fertilizers. For every 3 sq. M of the landing area, a matchbox of ammonium sulfate, potassium sulfate and superphosphate is brought in. Fertilizers are embedded in the soil by rakes, watered and proceed to planting.
✓Remember!
Manure or bird droppings under lingonberries must not be made! These fertilizers alkalize the soil (which is unfavorable for the crop) and contain a large amount of nitrogen, which is why you can simply “burn” plants. Potassium fertilizers containing chlorine (potassium chloride, potassium salt, sylvinite, etc.) are also not introduced.

Planting cranberries
The best time for planting is spring (before the start of shoot growth) or autumn, when the annual shoots are strong enough. Planting material
- seedlings - one or two years. Landing pattern
- 30 × 30 cm.
The seedlings are deepened to the leaves.
After planting, it is abundantly watered and the soil around the plants is sprinkled with a layer of mulch about 3 cm thick. Peat, pine sawdust or crushed bark is used on sandy soil, sand or gravel on peat soil. This retains moisture and prevents weed germination.
Immediately after the spring planting and until complete rooting in a new place (within one or two weeks), the arcs are set over the plantations and covered with lutrasil.
Care of plantings of cranberries
During the summer the beds are systematically watered, weeded and loosen. The fertilization of the planted plants begins with the same fertilizers and doses from the third year that they brought in before planting. In order not to burn plants, they are introduced in liquid form. You can use complex fertilizers (Kemiru-Universal).
At 2-3-th year of planting are thickened due to the formation of a young seedling from underground shoots.
Plantings thin out, and remote bushes are used as planting material. At the age of 10-15, bushberry cranberries will need a rejuvenating early spring pruning. Cut the oldest branches at a height of 4-6 cm, which stimulates the growth of new shoots.
For winter, cranberries are not sheltered, but if there is no snow cover for a long time and there is a very frosty and windy weather, it is better to cover the beds with lutrasil or spunbond to prevent the terrestrial part of the plants from desiccating.
During flowering, cranberries can withstand frosts up to-3 C.
At lower temperatures it is covered with non-woven covering materials. During the formation of buds and before the flowering begins, shelter can not be removed. When the first flowers begin to bloom, in the daytime it is removed.

Our grandfather always harvested cranberries and her leaves. Now it's time for me, to be interested in its use.

Loop Lingonberry (September 5) - Lingonberry ripen in the forests and swamps. Berry is respected for its healing properties: juice is used for colds and tuberculosis. Dense, hard lingonberry leaf is harvested in September, at the time of picking berries; they don’t harvest in the summer - it turns black during drying. Dry in a dry, ventilated place (or in the oven at 35 * C), stored in linen bags for up to 3 years. Leaves on the composition of vitamins (especially the content of vitamin C) and minerals are not inferior to those who drink cranberry tea, vitamin deficiency is not threatened.

Lingonberry seedlings are planted in the spring (in late April - early May).
Put the plants at the same depth as they grew in the nursery. The earth around the young plant is compacted and well watered.
The soil on the cowberry should be under a constant layer of mulch. I advise you to fill it with sand or sawdust.

I want to tell you how lingonberries can be propagated by dividing a bush or segments of rhizomes that have buds or growth shoots. They must be harvested in late April - early May. In open ground, it is necessary to prepare a substrate from slightly decomposed peat with the addition of sand (3: 1). There
it is necessary to plant rhizome cuttings of length 10-12 cm with the kidney. After rooting, the plants grow 1-2 a year later, after which they can be planted in a permanent place, already more seriously prepared for the growth of cranberries.

Lingonberry vulgaris - a small shrub with dark green leaves. In May, it is covered with tassels of pink flowers, replaced by juicy red berries. Lingonberry is literally a panacea for urolithiasis, jade, gout, as an anti-inflammatory and diuretic. Do not miss the time of collecting leaves, it comes during the flowering period or in the autumn when the berries ripen.

We collect lingonberries on our site
Not for one year I tried to "tame" a forest cow, but I could not do it.
When she decided to stop her experiments, she accidentally discovered seedlings of garden lingonberry in the nursery catalog. Now I get a crop of healthy berries twice a season - in early August and October.
Cowberry loves good lighting and acidic soils, so the dugout box was dug in a sunny spot and prepared a soil mix of peat, sand and pine sawdust (ratio of about 5: 1: 1). Acidity, as shown by the meter, is four, which is optimal for cranberries.
Young cowberry from time to time watered, weeded. Feed the beginnings on
third year. In the spring - with nitrogen fertilizer (1 tbsp. Per 1 sq. M, but it is better to use not in dry form, but dissolved in water, so as not to burn the leaves). During fruiting she used superphosphate (30 g per 1 sq. M) and potassium sulfate (15 g per 1 sq. M).
In the heat you need to take care of the mulch. It protects cranberries from drying, improves the air permeability of the soil and mutes the weeds. Its layer must be at least 2 cm. Mulch better choose one that will acidify the soil. I used fir wood chips.
My cranberries have never been affected by pests or diseases. But I always inspect the plants to stop their spread in time.
