Annual vines and vertical landscaping with the help of these plants

Lianas annuals and vertical gardening
Annual plants have a lot of advantages. First, they only need 1,5-2 months to show themselves in all their glory (for perennials this period is 2 - 3 years). Secondly, it is a fairly cheap planting material - the cost of seeds is incommensurably small compared to the cost of a single seedling. And finally, you do not have to puzzle over how to hide them and save them in winter, because this beauty is for one season.
The theme of vertical gardening is not new, but it is unlikely that it will ever exhaust itself and become uninteresting the more fascinating it is, if it is not a question of trivial truths that have come down from the pages of the directories, but of the personal experience of a practicing horticulturist.
Instead of the preface
I will not be mistaken if I say that every lucky owner of the garden plot at least once in his life, looking at the cherry potato rows with the blooming phytophthora and the invasion of visitors from Colorado, thought: "Should I leave everything and do it the cultivation of roses?»
In this case, the eye will not come across blackened and eaten leaves, but will rejoice in beauty! This opinion every year finds itself more and more supporters, especially among fairly young people, to whom a piece of land inherited.
With a detailed calculation, it turns out that the costs of fertilizers, equipment and planting material do not pay off with the final result. Especially in the high season on the market you can buy the necessary vegetables for winter harvesting without depleting the family budget. And then the question arises: what to do with the land that the older generation used to handle so carefully that only narrow paths remained between the ridges?
For many, especially those whose plots are quite far away, and getting on them is obtained only on weekends, the answer arises by itself.
They decide that it is enough to plant several beds with vegetables and berries, and transform the rest of the space into a recreation area, decorating it with ornamental plants. Confirmation of the correctness of my judgments is that recently there has been a growing demand for literature on landscape design.
People began to wonder how to competently break a lawn, to make an alpine hill, zaderkorirov hozpostroi. After all, you want to relax after a week's work and really relax, gain strength for new achievements.
But right away I will clarify that caring for ornamental plants requires a lot of physical and material costs. But, apparently, our psyche is so arranged that, when we see man-made beauty, caressing eyes, all the difficulties recede into the background.
Vertical landscaping of the site
So, the choice is made!
You decided to transform your site and make it a dream garden. Where to begin? Look around and find out why your gaze stumbles on so intrusively. Most often it is a lonely booth at the end of the garden, a sagging shed, and a fence surrounded by a mesh-rabitsa, is not the top of grace. And if with all this you have the full order, then you probably want to arrange a secluded corner with a gazebo or a bench. Perhaps you do not have a summer house, but you are the owner of an apartment with a balcony, which you want to turn into a paradise. And then you can not do without vines, which are also called green verticals.

Which plants to choose for vertical landscaping
Begin with annuals or immediately thoroughly to perennial plants? It is sometimes difficult for an ignorant man to orient himself. In my opinion, it is always necessary to start with the simplest, in this case it is an annual, curly culture. At the same time, be sure to look at the special literature on this issue,
attention to the requirements of this or that plant to the conditions of growth. After all, the culture that perfectly shows itself in the Crimea, is not always suitable for cultivation in the middle belt of Russia or Belarus. However, despite the rather complicated climate, we can enjoy the lush greenery and the bright, abundant flowering of various lianas from spring to late autumn.
Important information
Information on packages with seeds is very useful, but if you are not familiar with some plant, I recommend that you learn more about it from the literature before purchasing. Otherwise, you will not be disappointed.
I will give some examples. We read the inscriptions on packages with seeds of asaryn and tunneling: "Liana up to 2 m in height, can be used for vertical gardening and decoration of farm buildings". In fact, these are amazingly beautiful exotic plants that look great in hanging baskets or braid the green props (well, let's say, a small hut in a pot), but they are not suitable for the formation of a dense curtain and much less decorating hozpostroek. On the wall, they just get lost. The same can be said of the Ipomoea Kvamoklit with such spectacular stellate flowers.
Keep the distance when planting lianas!
A typical mistake of many beginning florists is the thickening of plantings. It seems to you that the more plants will sit, the more splendid and denser the flower spot will turn out. However, in fact, with a dense planting the plants are stretched, become weak and bloom poorly. That's why I prefer planting seedlings directly into the ground. After all, we always sow "with a stock" (and suddenly it will not rise!), And then it becomes a pity to weed out excess.
When planting seedlings on a permanent place, it is easy to maintain the required distance. And by the time of seedling transplantation, you will have the opportunity to thoroughly weed and prepare the soil in the future flower garden (the weeds do not need time to swing - they grow without any additional questions), thus creating optimal conditions for the further growth of our lianas.
On each bag with seeds, provided that you do not get them from the "suitcases", the optimal distance between the plants is indicated. At first it will seem that a lot of land is left unoccupied - let it not frighten you. Overpower yourself, do not try to create a solid green carpet at once, and after a while your efforts will be rewarded with well-developed flowering plants.
Sweet pea
Each of you at least once inhaled the aroma of sweet pea. Its fairly large flowers of a variety of bright colors resemble a flock of butterflies, crouched to rest. This light in agrotechnics, a cold-resistant plant will please you with abundant and prolonged flowering, if you land the seeds directly into the ground at the end of April. I imagine how many will be delighted to learn that you can do without seedlings.
At the time of buying pea seed fragrant be sure to pay attention to the description of each grade. In an article, I deducted that there are more 200 cultivars of this plant and not all of them are characterized by violent growth. There are also compact forms that reach just 30-40 cm in height. In own way it is interesting, but we set out to make a high green screen. To do this, the best varieties of the group Spencer. In our conditions, the seeds of fragrant pea are ripening, so, having planted it only once, you can constantly have your planting material.

Nasturtium foreign - liana at least where
In addition to all known decorative beans with bright red flowers and dense foliage, as well as various varieties hipey with large multi-colored gramophones (blue-blue tones predominate) and heart-shaped leaves, I would like to dwell on a rather rare plant in our region - nasturtiums of foreign.
With her close relatives, nasturtiums large and nasturtium shchitosnoy, I think almost everyone knows. Who does not know the plants grown from large "peas" with rounded, like a shield, succulent leaves and bright, orange-red bell-bellied flowers!
However, looking at the foreign nasturtium, it is difficult at first sight to guess their relationship. This magnificent liana, up to 3 m long, with five lobed leaves and yellow bamboo flowers resembling exotic moths, only resembles the usual species with its large seeds, collected in three pieces.
For an earlier flowering it is desirable to grow nasturtium through seedlings. In the middle of March, soak the seeds for a day (when ripe they turn into wrinkled black "denticles") and plant to a depth of 1 cm. Be prepared for the fact that they rise long and unfriendly. But, even growing 2 - 3 plants, you can create an openwork screen width of up to 0,5 m. The seeding method of cultivation will allow you to collect your seeds. Several times I observed samosev this plant. Such specimens blossomed, of course, later, and the seeds did not mature, but the decorative effect due to foliage was stunning.
My disappointment
Often sellers recommend for vertical gardening seeds kobei climbing. The colorful packaging shows spectacular, huge bells with hanging stamens - it's impossible to tear off the look. I got caught up in it too! But I was disappointed.
To begin with, in the purchased bag there were only five seeds, but it was quite expensive. Only 2 - 3 pcs. Even planted in February (according to the instructions), they began to bloom only closer to the autumn, when the first frosts had already appeared. The flowers really turned out to be very large, but for a long time they remained green and, only blossoming, acquired a purple color. For the sake of justice, I note that the foliage was quite abundant and dense.
Black Eyed Peas
For those gardeners who want to combine useful with pleasant, I can advise using tall beans asparagus for vertical gardening. This plant, planted in May right in the ground, quickly wraps around all the supports and will please you with abundant greens, rather nice white or purple flowers and, most importantly, long, juicy, delicious pods with beans. Here you have a double benefit.
Of course, this brief excursion into the world of annual "climbers" does not cover the whole variety of climbing plants. But I decided to dwell only on the cultures I personally tested, adapted to the conditions of growth in the northern part of Belarus.
✓On a note:
When growing any vines, it is necessary to provide support for them. Naturally, the plants planted along the fence will not need them, but in other cases the easiest way to decorate wooden buildings is to stuff carnations and pull the fishing line.

Seedlings of annual lianas
For some reason, we panically fear everything related to seedlings. Although I would advise those who want to enjoy the beauty of their own creation as early as possible, do not neglect such an opportunity.
To do this, it is not at all necessary to push the long-suffering window-sills to boxes, but enough in mid-April (the time frame for the Vitebsk region) to cover with a film a little fellow or just arcs and arrange a "hotbed" there.
For better soil heating, crops can be covered with a spunbond. By the end of May, when the threat of frost passes, you will already have a strong, unextended, hardened seedling.
Do not be embarrassed that its appearance and size will be inferior to that sold on the market. Your seedlings will transfer the transplant painlessly, quickly go into growth and catch up with the size of the purchased brothers.
On a separate line
Liana Knyazhik
Knyazhik (Atragene) - a liana from the family of the Lyutik family, belonging to the genus Clematis and isolated by botanists into a separate subgenus, numbering about 20 wild-growing species. The area of the prince is wide - this liana can be found almost in all regions of Europe and Asia, from the Alpine mountains to China, Siberia and the Far East. Many types of princes, unlike clematis, are highly frost-hardy, so they can be grown without shelter, even in regions with severe winters.
The princes are planted in the open ground in the spring, at the end of the frost period. The technology of landing princes and clematis is identical. Water princes in the summer at least once in 7-9 days abundantly. Feeding must be done every 2 weeks by organic and mineral fertilizers in turn.
Reproduction of the prince
It is not recommended to transplant and share bushes of princes - the stems of bushes are too brittle. Multiplying can be the rooting of the leash. but this process is quite lengthy and will take all summer.
Diseases and pests
Diseases are identical to clematis diseases.
Varieties of princes
The most popular varieties of princes, cultivated in the culture, are the prince Alpine, Siberian, large-lobed and Okhotsk.
Alpine prince (A. alpina) native to the mountainous regions of Central Europe. It is a liana up to 3 m high with drooping flowers of blue or violet shades up to 6 in diameter. Blooms in May-June, sometimes in late summer there is a repeated flowering on the shoots of the current year. Based on the original species, many garden forms have been created.
Knyazhik the Siberian (A. sibirica) is found everywhere in Southern Siberia, grows well in partial shading. The flowers are white, sometimes with a yellowish tinge, fragrant. The view is also represented by various garden forms. Blooms in July - August.
The great-lipped prince (A. macropetala) comes from the Far East and is a sun-loving liana up to 3 m high with blue-purple wilted double flowers. Blossoms somewhat later the prince of the Alpine. Its garden forms are distinguished by a variety of colors.
Prince of Okhotsk (A. ochotensis) in nature grows in the northeast of China. It differs in white flowers with an unusual bright-violet tint. Blooms in June. There are numerous forms and varieties.

Azarina - a rival to clematis
It is an annual winding, which you mention in passing (when grown in the garden) a plant with tubular flowers can become an ornament for any garden. In beauty and splendor, it vies with clematis.
Предпочтения
Azarina prefers bright, sunny and warm places. Arid summer has a bad effect on the appearance of the plant, so additional watering is required. In addition, the landing site should be well protected from the wind, and the soil should be loose and breathable, with a good drainage system.
Since azarin is a fast-growing culture, the support that protects it from strong winds and supports the shoots must be prepared before planting. For these purposes, a metal mesh with large cells is well suited.
For prolonged flowering, you need to carry out weekly fertilizing. For this chicken droppings are good. In the early spring, nitrogen fertilizers should also be introduced, but during the vegetation period, Azarin should be fed with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. Good mulching, it will help to conserve moisture in the soil.
Reproduction
Propagate Azarin with seeds and cuttings. Seeds are planted in seedlings at the end of winter, sprouts may not appear for quite some time, sometimes seeds need stratification.
Wintered specimens can be propagated by cuttings. They are cut and planted in wet sand for rooting. Young plants can be planted in open ground when the threat of frost passes. The distance between plants is 50 cm.
Council
In order to achieve a good bushing of azaryn, shoots should be regularly plucked.

What is the best way to "drape" the wall of the barn, which does not fit into the overall picture of the site?
#
In each garden there are vertical surfaces that need to be landscaped. And for such purposes, you can choose an absolutely unusual plant - decorative beans.
It is a winding one-year-old vine. Stems of beans can wrap the support to a height of up to 4 m. During the flowering period, the vine is adorned with bright tufts of inflorescences with small flowers. Decorative beans are inedible and are not used for food. The growth rate is very high: for a month the stems can stretch to the height of 3 m.
Sowing in open ground is carried out at the end of May or in the first half of June. In order for seeds to sprout faster, they must be soaked in water for a day. If you plant dry seeds, they will germinate 2-3 weeks.
For early flowering, you can sow in separate pots for seedlings. It should be done in early May, and in summer by transshipment young plants are planted in the garden.
Decorative beans - a very thermophilic plant, it freezes at the slightest frost. It grows well in sunny areas, in the shade it will also have a beautiful and luxurious appearance of a green liana, although its flowering here is less spectacular.
Soils should contain a sufficient amount of phosphorus fertilizers, it is desirable to make humus, but nitrogen fertilizers should be excluded in the summer, otherwise there will be lots of greenery, and flowering can not wait. Liana loves moisture, so watering should be frequent and abundant. In late summer, the beans grow pods that give seeds. They can be collected when the pods completely dry (September), and used for reproduction.

SUPPORTS FOR LIANS
Annual vines at the beginning of summer need to be equipped with supports. We select them taking into account how the creepers will climb them. If with the help of antennae, like sweet peas and decorative beans, a synthetic mesh or simply stretched durable threads will do. If plants wrap around, like bindweed and morning glory, they will need thin, but rigid supports - from wire or thin rods. We attach the plants to the supports with a soft tape or wire. Each stem must be tied individually.

Doubtful radiant is a perennial climbing plant with beautiful fruits. With the help of antennae, it can climb along props to a height of 4 m. The leaves are broadly oval, at the base are heart-shaped, serrated. The flowers of the tladiants are large, dioecious, located on different specimens. Male flowers are wide, ringed, with petals bent back, golden yellow, collected in racemose inflorescences; female - flat, single. The plant blooms for a very long time - from July to September. It has decorative bright red fruits with spectacular green stripes. But in order to get them, the plant needs to be artificially pollinated. Tladianta loves fertile soil, warmth and sun. In the summer she needs regular watering. In the autumn, the stems die off. It requires shelter for the winter.
