How to make a bench around a tree
For centuries, benches around trees have been the favorite garden furniture for owners of suburban areas and landscape designers.
Made of wood or metal, with or without backrest, very simple or decorated with ornaments - they never go out of style.
Why is this so? Perhaps because large trees are attractive to people, under their branches a person feels protected. Perhaps because in summer there is no place more beautiful than in the sparse shade of a tree crown. And perhaps the reason is also that the bench with the subtree is a symbol of the unity of man with nature, and the tree with the bench around it becomes part of the inhabited garden.
The most important part of this pair, of course, is a tree - without a tree there is no bench around the Bench should not constrain or damage the trunk. The distance between the seat and the tree should leave room for the trunk to grow in thickness.
The legs of the bench should not damage the roots. Our simple wooden bench best suits these requirements, in addition, it serves the tree with a beautiful frame. Bench is suitable for trees with girth up to 185 cm, or diameter 60 cm.

To make a bench around a tree,
- planed sawn timber 45 x 70 mm (A), about 9 m
- planed sawn timber 70 x 70 mm (B), about 2 m: 4 pieces in 480 mm
- terraced boards 22 x 95 mm, about 30 m: 8 pieces in 520 mm (S),
- 8 pieces in 650 mm (D), 40 pieces of different lengths (E)
- screws
- corners: 8 pieces
Features of lumber
If the dimensions of the bars and support boards are slightly different from those indicated here, it does not matter - the design remains unchanged. The outer frame in any case should be square; the length of both short sides is decisive; for long sides, double the thickness of the beam should be added.
This bench, like all the furniture and structures that are installed in the garden for a long time, is made of impregnated wood, resistant to weather influences. All structural details are impregnated under pressure. A tree impregnated under pressure does not need to be painted, as there is enough impregnation to protect it, and since all the sections are closed, they also need not be treated. Moisture can be absorbed into the tree only through the lower sides of the legs, and therefore this surface must be covered with azure or wood oil. Very good protection is also a wax reminding composition for protecting the ends of wood, which covers the surface with a water-repellent layer.
The crone of the old willow, under which stands the bench, is light and airy, leaves rustle from the slightest blow of the wind. Leaning back on the rough bark of the trunk is very pleasant
The plan clearly shows the location of the corners. Four legs have sufficient load capacity. "If you are counting on heavy loads, you can install additional legs in the inner square. This can lead to difficulties with installation on uneven ground.

Do you prefer a home-made bench with a back?
The bench consists of four separate parts and four loose seats, as well as backs. The manufactured parts form an octagonal bench. Slightly tilted backrest is very comfortable. Thanks to the thoughtful design of the legs with only two points of support in each seat, the bench is stable and very load-lifting. The internal diameter is 65 cm, that is, the bench is suitable for trees with a barrel circumference up to 200 cm.
Suitable wood for making benches
Wood used in the garden must be resistant to weathering. Larch and species of tropical wood are known for their special natural endurance. In less resistant rocks, weather resistance is achieved through special treatment. To do this, apply protective impregnation, which must be periodically renewed. Increasingly, coniferous wood (especially pine) is impregnated under pressure. The pine has a lot of knots, but due to the fibrous structure, the impregnation penetrates deeply. Impregnated wood does not require additional protection. The cutting surfaces need only the cutting surfaces.
We master the bench with our own hands - photo and work progress
- The bench around the tree can be built quite quickly. Saw the frame and foot parts according to the dimensions indicated on the materials list. For sawing the seat boards, which are chamfered at 22,5 gr., A miter saw will be useful.
- Frame parts (A) connect with the help of corners. Angles screw flush to the ends of the four internal parts.
- Then align the parts in the desired position and secure the free sides of the corners.
- The legs (B) are installed in the corners of the outer frame. On the one hand they are fastened by four, on the other - two screws.
- Supporting boards for the seat (C) at the end on both sides are chamfered at 22,5 g; as a result, you get an obtuse angle in 135 gr. The slices are subsequently closed with slats (D).
- Saw one end of the beveled seat board, then measure the length and cut off the other end. The first set of five boards will serve as a template for the remaining segments.

In the garden they sawed the apple tree, but it was not necessary to uproot - on the family council I proposed to create a place around it for rest!
On the basis of the apple tree, the table top was fixed. Cut the trunk of another tree into chocks. Of these, convenient "stools" turned out. The floor between them was laid out from individual cuts, ramming into a thick layer of sand. They encircled this place in a circle with pieces of turf to avoid the erosion of sand during the rains.
To protect from the weather, we laid a rest corner with a tent on a metal frame. The table was laid with a table cloth on a fabric basis with PVC-coating.
In the summer we like to gather for a tea party.
