    About wintering panicled hydrangea

even young panicle hydrangea bushes winter well in midland gardens, but provided that they are protected from the north wind. To warm the root system in autumn, the trunk twigs are mulched with peat.

    I do so
To protect the plantings from the destructive north wind, I first remove leaves from the bushes, bind the shoots and bend to the ground, fixing with brackets. After that I crosswise over the bushes of the arc and cover with non-woven material (I use "Agrospan" with a thickness of 60 μR in 4-6 layers). Before the establishment of stable night frosts, I leave it to ventilate the vents. As soon as the “minus” becomes permanent, I close them. So that the shelter remains dry, I spread and carefully fix the layer of waterproof film.

In spring, in March-April, I open the bushes in stages, finally - after spring frosts. The buds already swell on the branches and young leaves open.

    Hydrangea paniculate: cut
I liked the popular varieties of panic hydrangea with young, not yet lignified cuttings, their rooting - about 90%.
I cut cuttings in the middle of June from lateral shoots up to 0,5 mm in diameter from the middle part of the bush, on which inflorescences are not laid. Their length is about 20-25 cm, with 2-3 pairs of leaves, under the bottom node I make an oblique cut, leaving 1,5-2 cm of shoot. Larger leaves cut off by half or 2 / 3 to reduce the evaporation of moisture. I do not touch the apex point of growth. I put cuttings on 10-16 hours, it is more convenient - at night, in a jar with a solution of "Heteroauxin" (according to the instructions).
During this time I prepare a light nutrient soil mixture: in the peat soil I add mature compost or well-repellent humus, as well as agroperlite in large granules (3: 1: 1).

The latter well loosens the soil, making it water- and air-permeable. Pots with a diameter of 10-15 cm with wide drainage holes are filled with soil, I spill it with water until completely moistened. I plant cuttings one at a time, deepening on 3-4 cm, soil around compact. I cover the pots with cut plastic bottles with lids, lightly pressing them into the soil, i.e. creating a greenhouse effect with high humidity inside. I leave my minimites in the garden in a shady and cool place, where the sun's rays do not reach, in this case, there is practically no need to water the cuttings (or very rarely). Through 1,5 months they take root and noticeably move into growth.

I take off the bottles, carry the surviving seedlings to the semi-latent place and keep them there till the autumn, periodically watering and feeding every three weeks with a complex mineral fertilizer (according to instructions) or nettle infusion. For the winter I pour pots in the garden, I cover with an old spunbond. Next spring young plants are planted in a permanent place. With good care, they bloom on 2-3 year.

Not every gardener dares to plant large-leaved hydrangea. on the one hand, she is extremely attractive, she has many beautiful, vibrant varieties, on the other - she is rather capricious. But if you still decide, do not lose. And you can plant narrow-leaved lavender in the company, the plant is also not the easiest - an unusual, but expressive combination.
Hortensia is appropriate in various combinations, for example, near bluish coniferous and multi-colored roses.
Giant inflorescences of hydrangea 'Invincible Spirit' are perfectly combined with purple barberry. And as a background for such a duet, a dense ordinary landing of a thuja western BraDanf is suitable.
Another plus of hydrangeas is that it is not damaged at all by pests and pathogens. It's in shape all season-from spring to late autumn.
A good hydrangea is also late in the autumn, when its large inflorescences become transparent and rustle from the slightest blow of the breeze.
Panicled hydrangea 'Limelight' and Kalinolistny 'Diabolo' - a harmonious combination.
Shade-tolerant hydrangea will live well under the crowns of trees. Plant a few multi-colored): and varieties of different heights and hydrangea treelike, and large-flowered hydrangea. and dilute slightly with hosts - a bright near-barrel circle is ready.
Hydrangea is a friendly plant, it is not difficult to find a company for her, for example, varieties with large inflorescences look good with pink and red roses and purple

    Beauty changing color
Last summer I visited a friend in the country and could not stop to admire her magnificent flowers. It was a large hydrangea of a variety of colors: with white, lilac, pink and blue petals. The girlfriend was carried away by hydrangeas after a trip to Japan. where they grow in abundance. Having visited a girl's flower garden, I was "sick" with hydrangeas.
Cuttings from the shoots, which they brought from the dacha, placed in a nursery with a light fertile soil. She drank well, wrapped the sawdust and made a shelter of non-woven fabric. A month later, when all the sprouts took root, they transferred them to a permanent place in the flower garden.
Hydrangea is very fond of moisture and prefers a slightly acidic soil. For mulching, sawdust or peat is best suited. After acidifying the earth, the hydrangea becomes pinkish. You can achieve a blue color: to do this, once a week, water the plant with a solution of aluminum or iron salts.

In 2012, I bought a rather expensive stalk of a panic hydrangea in a private nursery, Shikoku Flush. As it was withered in the catalog, this is a novelty. Leaves in her should be with cream-yellow spots and crabs all over the surface. I had great hopes for this hydrangea, I was expecting an extraordinary beauty.
A big bush with a height of 1,2 m grew from the cuttings, there is a splash on the leaves, but there was never a flower brush. I called the nursery to find out what the matter was, and I was told that this species really blooms very badly, but it has an elegant leaf.
I want to know: how to make this hydrangea bloom or should I remove it from the site?

You were informed correctly: the panicle hydrangea is valued for the mottled color of the leaves. Although this plant should also blossom, the inflorescence is not as decorative as the hydrangeas that are habitual for us.
For flowering this kind of hydrangeas, by the way, is not very abundant, it is necessary to feed it regularly and watch for a sufficient amount of moisture. In addition, it should be remembered that the panicle hydrangea Shikoku Flush blooms on the shoots of the current year, and if pruned in early spring, it will not bloom.
Top dressing should be regular, you've already made sure that the shrub grows fast enough, so 8 needs a lot of nutrients. At the beginning of the growing season, make a green fertilizer, for this young nettle (at the rate of one part of nettle on 10 parts of water) is suitable. For one hydrangea with a height of 2 m, one bucket of green fertilizer is used, followed by a spill of water. Every two weeks an infusion of overgrown Mullein is also introduced. In the period of budding, a complex mineral fertilizer is introduced.
In addition, it should be remembered that hydrangeas like acid soil, and deviations in the alkaline or neutral side have a bad effect on growth and flowering.
If all the above recommendations do not help to achieve flowering, do not rush to get rid of your hydrangeas, because such decorative leaves you will not find in any other plant, and it can be successfully combined with such brightly flowering plants as a lilac or a large turf.
