Do not laurel laurels! Planting photos and care ..
Noble fragrant laurel is often confused with laurel medicinal. Indeed, they are similar in form to leaves and shrubs, but they are completely different plants.
Please do not confuse
Lavrovišnja is widespread in Asia Minor and Transcaucasia, it is less whimsical than laurels. Therefore, traders in southern resorts sometimes deceive tourists, selling instead of laurel laurels medicinal laurel. But it's easy to check. Pound one leaf between your fingers, and if you do not feel the familiar aroma of spice, then in your hands you definitely do not have a laurel.

On the culture of laurel cherries
Bushes and trees of laurel cherries grow up to 8 m. The plant is easily rooted by cuttings and quickly grows from seeds. In late April and early May, the bush is covered with fragrant inflorescences-tassels up to 12 cm long. The flowers in them are small, creamy with orange centers. The leaves are large - up to 15-20 cm in length.
They can not be added to dishes, because they contain poison - hydrocyanic acid. Medicines are made from the leaves of laurel cherries in an industrial way (therefore, its name is appropriate), they are used in distillery production. However, at home, experimenting with a plant is not worth it.
Fruiting of laurel cherry
In late July-early August, red fruits ripen, which gradually become dark purple or even black. They look like cherries, up to 1,5 cm in diameter. Inside-rounded bones, also containing hydrocyanic acid. But there are no poisonous substances in the pulp, and it is quite edible.
Most often, sweet-fruit varieties are cultivated, but there are trees with bitter fruits. It tastes "sweet" sugary with almond notes.
In their fresh form, they are practically not eaten, but are often used for making compotes, jams, syrups and wines, previously separated from the bones. Also, the dried fruits of laurel cherries are well preserved almost all winter.
Growing of laurel cherry in the middle lane
Since laurel cherry is a heat-loving culture (it does not tolerate frost below -18 °), it is very rarely grown in open ground in Central Russia. Basically, the plant is kept in greenhouses, on glazed balconies, in rooms. In summer, a potted tree can be planted in the garden under the crowns of trees.
They plant laurels with seeds, cuttings, root siblings or layers.
For a garden, it is best to purchase a plant above 70. See nurseries, brought from Europe, in nurseries. They are more frost-resistant than southern plants, but in open ground in our harsh winters need a good shelter.
Reproduction of laurel cherry
Buy seeds collected this year, because they have a short period of germination. Bones soak in warm water for a day, then plant the seeds in a container with moist soil, deepening on 1, see.
Cover the seeding with foil and place in the refrigerator for 2-3 months. Then transfer the container to the room and germinate the seeds at a temperature of 18-28 °.
If one of your friends already has a laurel cherry, then you can ask them for cuttings. Divide the shoots into segments of 10-12 cm. Leave only the upper leaves, shortened to half, and remove the rest. Insert the cuttings 2-3 cm into the mixture of humus and sand, pour and cover with a transparent bag. Root at 22-24 °.

Lavrovishnia: care
Mix the soil for laurel cherries from turf, garden soil, humus, sand and ash (2: 2: 4: 2: 1). In the summer, fertilize once a month with complex fertilizing. During the first 5 years, transplant the plant annually into a larger pot, and then it is enough to “relocate” it every 3-4 years. Form a bush up to 1,5 m high. Cut at the end of summer. Pests of laurels rarely hit.
Water the crop sparingly. In winter, 2-3 times a month will be enough. Put the plant in a cool place with a temperature of about 5 °. With good care, laurel seedlings begin to bloom profusely and bear fruit after about 4 years.

When I was resting in the south, I heard two passers-by arguing about the name of a pretty tree, which grew next to someone's summer residence. One said that this is a laurel, since the leaves of it are very similar to laurels.
The second claimed that it was a fruit tree. Then the owner of the dacha came out and said that both were wrong - this was laurel cherry.
The second time I heard about a strange tree, when friends brought me a small pot in a pot. It was laurels. I had to learn more about the plant.
It turned out that there are many varieties of laurel cherries. Only in the south they are evergreen trees, and in the cooler regions these are deciduous plants. They can not withstand temperatures below -25 °. So I did not dare to land laurel cherry on the plot, but transplanted it into a more spacious pot and left it in the winter garden.
Since the plant is poisonous, I grow a bush as a decorative culture.
And my tree fructifies, but I do not risk eating berries, although I heard that they are edible in a mature form. In general, very useful in this plant are the leaves-they are used in folk medicine for problems with the lungs and the heart.
