GROWING POTATOES IN THE MOSCOW REGION - TIPS
How to grow potatoes alternating with siderates
I decided to share my thoughts on growing potatoes. Why do I want to talk about her? Yes, because this culture, from my point of view, a very capricious lady: you do not know when and what trick will throw.
The first experience I received as a child under the guidance of my mother. And independently began to be engaged in second bread from summer 1991 of year when took a country site. Since 1993 year I plant potatoes in grooves in a staggered order, through 20 cm in each row. It's pretty common, but good.
I have two plots of 3 × 10 m in size allotted for potatoes. I plant them alternately: siderata year - year potato.
At each site I do three rows (see diagram). A decent distance between the grooves (90 cm) allows you to make a convenient passage 40 cm wide after earthing up - it’s easy to mulch the plantings later and inspect the growing bushes.

Top dressing in the holes with potatoes
Before each planting, I pour “seasoning” into each groove in the following order: a little chicken droppings, ash, sand, mix everything, then there is humus with overripe sawdust, and then I lay the tubers sprouts down. I fall asleep on top with a small layer of hay (of course, it would be better to have straw, but it can’t be found in the district). I fill the grooves with loose soil. If the weather is dry, water it with water.
Hilling the potatoes
I grow up growing potatoes like this: three times with the head, and the fourth - at the very top.
I do this only with a shovel (I do not use the chopper). I think that in this case, when hilling the bushes, they move apart better, that the potatoes are only beneficial.
After the last such procedure, the ridges are mulched with dried grass, and if still left, then with hay. Of course, all this takes time and effort, but the site is small, and so far I am managing. Next is the usual care, but I do everything, including top dressing, on time. In any case, I try.

Potato Care - As You Can
With the onset of the heat generously I feed water directly into the aisles, where I lay plastic tubes with holes on each mulch every 15 cm connected to the water supply. After such watering, potato plantations are similar to rice plantations, but since the soil is loose, all water quickly goes into the depths.
If the bug was established for a long time, I set the arches above the potato rows and lay the covering material on them. Troubled? Yes, but it helps to save the harvest.
On average, I collect from the site 270-280 kg (there were a couple of times and 290). Of course, when you recalculate, you get less than 40 kilo from the bush, but it suits me.
For 20 with more than a few years of work in the garden I tried quite a few ways of growing second bread: square-nest, under hay, in barrels, in buckets, in pits, under cardboard, on the surface, under turf. In general, it turned out not bad, but, as the inhabitants of Odessa say, to say that ah - no. Therefore, in the end, I settled on the grooves, which I have already talked about, with less similar results.
And only in 2013 the goblin pulled my leg, and I planted two rows on the main site in the manner described by Vladimir K. from the Kiev region in the magazine "Beautiful Dacha". He did everything as the author suggested. But, unfortunately, in the summer long rains passed, and almost all the potatoes rotted without rising. However, I guess I’m wrong to sin on that method, because many of my neighbors who grew potatoes as usual, without any fancy, had a similar picture. In general, however, the trick failed. But I was once again convinced that weather conditions very seriously affect both the quality and the number of tubers grown.
And most importantly: excitement awoke in me. Last spring, the experiments continued. In three containers (60 cm in diameter and 75 cm high) planted one tuber. In two, growing according to the "Dutch" method, in the third - as in an ordinary garden bed. The result was approximately the same, average. But on the other hand, I dug potatoes from these containers a month later than the one on the site. Maybe the one who grows potatoes in barrels knows what treasured word, eh? Everything can be ... But I spent the energy on dragging the humus into these tanks a lot. By the way, Vladimir K. promised to report on the results of his “Dutch” method, but so far something of his report has been imperceptible. Maybe I missed the publication, but I seem to read everything from cover to cover.
And yet, despite the setbacks, I continue to experiment, but to the best of my ability. To me after all already for 80, and it all the same decently, to a jump any more that. My wife helps as much as she can. Work is necessary (in spite of some adaptations that facilitate garden work) much more than three hours a week.
Who says that digs in the beds less, probably, cunning. Yes, in the end, it does not matter how many hours the gardener works. Everyone does as much as he likes.
The main thing is that labor should be in the best of strength and bring satisfaction. Well, if you also collect something in the end, it will turn into your own bins, it's quite cool!

GROWING POTATOES IN THE MOSCOW REGION - PLANTING AND CARE, TIPS AND FEEDBACKS ABOUT VARIETIES
POTATO IN MOSCOW REGION: ALL CARE - ONE IRRIGATION
In recent years, I grow more than 15 potato varieties on my site in the northern suburbs, including Zhukovsky early, Luck, Snegir, Nevsky, Ilyinsky, Svitanok Kiev, Red Scarlett, and others.
But today I would like to share with the readers the results of growing varieties that are least susceptible to all sorts of diseases and very popular among modern summer residents. This is Tuleyevsky, Sonok, Zhukov's Jubilee and Chugunka. They, it is possible to say, have passed national selection and are distinguished by high productivity and good lezhchkost.
I take out the tubers from the basement for vernalization 40 days before planting. Twice a week I spray it with infusion of ash, once a week - with a growth regulator. I plant only when the soil warms up to 10 °, usually on May 8-12. I determine the planting period, like everyone else, by a birch: I am waiting for the appearance of leaves the size of a penny coin. I make landing in ridges-boxes. I have been preparing the earth since the fall by introducing organic matter (compost, humus) and sand.
For planting I use whole germinated tubers. I put them in holes deep 15 cm together with ash, onion and garlic husks, citrus peel sprouts down, which contributes to high yields without hilling.
I pour the tubers on the ground with a layer of 3-5 cm and cover the top with mown grass, weeds, last year's siderates. The landing is done in staggered order with a pitch of 30-35,
If the planting stock of the tested varieties is small, I plant the sprouts that have been broken from the tubers. Before planting, I stand them in a solution of heteroauxin.
But you need to plant the same day, when the sprout is broken. The depth of the wells in this case is 8-70, see. Moreover, the tubers themselves after breaking the sprouts are also suitable for planting.
As soon as the stems grow 10-15 cm, I level the ground in the holes. In the future I do not spend any hilling, cultivating, applying mineral fertilizers, chemical treatments - nothing. Only watering twice a month with "green fertilizer", which is prepared in a barrel according to known technology.
If the tops are fat, you can add 3 kg of superphosphate and 1 kg of potassium sulfate per 100 square meters. m. But I usually get by with ash - half a glass per bush. By the way, this increases the yield and improves the taste of potatoes. A week before harvesting, cut the tops.
All four varieties are resistant to scab, late blight, nematode, the effects of weather changes. By the maturity date, they can be attributed to the mid-term (70-90 days), which allows to avoid late blight and at the same time have a rind fully ripe for long-term storage. The tubers of these varieties are tasty in boiled, fried, baked form.
And now about the revealed peculiarities of these varieties.
My choice of varieties for the Moscow region
Early and high-yielding variety. Gives 15-20 and more even tubers from the bush. They weigh 250-350 g, and often 600 g or more. The pulp and peel are yellow, blooms with white flowers. The bushes are large, so the maximum yield from the bush can be obtained when planting according to the scheme 70 × 40 cm. Tubers are compact. It can do without watering. But keep in mind that with a lack of boron voids in tubers can occur. Therefore, in the "green fertilizer" is to add boric acid. The tubers taste great, crumbly and are great for mashed potatoes.
Son
Very yielding variety, up to 25 tubers from the bush. Weight 350-500 g, pleasant taste Peel may have a faint crimson hue, the pulp is white. The maturation period is somewhat longer than the other varieties (80-100 days). A valuable property, like that of Tuleyevsky, is the preservation of varietal properties during long-term cultivation in one place. Does not require hilling.
Jubilee of Zhukov
The tubers are oval, creamy peel, white flesh. The variety is high-yielding, speedy. Interestingly, tubers of this variety are resistant to mechanical damage. Another valuable feature is the ability to land at low temperatures. The tubers are resistant to late blight and potato cancer, are well stored.
Cast iron
Dark purple tubers with light flesh, medium size. Of all the listed varieties, the least depends on the amount of organic matter introduced. It is believed that the plants of this ancient variety are not attacked by the Colorado potato beetle and bear. Eating tubers in food helps to normalize blood pressure.
Virtually does not germinate when stored. True, the taste, in my opinion, is mediocre.
Cultivation of potatoes according to the described technology allows to receive high yields with low labor costs and practically without chemistry. If you have any questions, please call.

POTATOES IN THE MOSCOW REGION: THE MAIN THING IS A GOOD COMPANY
Perhaps growing potatoes in a greenhouse may seem like a strange and unjustified decision to many, but it makes you think about a lot.
I CAN BRAND SUCCESS.
Several years ago, I had to urgently look for seed potatoes, since my own was very unimportant, although the varieties themselves are not bad - Luck, Nevsky, Zhukovsky early and Resource. As a result, I bought 12 new products on the market: Kursk rose, Ivan da Marya, Charodey, Vi-neta, Scarlet, Snow White, Velina, Rosara, Meteor (early ripening), purple (for diabetics), Nikulinsky and some other unknown variety with yellow pulp, originally from Yaroslavl. Well, of course, she planted all this wealth.
And to my joy, everyone gave a good harvest. It is curious that the beetle did not particularly covet plants, moreover, when planting, it did not process potatoes with anything. In general, I was pleased with the result, because even my Resource distinguished himself, although before that he did not show himself in anything special (apparently, he tried for the company). But most of all I was pleased with the same unknown "Yaroslavets": from five planted potatoes I dug almost a bucket of large tubers. There were no trifles among them - I didn't even know which ones to leave for seeds (I prefer to select medium-sized tubers for this).
TWO POTTLES
The next year I decided to do an experiment. Dividing the garden into two parts, one of them plowed in the spring and prepared only for potatoes, and the second was processed with a flat cutter in May, then she trampled grooves on the plot, put cardboard in them along with grass and planted there, in addition to potatoes, onions and carrots (I I used to plant a couple on the same bed before). When the potatoes came up - and I planted them, by the way, in a checkerboard pattern - I sprinkled the sprouts and then covered them with grass cut by a trimmer. As a result, I did not weed these landings and did not fight with a beetle and a wireworm.
On the same site, I also planted sprouts potatoes. In March, she broke off the strongest shoots from the tubers and planted them in a container filled with earth. They got up well, began to gain strength. And some of them were planted in a greenhouse in April. In May, I transplanted all of them to a permanent place on the plot, well mulched.
At the end of May, this potato had already bloomed, and a month later I had already started digging it up.
On average, each nest had two palm-sized tubers, although there was a trifle. Much better results were shown by potatoes grown from sprouts that had been growing in a greenhouse for some time.
I must also note that I really liked working with a flat cutter, especially with its help: you keep your back straight, you work without straining, and the grooves turn out to be high. But working as a hoe is not at all the same.
On the very first plot, where the potatoes were grown in the usual way, it was necessary to apply chemistry against both the grass and the wireworm beetle. True, the tops were also powerful, meter high. For the sake of experiment, I treated one bush with red pepper, but did not calculate the dose and burned the leaves. And the beetle crawled on this pepper further.
POTATO ON WALP
But the experiments were not over at all! The son-in-law decided to make his own garden: behind the garden he fenced off virgin soil, made holes, put a tuber in each (he used only one and a half buckets), covered it all with a dugout, and on top with hay, and said that no one should touch this plot until autumn. It seems that everything was done according to the advice from "Dacha", but the son-in-law made the landing on April 12, when the ground was still cold. And as a result, time passes, but there are no shoots. Two weeks later, I dug half of these holes and saw that some of the potatoes were simply frozen.
I added ash to the holes and sprinkled it with earth again. Only then did the potatoes rise. And where I did not touch anything, the sprouts did not appear. Two months later, they began to dig everything up, and there in the holes there were three to five tubers, and the largest of them turned out to be the size of a walnut. There were, however, and larger ones, but by that time they were all spoiled by the wireworm.
It was necessary to warm up the earth under the film for two to three weeks, and add organic matter to the holes. And then it was also necessary to throw up the hay, because it settles.
But in the same summer, I also went wild with virgin soil. I dug a large hole in the untouched ground and put in there a potato cut into pieces with excellent sprouts. I covered it with fertile soil, watered it, but as a result, I dug up two handfuls of nodules. What to do with them? Well, the neighbor took the seeds.
I will return again to the characteristics of some varieties. Over time, my resource "sold out" even more, and last season I collected on average 15 pieces from each planted tuber, and the most productive bush brought as many as 30. Almost a bucket! But the Vi-neta variety disappointed with its “small-caliber” crop, although I also left its tubers for seeds. And it’s good that I didn’t give it up - then I found out that it is distinguished by its drought resistance, and in our area the last years were very rainy.

Do not rush to clean potatoes: let it continue to gain strength
The potato field occupies us about 4 acres, but the harvest is enough to provide 2 families at once for the long winter. We grow varieties of different maturation periods, from early to mid-late. Young potatoes are excavated from the beginning of July, and the late harvest is perfectly preserved throughout the winter.
Potatoes are important not only to grow, but also to preserve. And safety is largely ensured by proper cleaning. Usually we start to dig out tubers in the beginning or the middle of September, depending on weather and a condition of plants. If the tops are still green, and the weather is warm, then do not rush, let the potatoes continue to gain strength.
We dig out the potatoes manually, forging the bush with pitchforks. It is more convenient to do this together: one digs up, the other pulls the bush over the tops. It is very important to choose the warm days for the dump. Then the potatoes will have a dense peel, and dry roots are much easier to remove from the earth. But if the forecast promises to rain for weeks to come, then you need to ensure the possibility of drying. To do this, we release the barn, we cover the floor with sacking, and in the daytime we open the doors so that there is a draft for ventilation.
After sorting the harvest. Potatoes intended for seeds, we leave in the sun for gardening, the rest will go to food. After 1-2 weeks, after thorough drying, we sort once more. We remove all tubers with injuries and signs of diseases. After the bulkhead we scatter on wooden boxes and send to storage in the basement.
