Cultivation of cabbage in the Moscow region - secrets and advice

How I grow cabbage in the suburbs
Although I have a considerable experience as an amateur gardener (after all, I have been cultivating the land since 1976), I always find something new and useful for myself and try to apply it on my site. That's what an amazing thing it is to delve into the garden. And with particular enthusiasm, I took up this when I went on a well-deserved rest: it seems that I don’t need to go to work anymore, but my free time became even less. But I am only glad of such a turn.
And so I decided to share my experience with readers. Maybe someone will find something useful for themselves. My dacha is in the north-east of the Moscow region, on the river bank. The land is sandy.
The site was in the lowlands, and we covered it with sand on 1 m, at least somehow be on par with the neighbors. And now it's been many years, and I'm still driving the soil, I'm pouring it. But this is a separate conversation. In this letter I want to talk about how I grow an excellent cauliflower on such a land.

Bed for cabbage
Rye for seedlings I prepare from autumn.
Under the digging I make 8-10 l manure or humus and 1 handful of superphosphate at the rate of 1 sq. M. m. But I do not use ash at this time. I think it's pointless to put it, because it will be washed in the spring by thawed water. Then I dig and immediately put the high arcs in order not to bother with them later (in winter they will not go anywhere, on the contrary, they will settle down even better). After 10 March I come to the country house and clean the prepared bed.
And just then the ash is useful: if it is sprinkled with snow, it will melt faster. On the arc I throw a plastic wrap, fix it with bricks and wait 2 weeks. The weather at this time is different, but in 2 weeks, in any case, the ground under the film thaws at least 5 cm, checked by years.
This is exactly what I need.
Planting cabbage
I come, take off the film, level the ground and form a garden. I make transverse grooves with a depth of 3 cm, compact them with my palm and sprinkle well with ashes through a sieve. In the grooves I spread the seeds of cabbage at a distance of 1,5-2 cm from each other.
I fall asleep with a layer of earth about 1 cm thick, lightly compacting my palm and again sprinkling with ashes. If I plant several varieties of cabbage, then at the beginning of each groove put a marker with the number of the variety (and their name under the corresponding number I write down in the notebook).
When all the seeds are sown, I fill the bed with snow for 20-30 cm, cover it with a film, fix it and do not open it until the snow cover completely around in the garden.
Usually it happens in early April, and by this time the cabbage is already beginning to rise. I loosen between the rows and change the polyethylene film to the covering material (I take the one that is thicker), since in the bright spring sun under the polyethylene shoots can burn. Seedlings are not watered, because the moisture in the land is still enough, do not dive, do not thin and do not feed. In the last days of April, I start planting cabbage to a permanent place.

I add whitewash to the holes with the cabbage ....
By this time, the seedlings are already, as a rule, strong, with 3-4 leaves. I plant cabbage on a bed in 2 rows in a checkerboard pattern. The distance in the row between the plants is 30-40 cm, and between the rows itself - 40-50 cm. I dig holes in the depth of 20 cm and put 1 liter of decayed manure, a pinch of superphosphate, a glass of ash and always a good handful of ordinary dry whitewash into each luggage.
Important: it should not contain additives in the form of glue and similar binders.
Why is it needed? And from the keel. Earlier, when I did not use whitewash, I constantly lost part of the crop because of this disease. And now I forgot what it is. By the way, this method was recommended to me by one of my good acquaintances, who assured me that in their regions {she from another region) they acted like this from time immemorial. So it or not, there is nothing to argue about, but it helps. But back to the holes. After filling, mix well their contents and pour in each 5 l of warm water. Then I plant the seedlings, slightly compacting the earth around, and watering again. Around each bush I scatter the eggshell, which is not very large crumbled, and again I pour the entire earth with a layer of 2-3. The egg shell scares the bear well, and we have enough of it near the river. Under the ground, she walks shallowly, and stumbling on sharp shells, immediately leaves. It works for me.
Then I put it over the landing of the arc and cover it with thin covering material - this is how seedlings take root better, moisture is better retained, less harmful are pests. After about a week, I check the planting, if necessary, weed, water and loosen, and then cover again. I remove the covering material when the cabbage starts to rest against it. This usually happens before the beginning of the formation of inflorescences. I feed cabbage 2-3 times per season with diluted mullein, as well as infusion of herbs and a solution of ash. I do it after watering in the evening.

The place of planting cabbage is changed every year, returning to the old one not earlier than in 3 year.
I start harvesting from the 3-th decade of June. Varieties and hybrids have experienced a lot, both domestic and foreign, but I give preference to the grade Goodman. At me it turns out simply fairy and pleases every year, irrespective of weather, excellent heads. The harvest is enough for two families and still remains friends and acquaintances.

Strong cabbages and two discrepancies
Last year, in the article "Lady in the Mud" I talked about sowing seedlings, planting in the ground and growing cabbage in early summer. But it turned out that all the measures taken were not enough to get clean and strong heads of cabbage. So I will share another portion of the adventure.
The weather presented surprises all summer, in connection with this and agrotechnical techniques had to be changed. During the torrential rains I grabbed all the mulch from the garden so that on rare occasions the earth dries. The cabbage, of course, is known for water, but such excess moisture, in rather cold weather, could lead to decay of the roots.
But later the whole cabbage beds I fell asleep with pounded eggshell to fight plant slugs and small snails. With this muck in such quantities I have not met yet! The site is quite dry, blown by all the winds, so these pests only occasionally visited us. And here I found them practically on all plants, even on rough leaves of cucumbers and pumpkins.
But did the shell help? Not really. I had to resort to a proven method: I caught them with the help of old boards spread out along the beds, where they assembled, and then manually collected them and gave them to the chickens.
That's who was delighted with the invasion of slugs and snails! The hens gladly ate the collected trophies, because this is pure protein.
In the second half of July, the rains stopped, and the heat came. I did not mulch the beds again, because the cabbage had grown by that time, and the leaves of the neighboring plants closed. But then a new misfortune appeared: cabbage. Regular spraying with acetic water alternated with dusting ash, but the butterflies did not care. What was quite understandable: summer exceeded half, and they were in a hurry to breed. But I also need a clean cabbage!
Not up to principles ...
I had to take extreme measures: my husband sprayed on the cage with insecticide, diluted in water strictly according to the instructions. Well, what should I do? Tear out the cabbage with a corroded core and send it to the trash? This prospect did not suit me.
Otherwise, nursing was normal. Soon after the rains stopped, Sergey resumed regular watering of leaves with cold water from the well to avoid cracking the heads of cabbage, and I fertilized it with chicken droppings once. She didn’t start using ash to replenish potassium washed by rains: in theory, two dusting with ash, used in the fight against cabbage, had to restore balance.
Entering it in large quantities can provoke the accumulation of nitrates in cabbages.
Thanks to the measures taken, we got a good harvest (albeit with a delay of almost a month). And red-red Jewel F1, and early white June and Flash were pleased with their size, and the middle-aged Slava did not have enough warm days to grow. But the quality of all the heads was excellent. I note only two discrepancies.
Usually cabbage I cut off selectively, as I ripen, leaving a stump in the ground to get an additional crop. Usually, they had time to grow three or five little kochanchikov weighing about a half a kilo, and last summer they did not even get involved.
And I missed the early broccoli Green Magic F1, although the heads began to tie in the first warm days and soon reached the diameter of 5-8. See, of course, I regularly examined them and waited for them to get the promised weight (0,7-0,9 kg). But did not take into account the previous long cold period. But cabbage took it into account and, having not had time to type the right mass, hurried to give offspring: one morning I discovered that she threw out the color. We got only small heads that grew later from the sinuses of the leaves.
Since I grow mainly early ripe varieties, in order to extend the period of their consumption in June, I planted several roots of the Flash. They did not give a full crop, having tied only medium-sized heads. I marinated them: cut into several parts, grated carrots on a coarse grater. At the bottom of the can, I put peppers, garlic, put cabbage with carrots and poured with cooled brine (boil a liter of water with 0,5 cups of sugar, 2 tbsp. Salt, 3 tbsp. Vegetable oil and 1 tbsp. Vinegar essence - 70%).
Out of the same green leaves removed from the head, I advise everyone to cook a little for a cabbage soup. We must finely chop them and crumble with a little salt. Then put it in a container under oppression and let the leaves sour at room temperature, periodically piercing to release bitterness. When the crochet is ready (after three or four days), in small portions folded into the freezer, and then add instead of cabbage when preparing the cabbage soup.
Slugs and Butterfly-Belyans with special zeal attacked white cabbage, but red-headed and broccoli got much less from them.

Moscow lady cabbage
The same vegetable is given to different summer residents in different ways. But for that there is a summer residence to ease the difficulties for those who have them. For example, with cabbage, it turns out, the situation is not so complicated.
I have 19 acres in the village, six of them are occupied by garden and flowers, there are two more polycarbonate greenhouses and a considerable garden. Now I already have the opportunity to live in the village permanently. And the article of G.I. pushed me to the letter Schekaleva "Lady with a difficult character."
Dear Galina Ivanovna, wrote about the difficulties of growing cabbage and, in my opinion, over-thickened the colors. What for? Beginners, after reading the article, may even refuse to grow this wonderful vegetable. But cabbage is so tasty and healthy! So many dishes from it can be prepared, in addition, it is a storehouse of vitamins and nutrients.
I believe that cabbage is no harder to grow than any other vegetable. After all, we are not afraid of difficulties along the way. I grow it for a long time and very successfully. There are, of course, nuances and features, but all this is completely solvable.
Cabbage loves light, moisture and loose soil.
Everyone knows this, but then - my secrets.
Light and heat
Let's start with seedlings. I select the largest seeds in the purchase packages of different varieties. I soak them in a growth stimulator according to the instructions, and by the end of the third day the seeds hatch. Then on a favorable lunar day (I count in advance) I plant the seed in plastic cups on 2-3, abundantly water it and cover it with plastic wrap.
It is advisable to take color glasses to protect the roots.
I put them on a pallet, fill the soil long before planting, when there is a lot of free time. I prepare the soil myself from turf land, sand and purchased soil, add a little ash.
Shoots appear on the 2-4 day, and I immediately transfer them to the greenhouse. Since this happens at the end of the first decade of April, there is already a lot of light in it, and the temperature regime is suitable. At night I cover the seedlings with non-woven material. Under such conditions, it grows strong, healthy, does not stretch. In the second half of May I transplant into the ground. It is very easy to get sprouts by simply turning the cup down. The roots are not damaged, the survival rate is 100%. I have never seen withered bushes! I make deep holes so that, as the cabbage grows, add nutrient soil to them. In each treasure, a handful of humus, ash and dolomite flour to protect against keel. Between the bushes I sow marigolds (photo 1).
Shreds instead of butterflies
Over landings husband builds a simple structure
(photo 2). It is easy to assemble and easy to carry, so we plant cabbage every year in a new place. Then we stretch non-woven covering material No. 30 onto this structure so that there is no open space left. The covering material protects the cabbage from all kinds of pests, retains moisture and loose soil. If it is dry, hot weather, we water the area directly on the covering material. Remove it when the cabbage itself starts to lift it. By this time, it already becomes invulnerable to pests and diseases: they simply do not sit on healthy strong bushes.
For safety, I tie white shreds on the supporting threads (3 photo), and butterflies fly by. Three times a season I feed herbal infusion and sprinkle ash under the roots.
For cauliflower I use mineral fertilizer with trace elements, especially it needs molybdenum. I do this only once before heading out, the result pleases every year. Dry coffee grounds help well from slugs: I roll in handfuls under the root when the heads of cabbage have already begun. After rains and watering, repeat the procedure 2-3 times. I never have slugs on the cabbage. .
I usually grow heads of cabbage-40, and this is enough for a family of four before a new crop. I freeze cauliflower and broccoli. Cabbage is well kept since we have a cellar.
I wrote, maybe chaotically, on emotions, but I really want all gardeners not to be afraid of anything and grow any kind of cabbage. Eyes are afraid, but hands do! It works out well for me.

In order to maintain the crop rotation, I always change the vegetables in places, and last season, white cabbage got 2 beds along the high fence of the corrugated board. There, of course, the sun almost does not fall, but I decided to take a chance.
Poured cabbage, loosened, fed, processed from pests and diseases, but all my efforts went to rub. Kochanchiki in the shade grew small, friable. We remained without harvest. And all because cabbage, as I found out later, needs 18 hours of sun.
So now I will not put her in the shade for anything. It's better for last year's, but a sunny garden. And in order to observe the crop rotation, I plant a cold-resistant siderate (rape, oats, phacelia, rye) in the spring.

When I read in the newspaper about how you can save cabbage from different insects with valerian. Last year I tested this method on my site. Result pleased, I advise you.
It is necessary to pour warm water to the top into a three-liter jar, pour a vial of valerian (40 ml) into it - they are sold in a pharmacy. Also add the grated laundry soap so that the solution sticks better to the cabbage leaves, a small piece is enough. Stir well and pour this solution into a 10 liter bucket of water. And then just sprinkle the cabbage with a broom.

Fragile top dressing
When I got a job in a confectioner's shop, I noticed that egg shells were being thrown out in huge quantities. But this is a valuable fertilizer! I began to take her home, then to use for fertilizing plants.
I thoroughly rinse the stored shells, dry them and grind them in a coffee grinder (you can also wrap up several sheets of paper and beat them well with a wooden pestle). I store the resulting powder in a dry place. I add it to the holes when sowing seeds or planting seedlings - about 0,5 tsp. Potatoes, cabbage and eggplants are especially responsive to such feeding.
To get an even more effective fertilizer, I fall asleep powder to the fire. Then a mixture of wood ash and baked powder is embedded in the ground near the plantings.
I also make liquid fertilizing from the shell. In 1 l water I put 6-7 crushed shells and wait for the liquid to become cloudy and get a characteristic smell. Usually this takes 10-12 days. Ready fertilizing dilute 3 l of water and pour the solution of the plant under the root.
