Carrots on high beds

For us in the Urals for a long time, all truck farmers grow vegetables on high beds: they warm up more quickly in the spring, and they are easier to take care of.

I have a garden with a height of 40 cm and a width of 1 m in the garden. Passages between the ridges (50-60 cm) we fall asleep with sawdust, and if the grass breaks through them, we simply cut it with a flat cutter and leave it in sawdust.

Carrots love loose soil, so we can dig up a garden spoon on the spade bayonet and level it with rakes.

The husband cut strips of 15 cm wide and the width of the beds from black roofing material, and for fastening them to the ground he made studs of thick wire in the form of the letter P, the upper part of which is equal to the width of the strip - 15 cm.

We spread these strips across the beds, leaving between them in 10 cm, and fix on both sides of the studs, so as not to blown away by the wind. Then, with an edge of a specially made board for this purpose, we make grooves, pressing on the board simultaneously from two sides.

Obtained deep grooved grooves, I spill them abundantly with water from a watering can without strainer. Humic fertilizers can be added to the water, but I do without them.

It is most convenient to use drained seeds: they can be spread evenly on the furrow, then thinning is minimal.

But the germination of these seeds in recent years is simply disgusting, and I returned to the ancient method of presowing treatment. I poured a packet of seeds into a linen cloth and tied a string with twine.

One end of the twine is left long and I tie a bundle of seeds to it, so as not to confuse the variety, since I get several such knots. Two weeks before planting, and this is the end of April, I dig in nodules with seeds to the ground to a depth of about 30 cm, leaving the end of the twine with the sachet attached to it, and pulling it out of the ground when grooves are already ready.

The seeds are swollen, saturated with life-giving moisture and the strength of the earth, they do not need to be dried, but must be immediately put into grooves.

Take the time and lay them out neatly and not densely - in the future there will be less trouble.

I fall asleep a groove with a loose earth mixture, into which I add humus, peat and vermiculite. I do it with my hands: I level it, I slam it and cover it with a plastic wrap before emergence.

In this way, you can process any seeds: parsley, parsnip and other hard-like ones - it is not for nothing that nature impregnated them with oil! It is also necessary for plants, and there is no need to soak them in vodka.

There is very little weeding on this carrot bed, in addition, the soil under the roofing material warms up well and does not dry out.

When watering, you can pour water from the hose into strips, it will drain just under the roots of carrots, and the tops will not lie. The strips can be removed when the tops come together, pulling out the hairpins and stretching the strips. These strips and hairpins are used many times, several years.

The photo shows a bed with carrots in late May, before thinning. And I thin out the carrots twice, and the second time the “tails” are already good for food.

Almost every year I get a good harvest of carrots, strictly observing its agricultural technology. Under the previous culture (cucumbers, zucchini, early cabbage, tomatoes) must make a compost or humus.
In autumn, after harvesting the predecessor, the bed is digested, fertilized with superphosphate and potassium chloride (respectively 60 and 40 g per 1 sq. M). In spring, in April-May, I destroy the emerging weeds. At the end of May, I patch the garden bed with garden forks to a depth of 20-25 cm, having previously scattered 60 g on 1 sq. m of complex mineral fertilizer (Kemira or nitrophoska), make grooves and in early June sow the carrots of the Samson hybrid inlaid seeds, placing each seed at a distance of 2 cm from each other. Someone can reproach me for sowing carrots very late, and will be wrong.

For early consumption, carrots can be planted earlier, but for storage there is an advantage over later sowing. learned that hybrid carrots are better stored than varietal. That's why I stopped at the Samson hybrid.
If necessary, in the phase of two real leaves, carrots break through. I pick up the torn plants in a bucket and put them in compost without scattering them in the garden so as not to attract the carrot fly. In the subsequent bed I mulch, I do not feed carrots, since all fertilizers were introduced earlier. I carefully monitor that the carrot heads are covered with earth. Those that bulge out of the ground, sprinkle with mulch or just the ground. A greened head is already a marriage.

To repel pests in vegetable crops, I use an onion peel infusion. To do this, a handful of husks, 1 liter ash can is poured in boiling water in a bucket, I insist 1 a day, then I pump 1 l in an 5-liter watering can and water the plants, including carrots. I did not have a carrot fly yet, all root crops are even, weighting 200-350 g each, without damage.

A week before the first thinning of carrots I spray clean kerosene between its rows of sprayer. The grass turns black and the carrot is alive and well. After a few days, the weeds completely dry up and then grow very poorly, they can easily be weeded by hand. But keep in mind that in the garden, only carrots should grow; other vegetables may not like kerosene.

Many people think that if you do not water the carrots, it will not turn out to be large and juicy. It's not like that at all. I grow carrots completely without watering, the size of the root crop, like its taste qualities, quite suit me.
Before sowing, I pour the seeds into a linen bag and bury it in the garden in the spring after the snow falls to a depth of 25-30, see. After 1,5 weeks, I take out the seeds. They swell in the earth, they become large, ready to be pierced. Then I pour them starch, so they do not stick together, and I spread them into grooves in the bed with an interval of 5-7 cm, sprinkle with peat. Through 3-5 days, shoots are shown. In the future caring for carrots is only in the weeding and loosening of rows. If the summer is dry, then you can swamp the garden with compost or weeds from the garden. But refrain from watering. Roots in search of moisture themselves will drag inland and grow even, long. At least in our region this way of growing up has justified itself.
