The garden itself - errors in planning and planting

A mistake in planting and caring for the garden
They say that life is the sum of the mistakes made.
Perhaps the life of a gardener is no exception to this rule. How many things were planted in the wrong and wrong places! How much money was buried in the ground, how many disappointments had to endure ... but we still continue to step on the same rake ...

The Garden for Growth
Let's start with the most important thing - with site planning. Errors at the initial stage of development of virgin lands are subsequently expensive for the gardener - redevelopment requires tremendous effort and labor.
Therefore, priority setting is important here. Whether your garden will be decorative or food - its content depends on it. To break vegetable and strawberry beds, to establish a greenhouse, to plant currant bushes or to limit yourself to arranging flower beds and a lawn is purely your personal business.
Only in the first case, it is desirable that the greenhouse does not callus eyes, and potatoes with cucumbers did not attract attention. Personally, I believe that the garden is an intimate affair, it should not be placed in front of everyone.
It is better if it is located in the far corner of the garden, like a greenhouse or a hotbed, and is hidden behind a hedge from the same currant bushes. It is possible that over time your attitudes to what the garden should feed may be radical way to change, and then the strawberry glade can easily be transformed into a rose garden, and a mixborder will be arranged in place of the garden beds.
Laying a fruit orchard in their six hundred plots, novice gardeners are unlikely to fully imagine what lies ahead. In a dozen or two years, these twigs - apple-trees-two-year-olds - will turn into large trees, in the shade of which there may be a garden, and a greenhouse, and flower beds made with love ... Our desire to get a crop of apples of different ripening dates is understandable. So we plant 'White filling' and 'Melbu', 'Cinnamon striped' and 'Autumn striped'.
And of course, the indispensable 'Antonovka ordinary'.
And a couple of pears, a flock of cherries, currant bushes and necessarily Chekhov gooseberries. Over time, everything starts to bear fruit, and in huge quantities. In the apple year the harvest turns into a real punishment. Apples are distributed to friends, something is being processed into jam, the mountains are sent to compost.
So maybe, from the very beginning, limit your appetites? Experience has shown that for an average family it is enough to plant only two (!) Apple trees on 6 acres, one of the summer variety, the other of the autumn variety. And that’s all! This is enough for all family members, and neighbors will get it. But you will not have the question of what to chop and uproot when the shadow obscures the entire area. I admit that there are gardeners who are satisfied with the presence of only a fruit orchard. In this case, “in the shade of the trees” set up a table with chairs, arrange a sitting corner with a bench, sitting on which you can indulge in doing nothing (if possible).
Mistakes at the first stage of developing a summer cottage are expensive for a gardener - redevelopment requires tremendous effort and labor
Of course, in the shady garden, in which your plot will inevitably turn into a certain density of planting, you can also engage in decorative horticulture, picking up in the flower gardens shade-tolerant and shade-loving crops.
It, first of all, beauties hosts, ferns, hot dogs. Shadow-loving plants are such textured plants as rodgersia, buzulniki, klopogony. In the penumbra, hydrangeas and astilba will feel quite comfortable. But be prepared for what you have to give up from annuals, as well as from phlox, daylily, pion and delphinium. You will also have to bury the dream of the rosary, since roses require an exceptionally sunny location.
Advice of a specialist
When planning a fruit garden, it is necessary to imagine in a mental way how trees will eventually rise and where they will give a shadow. It is necessary to orient the plantations to the sides of the world, planting the seedlings preferably along the northern boundary of the site (well, if there is a road, and not neighboring estates).
The perfect solution will be planting large-sized plants, especially apple and pear trees, next to the house. Over time, they will shade the house, saving him from overheating in the hot summer. In the shade of these trees you can equip a recreation area with a barbecue area, which is very convenient: you do not need to carry trays with utensils far away. Yes, and a cup of tea from a samovar is worth a drink. Here, in the shade, install a garden swing, arrange a playground for your grandchildren to be under constant viewing and not in the sun.

Do not plant much in the new garden!
The cure for greed
I absolutely understand those people who, having grabbed the well-known "gardener virus", cannot stop in their acquisitions of plants. I myself am ill with the same disease. For three decades of gardening, what hobbies were there! She collected phloxes and peonies, it was insanity to collect the host, one of the latest exacerbations ended with a new collection, this time from panicle hydrangeas. Now I'm looking at hellebores - what a delight!
The problem is how to place these treasures on the site, because it is not rubber, and plants need to give maximum comfort and attention. Any enthusiastic gardener sooner or later faces the problem of lack of space for planting. How to be in this case?
At first, while there is still room in the flower beds, plantings are compacted. This method, of course, has certain advantages - annual weeds are practically not sown in flower beds and in a mixborder, as cultivated plants simply do not let them in. But at the same time, as practice shows, with this method of placement, plants tend to hurt. Not all of them can put up with poor ventilation conditions, shading and competition for food and water. From time to time, such flower beds inevitably have to be thinned out, perennials - divided, dragged to another place, etc.
Therefore, I immediately urge not to get involved in this business deeply, although I understand that for enthusiastic gardeners this call will hang in the air. What can be offered as an alternative to spontaneous and unregulated acquisitions? Collecting is necessary to give some sense, focusing on certain areas. For example, if you hunt for phlox, then only for gaganovsky sorts.
Hosts are collected exclusively blue, and even better - miniature: these cute crumbs take up very little space. Roses do not buy everything in a row, for example, to be limited to remains. Or put together a collection of lace roses. A great idea is to find and plant in your garden the historical French peonies of Lemoine selection.
And if lilac - it’s exclusively Kolesnikov’s varieties: some of them are very rare. Then your collection will take on a completely different meaning and will not be a spontaneous collection of random cultivars
Every time, going to an exhibition of flowers, the day before, I'm having a session of self-hypnosis, that I have everything and I do not need anything. But I always return, of course, not empty-handed. Well, if not with full bags in both hands.
Well, what can I do? The disease is protracted, almost untreated, because drugs from greed have not yet been invented. Common sense could become an assistant, but he is paralyzed by a huge desire to replenish the collection with one or more specimens, without which further existence is simply impossible!
Only the lack of space for landing can stop the elements.
But the dodgy mind of the gardener will always find an opportunity to sacrifice something for the sake of a new acquisition. Yes, and our harsh winter helps us, culling every year some specimens. In the spring, I never make a tragedy when I'm missing something missing during the winter. On the contrary, I am glad that there is a place for new landings.
I'm familiar with one gardener, who, carried away by daylilies, gave up other cultures, giving away everything to his neighbors!
