Raspberry cultivation using the “long shoot” technology
May raspberries or long cane technology - long shoot
Olga Yemelyanova, a researcher at the berry crops department, tells about the new technology.
Today, the world is actively developing new technologies for growing raspberries in sheltered soil, which allows to “accelerate” the crop. One of such methods, which is actively used in the Netherlands, Poland, is “long cane"(Translated from English -"long runaway"), I.e. fruiting on biennial wood.
In foreign literature I read an interesting article on this subject, where it was described that it is possible to get up to 50 tons of harvest per hectare on the raspberry of the summer ripening period! Very much this information has hooked me.
And last year the opportunity to test this unique method also appeared in our institute. The experiment was decided on a repair raspberry plant to reveal the full potential of the cultivated varieties.

Long Escape Technology
The essence of the “long sap” technology is as follows: raspberries are grown in a greenhouse in round containers of 7,5 liters (two plants in a pot), filled with a substrate based on coconut fiber (soaked in water).
Before planting, seedlings are kept in storage at a temperature not lower than 0 degrees. Planted 130-140 days before fruiting (in February). Containers are arranged in rows (the distance between which is 1,75 m) 5-7 cm above the soil level - this can significantly reduce the level of infection with fungal diseases, root rot. To fix the shoots (their average height is 1,6-1,8 m), a trellis is installed in a row. Plants pollinate bumblebees.
Top dressing of raspberries grown by such technology
Walking in a tunnel amidst abundant fruiting raspberries, I suppose that such raspberry giants need special food.
An important condition for the successful growth of raspberries in the greenhouse is to ensure a high level of mineral nutrition along with the required temperature (at least +15 degrees), good lighting, and humidity of 65-75%.
The “menu” is specially made for raspberries and includes 16 macro- and microelements necessary for this culture. Moreover, fertilizers constantly come along with drip irrigation - up to 10 times a day.
It's only the beginning!
This year, the first raspberries were picked at the institute on May 18. After the harvest, plants need a dormant period - for about a month raspberries rest. It is cut off and transferred to pots in a cold room. At this time, no food, only watering so that the roots do not dry out. And in August, raspberries "wake up" (grows, gives new shoots, blooms) and bears fruit until late autumn. Last year, the last berry was picked on November 5th.

Is it possible to use the “long glancing” method in open ground?
You can try, but in this case you need treatment from pests. And the temperature regime is difficult to control.
Probably frosting of shoots in winter. Why did we move to the protected ground?
In the last two years, the peak of the harvest of raspberry raspberries falls under the early autumn frosts (last year it was September 7, the year before last it was September 5). As a result, the berry freezes. And in the greenhouse all conditions are created to get two full-fledged high-quality crops - in spring and autumn - with a mass of fruits of 8-10 g.
The new technology allows to improve the quality of berries, avoid the defeat of fruits with gray rot, reduce the number of treatments with pesticides, increase the yield and extend the shelf life.
But is it really possible to collect a raspberries, say, in the winter?
Why not? But this is an expensive pleasure - additional lighting, heating are needed. Although in the future we have such ideas.

I have a cottage under Tver, I grow a gentleman's set: currants, gooseberries, raspberries. Here with the latter there were problems. Our local garden gurus say: oh, risk, do not bend the raspberries, one day it will freeze with you.
#
I must admit, bending the process is not easy. It is necessary to reduce the close branches to the right and left together and bend to the ground with the help of metal arcs. And in the spring, do not rush raspberries. The stems are fragile. We must wait for a stable plus temperature. Then, wait a week or two for the branches to straighten, and then tie them to
tapestries or just dissolve. But if for several years your raspberries are not freezing, then, I think, this is not necessary. Well, if there is a building next to it that will protect it from the wind and will hold the snow that will not let it freeze.
