September care: what ripens, how to collect, where to store
People say: "Spring day feeds the year." However, the autumn days are not inferior to anything, and sometimes even surpass them in importance, because the crop must not only be grown, but also harvested and stored. Each vegetable has its own requirements for the terms of collection and winter storage. Consider these features on the example of the most common cultures.
In September, the collection of early cabbage, carrots, beets and potatoes begins in the Moscow vegetable gardens. How to understand that the vegetable is already ripe and suitable for harvest? Each plant has its own characteristics.
Cabbage early
Early white cabbage is harvested in late summer - early autumn. It is possible to determine that the cabbage has ripened using a simple technique: if the head is firm, not deformed, light green in color, the cabbage can be removed. It is better not to delay it, otherwise, if the cabbage stays in the garden for a long time, its quality will deteriorate.
COUNCIL
If you notice that the head starts to crack, do the following. Tilt the head out there, so that most of the roots burst with a crash from the ground, and leave it in that position. Cabbage does not deteriorate from this, it will only stop growing, which will help to stop the cracking of the head.
If the head is dense, not deformed, light green in color - cabbage can be removed. It is better not to delay it, otherwise, if the cabbage stays in the garden for a long time, its quality will deteriorate.
Even if the heads of cabbage do not crack, they should not be left on the beds longer than mid-to-late September, since all early varieties of cabbage are very tender, and begin to decay due to lower air temperatures and increased humidity.
When harvesting cabbage, it is important to know what you are going to do with it in the future: store or ferment, because the harvesting method in these cases is different. Cabbage intended for harvesting should be chopped under a head of cabbage and all coarse green leaves should be removed. In this form, it can be stored for some time until use.
The cabbage, intended for winter storage, is torn together with the root, which is cut slightly, the outer leaves are also cut off. In very dry cellars, cabbage stems should be stuck in boxes with wet sand, in a more humid room it is better to hang heads on the rails fixed to the ceiling.

STORAGE RULES OF CABBAGE IN THE BASEMENT
- The cellar for storage of cabbage should be arranged in the ground or have thick walls with whole maintaining a uniform temperature.
- The optimum temperature for storing cabbage is about + PC, because at a higher temperature the heads go bad much faster.
- If possible, the basement should be ventilated
- The air in the room must be dry, so you can not store fresh cabbage with potatoes, as potatoes evaporate a large amount of moisture during storage.
Potato
September is a great time to harvest potatoes. But before harvesting, do the so-called potato leaf training.
The method has been known since the XNUMXth century; it can significantly increase the productivity of potato bushes. It consists in bending the tops to the ground, which is why it stops growing, and all the strength of the plant is directed to the formation of tubers. The time for training is the flowering period of the tops, at this time the stems have already ripened.
Potato is a plant sensitive to frost, so digging up tubers is important before severe frosts. It is necessary to dig potatoes in dry weather, it is best to use the forks that raise the entire nest of tubers and shake them off the ground. Tubers are stacked in small piles to dry. To protect them from rain or dew, the tubers should be covered with something.
Before laying in the cellar, these piles are scattered for ventilation and final drying, and also to remove diseased or green tubers that are unfit for storage.
For harvesting and sorting potatoes, you have to choose sunny days: in the sun, sick tubers are much more visible, and sorting takes place very quickly and efficiently.
The best place to store tubers is a dry, cool, dark, frost-protected basement. If the potato is not properly stored - for example, if it lies for a long time in a bright and warm place - it turns green and becomes unfit for food. In winter, it is important to periodically sort out potatoes for rotting tubers, which must be removed immediately.
Carrots
Carrots are cleaned when the soil is already dry. You can start cleaning after 15 September.
After harvest, the vegetables are dried. In dry weather, this is only a few hours. After drying, the carrot crop must be cleaned of the remnants of the earth.
Carrots are a very moody vegetable in terms of storage. The temperature of the storage room should range from -1 to + 2 * C, and air humidity should be approximately 90-95%. Ventilation should not be abused: air and root crops should be limited.
It is best to store carrots in closed containers without access to air, for this purpose plastic boxes with lids in which the carrots are interlaid by coniferous sawdust
In dry rooms, carrots are stacked with pyramids on the shelves. To do this, a layer of sand is poured onto the shelf at least 2 cm. And on top of it lay carrots with their heads outward - and the next layers are also sandwiched.
Beet
Beetroot partially protrudes above the ground, so it does not tolerate minus temperatures.
As with other crops, the best time to harvest is dry, calm weather. Dig the beets in the same way as carrots - dig them with a pitchfork and carefully pull out the root crop.
Beets are absolutely unpretentious compared to carrots, you can store it in almost any convenient way. However, the ideal storage conditions are the temperature from + 1 to + 2C (although the beets are perfectly stored and at + A * C) and the humidity of air from 90 to 95%. For storage, the roots are well placed in a box with sand.
Beets are an ideal neighbor for potatoes. To save space in the cellar, and at the same time to provide beets with optimal storage conditions, lay it on top of the potatoes. Beet root crops perfectly absorb excess moisture, which is only good for them, thereby protecting potato tubers from decay.

PREPARING BIRTH TO WINTER STORAGE
- Beets need to be cleaned from the ground, but in no case should rootbeds be struck, hitting them against each other, or to clean the ground with a knife. The beet peel is very tender and easily damaged, which affects storage.
- The side roots need to be removed, and the main root can be shortened a little, leaving 5-7, see.
- Cutting the bolus, you need to retreat a few millimeters from the root of the root, so that the juice of the beet does not leak out of the pulp.
- Before you put it in the cellar, you need to thoroughly dry the vegetables.
