Kohlrabi in the Moscow Region - tips for summer residents to grow and a couple of useful recipes
Delicacy for weight loss
I want to talk about the favorite vegetable of our entire family - turnip cabbage, or kohlrabi (that is how this word is translated from German). Unfortunately, it is not often found in the gardens of our compatriots. And in our family they began to grow it in the 80s of the last century. Even at the old cottage, mom miraculously managed to get the seeds of this vegetable crop, unknown to anyone at that time.
In surprise, we watched how something similar to a turnip began to appear from the ground, but lilac in color, and even with leaves sticking out like feathers. My children first tried this cabbage and amicably declared: "We want to eat it every day!" And we began to plant little by little different varieties of a wonderful and tasty plant. Later we learned that there is no less vitamin C in it than in lemon, that it is rich in potassium, calcium, and B vitamins, that it contains a lot of useful coarse fibers.
It turned out that it is very useful for diet food, and even with a universal craving for weight loss - this is an absolutely indispensable product!
Now, at my new summer cottage, my grandchildren are happy to eat kohlrabi and ask for supplements. In our small garden, of course, grow, like everyone else, potatoes, beets, carrots, herbs, onions, garlic. But if we look at prices in stores, we will see that all these vegetables are not so expensive, but our beloved kohlrabi in November costs 100 rubles per kilogram, and in the spring - almost 300 rubles! Therefore, this year we decided to reduce the potato beds and use them for planting kohlrabi.

Pests can not be ruffled!
Since I am an opponent of any seedlings on the windowsills, in early May, the seeds of kohlrabi, as well as other vegetables, are sown in a high bed and spilled with warm water. Then I put the arcs for the greenhouse, on them I strengthen the lutrasil, and on top - the film. I do it regardless air temperature. When plants appear on 4-5 real leaves (usually at the end of May), the seedlings are planted on the beds. When planting in the holes, ash is added, the plants are well spilled. Also, the sprout must be slightly closed, so that the turnip does not protrude from the ground very much. Soil for kohlrabi needs well-fertilized, weakly acidic or neutral.
My favorite varieties are Violet, Vienna White and Giant. In the photo 1 Giant on a high bed in early July. For kohlrabi, we took three beds 10 m long and 40 cm wide, planting it in a checkerboard pattern. Seedlings quickly started growing, well rooted, and once in early June I fed it with complex fertilizer for cabbage, and at the end of June with an additional yeast brew.
And since July 10, we have been using fresh kohlrabi - in salads and by itself. The only thing that happened with us in the middle of June was a walk of a mole along one of the beds. Approaching the garden in the morning, I could not believe my eyes: the plants drooped, the leaves hung like rags. When I saw the loosened earth, I realized that the mole had ruled here, and he liked the roots of cabbage.
It was necessary to urgently add land, trample down, water. Were very hot days, and I covered the affected bed with lutrasi-scrap so that the cabbage does not wither. They put a mole repeller, and most of the plants were not damaged, gave a good harvest for the joy of the whole family.
Yes, I forgot to write about watering. Our darling of water needs less than her white sister. If the weather is hot and there is no rain, we water it once a week, in the heat - twice and in plenty, 10 liters for every two bushes.
It is very important to break the kohlrabi in time, otherwise the flesh will harden and become stiff, tasteless.
If pests eat cabbage leaves, they don’t touch the turnip itself - the peel is too thick, the caterpillars can’t cope. True, unexpected guests appeared several years ago, having eaten a whole turnip. I remember that I went to the garden to pick kohlrabi and froze: it looks like whole cabbage, but there is no pulp, i.e. everything is completely eaten out inside, one peel remains. Just a whole family of mice feasted! But this is an isolated case, no one else encroached on our darling.

Kohlrabi: 2 crop
Kohlrabi belongs to the early ripening types of cabbage, and many gardeners manage to get 2 crops per season at once - in mid-summer and autumn. In August, plants of the second wave are already beginning to form stems. This means that it is time to stop feeding, but watering should be plentiful, especially if the end of summer and the beginning of autumn turned out to be dry. But in no case should waterlogging or stagnation of water be allowed - the stems will crack.
Cut the crop before frost, otherwise kohlrabi will become fibrous. If you remove it on time, it is stored in the cellar for several months.
