Growing beets in the Tver region - my tips
Probably every gardener among the plants has friends who bring a stable harvest every year. There are friends who please every other time. And there are those who for some reason are mischievous and stubbornly refuse to grow, although summer residents before them do not dance: either they are ill, then they “greet” the pests, or it is not clear what they want. We’ll talk about this case.
It did not happen all at once
Root crops did not work for a long time. I even now can not say that with them on a short leg. Turnip, for example, stubbornly does not want to have anything to do with me: either regularly goes into the shooter, or turns small, or it is eaten by caterpillars. Well, I'll still look for her approach. I'll try on the advice to treat grooves with seeds mustard powder and pepper. Perhaps, at last, I will be lucky with the rapper-touchy?
For a very long time, beets didn’t work out for me either, which was especially offensive - it’s just a storehouse of useful substances and a real medicine for the intestines, thyroid gland and the body as a whole. Yes, and this culture itself is unprecedented in our gardens by no means you can name. Our ancestors cultivated it, and even in what quantities. And then ... But slowly, incredulous beets began to treat me more favorably. As experience shows, the main thing for her is the large distance between the plants, then they will turn out to be large. And this is her first secret.

I always sow the beet in the very beginning of May, at Kuzma, in full accordance with the people's sign, in well-warmed soil. By the way, about the soil. Here, too, there is one very significant nuance, to which I initially treated with insufficient seriousness (maybe, therefore, I was haunted by failure). And the fact is that beets like potassium and calcium, and also like the neutral acidity of the soil. And I have it sour, sod-podzolic. Hence the second conclusion: to obtain a good harvest of beets, it is necessary to conduct deoxidation of the earth and enrich it with potassium and calcium. Therefore, I now always sprinkle the beds generously with ashes and water abundantly.
If you are preparing a place for beets in the fall, then you can use dolomite flour, but in the spring I would not advise doing this - you can burn seedlings.
In the garden I make grooves and sow dry fruits (in each glomerule there are several seeds) from the sachets. I sprinkle the earth and wait for the shoots, water if necessary. When the first real leaf appears, I thin it (however, my grandmother usually does this). It is possible to plant extra plants, but they take root long and lag behind in growth from those that sat in a permanent place, so it's better not to waste time on trifles, but just throw them away. After thinning, the beet is hummocked and watered. After a while I repeat the hilling.
Lei, do not pour
I plant beetroot in three rows on a broad bed, regularly loosening rows, not allowing the appearance of weeds. Beet belongs to the group of drought-resistant plants: with proper
When she cares, a powerful root system is formed, which allows to extract water from a great depth. If there is no rain, water the beets every three days. Large leaves act like an umbrella, obscuring the soil and protecting it from drying out. But the beet does not like waterlogging - last year, for example, July was rainy, and it just froze. And this is her third feature - sensitivity to water balance.
I feed the beets twice a season with nettle infusion - at the beginning and at the end of June, later nitrogen-containing top dressings are undesirable because they worsen the formation of the root crop. I do the second thinning in mid-July - I choose root crops for food where they grow too often. Little grated beets go away with a bang with the first cucumbers and chopped herbs.
The main thing is not to be afraid that sowing will become rare. But the remaining plants will develop into healthy and large vegetables.
If you want to save space - plant cylindrical varieties, they grow vertically, the distance can be made much less. I grow both round and long beets: Buckwheat-crust, Cylinder, Mulatto, Dark Horse, Slavyanka, Kazachka. I harvest the beets in early September, cutting the tops. Mine, dry and put in buckets of sand. It is stored in an apartment on a non-freezing, unheated loggia until the New Year. Then, of course, it dries up, but it remains a little - the main part manages to be used in autumn-winter salads with garlic, sauerkraut, Antonov apples.

And there’s also beet leaf - chard. It happens with red stalks, and with green. It, like any leafy vegetable, is much easier to grow - regular watering and occasionally weeding. Large leaves, just like beets, go to a salad with parsley and dill, and it also gives a good sauce, for example, to rice: leaves need to be cut into strips and stewed in a pan with tomato and herbs.
In general, beets are a very diverse crop to use and not so difficult to grow. Patience and perseverance, thoughtful and creative approach - and everything will turn out! And “My beautiful summer house” will always tell me if difficulties arise.

My planting in the garden is never without beets.
It is rich in betaine, which helps in the treatment of depression, and tryptophan, which is called a substance of good mood.
I usually plant varieties of different maturity, so that you can eat useful roots from the beginning of summer and until the next harvest.
Beet consumption improves digestion, helps to cleanse the body of toxins and toxins, and even improves mood. But, as in everything, it is necessary to observe the measure. Salad or other dish from beets, so that they would benefit the body, it is enough to cook 2-3 times a week.

In the dense soil, the beetroot often undergoes a root in the transplant. Such plants do not live, but wither, and you will not get a normal harvest. So I developed my own technology.
After pouring a lot of water on the garden bed and letting her rest for a couple of hours, I cut the shovel with a shovel of the shovel on the pit you need for the beet. And then just fill the roots of transplanted seedlings. They straighten out, and the plants grow very quickly.

Why am I planting cylindrical beets? Yes, because I love to cook and eat borscht. Culinary specialists will understand me - it’s much more convenient to peel, chop and rub a cylindrical root crop than a round one. In addition, this beet has a pleasant bright red color, without pale veins, it is tasty and juicy. Another advantage I note is that it is well stored, resistant to pests and with proper care gives a wonderful harvest.
It is important, of course, to take into account that the soil is highly affected by productivity. If she is too sour, then the beet will either be very frail, or will not grow at all. So with increased acidity in the bed, add lime or dolomite flour. Beets grow well where carrots, cabbage, cucumbers or onions were previously planted. The plant needs a lot of light (otherwise the root will be unsweetened and shallow), and it will not tolerate the cold soil well, which means that it should be sown at the very end of spring or even in the 1-th decade of June, when the soil warms to at least 6 °. At cooling, crops should be sheltered. Beets are very sensitive to boron and magnesium, but it is contraindicated in fresh manure. It is also important to find a golden mean in watering: overmoistening can lead to rotting of the roots, and a deficiency will have a bad effect on the growth and taste of the root.
