Tree lilies (photo) planting and care
Do tree lilies exist?
A HISTORY WITH A Doubtful Beginning ...
What the lively traders at garden fairs do not offer to buy during the planting season - camellias blooming in the Moscow region, repair peonies, yellow phlox, blue roses and tree lilies, accompanied by fantastic photos. Authoritative experts with no less persistence from the pages of magazines prove that such plants do not exist in principle ... And yet, for many years, ace sellers have been selling this, and gardeners continue to buy regularly.
Still, there is something in this, I thought, wandering around such a fair. Flower growers with many years of experience being deceived by beautiful pictures are not only annoyed, but simply ashamed, but it is also a shame to remain in the backyard of a garden fashion with old varieties. World breeding is developing intensively, and internal doubts torment us - what if the miracles really came out of it?
The only thing in this case is to look not at attractive pictures, but in the literal sense of the word to the heart of the matter - to the root. If the quality of the planting material is good, then even if you do not get an exclusive novelty, but at least get a good healthy plant. Based on these considerations, of all the proposed - miracles - I became interested in lilies.
I have had successful experience in growing this crop. It is known that the standard planting material - bulbs with a diameter of 3 to 6 cm - is sold for planting in spring and autumn (we wrote about the undesirability of autumn planting of imported lily bulbs last year).
Often such cheap planting material is weakened bulbs after forcing and cutting from greenhouses. In the first year, even the most powerful and tallest varieties of such bulbs form low plants with 1-2 buds. To fully restore the bulbs, these buds must be removed. Bulbs with a diameter of less than 4 cm in the first year, especially during spring planting, may not bloom at all.
The bulbs of “tree lilies” really surprised me with their large size (diameter> 8 cm), powerful covering scales and roots without any signs of sagging and damage.
Planting material of this quality is really rare for us. The price for it, however, was also higher in comparison with ordinary bulbs - but exactly barely times. Of course, I didn’t acquire any blue or blue lilies, but I liked the picture with large pink and white flowers. Considering that the difference in quality exceeds the difference in price and justifies my doubts and risks, I acquired three such miracle bulbs.
... AND HAPPY CONTINUED
A month after the purchase, the bulbs were stored in moist peat on the lower shelf of the refrigerator at a temperature of 10-12 °. Soon they began to sprout together. In the second half of April, when the soil in the garden was sufficiently warm, it planted the bulbs to a depth of 10-15 cm (counting from the bottom of the bulb).
Further care was the most common - weeding and loosening. In dry weather - watering. And fertilizing with a solution of complete mineral fertilizer once a month.
In May, I was pleased with unusually powerful seedlings. Then the plants quickly reached a height of 1,5 m and the first half of the summer decorated the garden with powerful stems with large shiny dark green leaves. And, frankly, they were like elegant trees! At the end of July, the plants bloomed, on each stalk there were 5-7 large flowers. Lilies perfectly overwintered and the next year began to multiply.
The acquaintance of the garden lily collector, seeing the flowering, said that I was lucky and I acquired a wonderful variety of Nymph from the group of modern OT-hybrids (Oriental x Trumpet, East and Tubular lilies crossed). Such plants are characterized by powerful growth, endurance and abundant flowering.

So I have to admit that I am happy with the purchase, and the risks and costs were justified.
Recently I saw bulbs of the same kind in a solid shopping center, but they lay next to a normal picture showing the color and shape of the flower. The price for them was also twice as high compared to bulbs of standard size.
Unfortunately, there was no agiotage of gardeners at this stand, unfortunately. The excellent quality of the planting material remains unnoticed by the majority of buyers, so that the ability of sellers in the markets to advertise a good product can be learned.

Now there is a lot of speculation about the lily-tree. What sellers do not promise to sell their goods! And abundant bloom, and growth is almost twice as high as human. But in fact, flower growers are often disappointed.
I have long grown tall lilies - about 120-140 cm. They are terry, have very large flowers, which are quite low on the stem. Bloom for a very long time. But these are cut lilies, which over time cease to amaze with color and growth.
I wrote from abroad bulbs of gladioli, tulips and lilies. There were 50 in packages. In the first year, their flowering simply fascinated and delighted. It was a real miracle - a whole plantation of gorgeous flowers, in the second year the number decreased by 5 times: something died, something did not survive in the winter, some were reborn, the color of the flower changed. Thought it was me doing something wrong. But a man who is fond of growing lilies told me that this is usually the case with many imported bulbs. At first they bloom profusely, and then they quickly grow weak. After all, they need special care, treatment for viruses, but we do not have such drugs. Therefore, foreign lilies degenerate.

I want to introduce you to the eukomis, or pineapple lily. I drew attention to her as soon as I saw the image of the eukomis on the package with onions. Then I was weakly assured that I could grow such beauty, but I did it! If you don’t know what kind of flower it is, think about it - pineapple.
It turned out "pineapple" is not at all capricious. In general, he, like all Lukovinsky, needs watering only in drought, he loves heat and sun, does not tolerate fresh manure. In the middle of September it should be dug out and put in a cool place, so that in the spring it is again planted and then admired with its beauty.

Lilies are wonderful flowers with a wonderful aroma. At the same time, they are surprisingly hardy and easy to care for. I grow lilies in a diffused light plot. I dig the soil for planting 30-40 cm, as the roots of the plant go deep.
I plant lilies in mid-April and early May. Before planting the bulbs, I soak for half an hour in potassium permanganate (5 g per 10 l of water). Planting depth depends on the diameter of the bulb. For large bulbs, I make holes with a depth of 15-20 cm. For small bulbs, I make 8-10 cm. I pour a thin layer of dry river sand on the bottom, then place the onion and fill it with soil on top.
When the lilies proklyutsya, gently loosen the soil and make fertilizing with mineral fertilizer. With the onset of heat, the top layer of the soil should not dry out. I water the lilies before and after flowering in the evening only under the root, I avoid getting water on the leaves, so as not to provoke diseases and burns. The soil around the plants is weeded and loosened. In 1, the year after the landing, I delete the buds that have appeared. Plants above 1 m tie. Wilted flowers are removed, and the flower stalks in autumn cut off at ground level. For the winter mulch the soil around the lilies with dry leaves.
