How to make a trellis for a blackberry - good advice (+ drawing)
Miraculous blackberries and trellis for her
Yes, that's what the traditional healers call the blackberry. An unjustly forgotten relative of a raspberry has so many useful properties that it can be safely considered a cure for almost all diseases!
About seven years ago, I walked around the market past seedlings and heard the seller answer someone: "This is a blackberry."
She turned and could not tear her eyes away from the small, sturdy escape. Bring home and rejoice, like a child.
In the second year I already grew a huge bush. Scourge thick, without spines, more than 2 m in length, grow in different directions.
Number of lashes: 10-15 pcs. last year and the same number of this year. Peduncles very long and fragile.
The bush is huge: until you reach the berries in the middle, you break the side branches. Collect the berries had to even kneeling under a bush, as in a hut. And half of the berries generally disappeared on broken branches: because of the powerful young animals it was very difficult to approach the bush.
I suffered like this for three years, already wanted to get rid of the blackberry - it occupies a huge area, but there is no joy. But once she looked at the grapes and thought: maybe blackberry and make the same support?
Concreted three metal two-meter pillars. The distance between them is 2 m, no longer necessary. My front garden was fenced with a low metal fence - I attached it to the posts in two rows, one above the other. It is better not to make wooden poles with wire: a weak and short-lived construction, and the bush is too heavy during fruiting.

He grows up near the central post. I bind the two-year-old whips horizontally to the left side, annuals as they grow right to the right (see diagram). After harvesting two-year-old lashes pruned.
The next year I grow the growing young thongs on the left side, which is vacated, and so every year. Now it is very convenient to collect berries, they all hang freely, just a wall of berries (see photo).
In the autumn on each lash I clean all the side shoots, there remains a two-meter “whip”. A huge peduncle grows from the sinuses of each leaf. If you do not remove the side shoots, you will get impenetrable wilds.
Plant a blackberry! I only have one bush, and I have enough berries for myself, and for neighbors, friends, and acquaintances.

Can blackberries and grapes grow on one trellis?

Joint cultivation of these actively growing crops in one area will lead to poor airing of plantings, shading and, correspondingly, an increase in the likelihood of damage by fungal diseases.

I have been offered to share blackberry seedlings for a long time, but I still couldn’t decide whether I need to get in touch with this unusual culture for me or not. After all, sometimes you can’t get over the usual raspberries, but here ... But, in the end, having once again tasted the delicious berries that my good friends treated me to, I gained courage and added a newcomer to the garden. And then I didn’t regret it at all, since after two years the bush pleased me with a rich harvest of very large, juicy, with slightly sour berries that hung in large clusters - I had never seen such beauty! I confess I don’t know the names of the variety, but, probably, this is precisely the famous besspin blackberry, because the branches are completely devoid of thorns. It would be nice if all the berries were of such quality ... It’s also nice that she doesn’t need special care, there are no pests on her either.
Over the whole summer, I feed her three times (during flowering, after setting berries and during their ripening) - I just pour it under the root on a bucket of fermented chicken droppings (liter per bucket of water).
Well, of course, I water during the heat, and so that the earth does not dry out so quickly, I mulch straw or dry grass around the bush. Since the blackberry lashes grow in length very quickly, I made a trellis of boards near it, to which I lash and tie. In the autumn, I cut out all the fruiting branches at the root, and leave the young ones (which have grown over the summer) - they will bear fruit next summer. Before the cold weather, I tie all the lashes into a bundle and wrap them with covering material. Recently I was told that you can drop them or just lay them on the ground, sprinkled with straw, and press down on top with a roofing material or a piece of slate. Probably also good ways, I don’t know, but so far I like mine better.
Yes, I also forgot to say: if you want to propagate a blackberry, then you need to bend the whips and fix with something so that their tips fall to the ground - and then they themselves will take root, and quite quickly.
