Planting winter garlic under a layer of mulch

Growing winter garlic under a leaf layer is a great result!
I'm not going to bend my back!
Well, finally, I decided to share my experience of growing one of the most valuable, in my opinion, crops in the garden. I read a lot of letters about winter garlic and each time I was surprised: it's necessary, how much time and effort is spent by poor summer residents on something that can be completely avoided!
Therefore, I will describe in detail my method cultivation and planting of winter garlic, which can be called so - for the lazy. And all because I do not loosen the plantings, do not weed and do not even water, and the crops always get excellent. And I don’t dig up the ground before planting garlic - in the sense I don’t touch it at all.
In an extreme case, if the weeds chosen at the planting bed are cut, I loosen it with a flat cutter. And then I simply divide the heads into denticles, take each one at the top and vertically press it into the ground to a depth corresponding to the length of the index finger. If the ground is too compact, then first with the same index finger I make in it depressions (of course, without a good rubberized glove, it is better not to perform this trick).
I carry out the planting myself according to the 12 × 12 cm pattern, and first I plant the teeth from the most selected heads, and on the plants that will later rise from them, I will then leave a few arrows for marking - here proven and high-quality seed material grows. Many will immediately tell me that I plant too often. I agree, but you forgot that I did not accidentally name my method of cultivation for the lazy.
And the whole secret is this: after the end of the planting, I cover the entire garden with thick (10-12 cm) layer of fallen leaves.

Two large birches already grow on my plot. Here they are and they give me a truly precious material, which is the guarantee of a good harvest and my peace. To all who follow my example, I separately want to advise you to be in the spring of patience and not to remove the coat from the garlic from the garlic. Yes, it will not be easy to break old ideas. Yes, garlic will rise slightly later than usual. But you will get a reward with interest!
When I applied this method for the first time, every morning, barely waking up, I immediately ran to the garden to check my plantings. I was worried terribly: the neighbors had sprouts of 15 cm each, but mine was empty! But the garlic nevertheless made its way and then went so tall that it was impossible to keep track of it. Further is even better. Those neighbors loosen the ground without breathing, run around with watering cans, fight with weeds, fertilize, loosen again, water the beds again, and I just toss the cut grass on the leaf litter from above ...
Another tip: if the weather is dry, it's also worth covering the mulch. As for the weeds, then they are not able to break through the leaf litter. And the land under it is wet, loose, worms are bald, garlic too, well, I'm for the company. I come to the bed only three or four times during the summer.
Gathering the harvest is also a pleasure. From the ground garlic is easily pulled out, without the help of a shovel or other appliances (while earlier, when it was grown by my grandmother in the traditional way, cleaning was turned into a real hard labor, especially in a dry summer). But I dry land and store garlic just like everyone else. In three years of growing garlic under a thick layer of mulch, not one head has rotted, although the two summers were quite rainy.
Two crops + siderat
I hope my experience will be useful to those who have little time or health does not allow spending much time in the "G" position and carrying heavy watering cans. The only thing I urge those who decide to try this method of growing garlic - do not try immediately on the entire garden. Take one running meter for an experiment — suddenly your garlic variety is more capricious, or the soil will fail, or the weather will throw some kind of fortel.
After all, what is excellent in one area, on the other can turn into a complete failure. Recently, by the way, I read that it is impossible to press denticles into the ground. It's strange, because my grandmother always planted this way, and so do I, and there's nothing wrong with garlic. Maybe readers will clarify this question?
And I want to tell you about a curious experiment I spent only one season, but quite successfully. So, all on the same garden with garlic, about three weeks before harvesting, I planted daikon grade Minavishi.
Holes depth 2 cm, with an interval of 40 cm, made a finger directly between the heads and into each threw a pair of seeds. I did not fall asleep and did not water (the weather was damp).
When sprouts appeared, superfluous shoots removed and forgot about daikon until September. After cleaning the garlic (and since I cleaned it without a shovel, the daikon, who was still small by that time, did not disturb or injure) scattered some mustard seed white on the mulch and turned the mulch to stick under it from the gluttonous birds.
As a result, the daikon, sown before the mustard, also did not suffer from its neighborhood and grew to the joy of large and clean (in a dry summer, I would probably suffer from a cruciferous flea, but I was lucky).

This is how I took a crop of garlic and daikon from a single bed in a season, spending a minimum of effort. Yes, and the siderate had time to grow! And by the next spring mulch and mustard {I did not remove it in the autumn) will rot and improve the soil.

Winter garlic: 2 way of planting
The period of planting winter garlic is quite long: from mid-August to early November. But in the early period it should be planted differently than in the later.
Until October, while it's still warm, the first method is recommended. In this case, so that the teeth do not move to growth before the cold, they are buried in the ground at 12-15 cm.
Those who did not have time to plant garlic before this date can make a second way: from the first days of October until the morning frosts. Here the denticles should be buried only on 3-5, see.
Otherwise, agricultural technology is the same with both methods. The ground for garlic should be dug up with the application of fertilizers: nitrophosks - by match
shy, humus - half a bucket, ash - half a liter jar per 1 square. m. With high soil acidity, lime must be added. If the earth is clay, sand must be added.
Fresh manure never be fertilized with garlic. After I once did it, the greens on the beds grew to glory, but the heads were small and loose. They did not last long. Quickly caught a fungus and rotted.
By the way, about fungi. To ensure that garlic does not hurt anything, before disembarkation it is required to disinfect denticles. For this I put them on 20-30 min. in a dark pink solution of potassium permanganate.

I read that garlic before dressing is etched in a solution of potassium permanganate. Is it necessary to carry out such manipulations with a bow that I want to plant for the winter?

- In principle, when preparing the seeding, all the diseased bulbs are removed, so there are not so many infections on the surface of the onion. In industrial cultivation, sowing, as a rule, is not treated. At home, you can do it. The easiest way to soak the seedling before planting for 1-2 hours in a solution of potassium permanganate (it should be concentrated, the color of a dark cherry). However, it is much more important than the sowing to warm up before planting. You can do this by expanding it near the heat source for 1-2 weeks. To accelerate the process, some use the heating in an open oven for 2-3 hours. But most importantly
- do not overheat it so that the temperature of the seed itself does not exceed + 35 degree.
