EREMURUS - CARE, COMBINATION IN THE FLOWER BOARD
Eremurus is also called scab, which in Kazakh and Tajik respectively means "glue". And this name is not accidental: the local population extracts technical maple from the roots of this plant.
About 60 species of eremurus grow in nature, but only 2 successfully grow in central Russia: Eremurus narrow-leaved (Eremurus stcnophyllus) and eremurus powerful (E. robuslus).
"In the wild" these plants prefer sandy plains, steppes, clay foothill deserts, rocky placers. And in the garden, if possible, they should be planted in bright areas with drained soil: they are better when it is dry than when it is wet.
Yes, plants are not simple, and it is not easy to tame them. Do I need to dig them up for the summer or not? Will they freeze in winter or get wet?
Gardeners are tormented by these issues, but an unequivocal answer, unfortunately, experts can not give. Everyone has different experience of growing, and in different species - a little different preferences. But you can definitely say: Eremurus will be comfortable in areas with dry soil without stagnation of moisture.

Growing Eremurus - Planting and Care
One of the components of success in the cultivation of eremurus is good planting material. Their spindle-shaped roots, more like spiders, should not be over-dried. They are planted in autumn, in September. And if you plan a transplant, you should not delay - as soon as the leaves turn yellow halfway, we start digging, very carefully, trying not to damage their fragile roots.
And be sure to prepare the landing pits - as a drainage we use fine gravel or pebbles. Pits are filled with pre-prepared soil consisting of a mixture of garden land, sand and very small pebbles. The depth of the fertile layer must be at least 20 and not more than 40 cm, although planting the plants is not deep, 6-8 cm is optimal.
Particular attention should be paid to eremurus in the spring: they start growing as soon as the temperature becomes positive, but unfortunately in our zone of risky farming at that time frosts are frequent that can damage both leaves and inflorescences.
To prevent this from happening, cover the planting in autumn with dry leaves, lapnik or straw and remove the shelter only after the threat of frost passes. And additionally in the spring, if weather forecasters promise a drop in temperature, cover the plants with any non-woven material.
Watering the Eremurus is not necessary, it is better to undercharge. That's all, they do not need to be fed, they also grow in nature on not very fertile soils.
Eremurus are giants, in height they can reach up to 2.5 m. Of course, such giants will look spectacular in any place, thanks to a peculiar, nothing like appearance. Perhaps, no perennial can not be compared in beauty, stati and elegance with eremurus. Believe me: the game is worth those "candles". In the flower garden, they are the very place in the background, and drought-resistant hypsophils, wormwoods, cyanophytes, sage are suitable as companions.
Now on sale you can find many hybrid varieties, the most popular - bright orange 'Pinokkio', light pink 'Cleopatra', salmon 'Romance', although it is better to start acquaintance with this culture from species, more “simple” eremurus.
FLOWER WITH EREMURUS: OPTION 1 “DROP - NOT SCARY”
When choosing an assortment for your flower garden, do not forget that eremurus is an ephemeroid: after flowering, by the end of June, its leaves will begin to turn yellow, and by mid-summer the plant will completely disappear in order to “shoot” again next spring. What does it mean?
And this means that we plant the eremurus among other plants in such a way that after flowering it is covered by other, stably decorative perennials.
But in the photograph presented, the eremurus is planted with a rather large massif and it is already visible that its leaves are beginning to turn yellow; and what will happen when he disappears - an empty place?
To prevent this from happening, plant next to it any perennial that is good all season, such as daylily. And let it not bother you that daylily seems to be a moisture-loving culture - it grows very well with a lack of moisture, which is exactly what erem needsrusu. as well as the pappa, planted in the foreground and forming a beautiful openwork bush, completely strewn with orange beads of inflorescences.
FLOWER WITH ERAEMURUS: THE OPTION 2 "COLOR MAGIC"
We are accustomed to associate yellow, orange colors with the end of summer, the onset of autumn, and nature itself gives them to us just at this time: most of the cultures blossoming at the end of the season are just these cheerful colors. While in spring and early summer, plants predominate with blue, pink and white flowers and inflorescences.
But if you really want to add sun in the garden, the eremurus will come to the rescue: it has many kinds and varieties of the right color. In the company to him plant a peach daylily and bright yellow coreopsis. And so that it was not boring, for contrast add crimson veronica and lilac verbena and monarch.
COMBINATIONS OF OTHER COLORS WITH ERAMS
1. The combination of a gentle pink eremurus and purple bow: this couple looks like a spectacular huge bouquet. But to plant them better next to the stably decorative perennials, as both one and the other after flowering "grow dull", losing their charm.
2. Eremurus are not the most traditional satellites of roses, especially since in the central part of Russia it is not so easy to achieve their simultaneous flowering: you need to choose the most flowering eremuruses and the earliest roses.
3. A beautiful, contrasting combination of bright crimson penstemon and a rich yellow eremurus.
4. An interesting combination of rich blue delphinium and peach eremurus: similar inflorescences, contrasting in color - unusual and extremely impressive.
5. Eremurus are not lost in any composition, this plant is good for everyone: both narrow leaves collected in small bushes, and long inflorescences, which can be up to 150 flowers.
6. Creamy pink openwork eremurus and ink iris look great together. Even despite the serious difference in growth, a harmonious duet was obtained. And according to environmental conditions, these plants are similar - they will be comfortable together.
7. Eremurus can be different, it is not necessarily gorgeous plants, there are among them species-more modest, for example, the eremurus crestaceae or mremiculome eremurus.
8. Eremurus are especially good in a single planting, but among other plants, even those as bright as roses, they will be able to perform with dignity.

EREMURUS - LANDING AND CARE: FLOWER TIPS
Eremurus - an impressive and majestic plant with powerful swept inflorescences. From the Greek language its name translates as "tail in the desert". In our climate, the steppe eremurus is considered a capricious plant. But if you delve into the peculiarities and "habits" of this delightful handsome man, then you can grow it without any difficulties. Usually, the eremurus is planted in the center of the flower beds, in the background of the mixborders or in separate small groups. It looks good next to irises, lavender, and grades of July flowering - with a mordant and herbs.
Special signs.
A large rhizome herbaceous perennial of the family of asphodelids. The root system has an unusual shape: from the central disk (which is called the Kornedon and can reach 10 cm in diameter), a thick, fleshy roots diverge in a circle. Leaves are long, linear or belt-like. Peduncles strong, from 50 cm up to 2,5-3,0 m, end with very long (sometimes up to 1 m) thick inflorescences of small white, cream, yellow, orange, pink stellate flowers, which during 2-4 weeks bloom in inflorescence from the bottom up . Blossoms eremurus in May or June-July, depending on the species and variety. After flowering, the aerial part of the plant dies. Fruit is a spherical capsule, seeds quickly lose their germination.
This light-loving, drought-resistant plant, it is harmful excessive moisturizing and winter dampness. In natural conditions eremurus receive moisture only in the spring with melting snow and in summer during rare rains. A similar regime should be observed in culture. For winter, shelter is required, both from frost and from moisture.
Plant eremurus in elevated sunny places. The soil needs a well drained, rich in organic, with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction. Acidic soil does not tolerate eremurus. For better drainage, fine gravel and river sand are added to the soil, and humus for humus. At the end of the season, the lower part of the root system dies off, and a new one grows from the top, that is, the plant seems to stick out of the ground and may become frozen. Therefore, in the fall under the eremurus necessarily pour the soil, and around the root neck - large sand.
Reproduction and agricultural technology.
Erection is propagated vegetatively and seeds. Freshly picked seeds are sown under winter for a prepared bed or in a box that is left in the garden. Seedlings appear in the spring. In the beginning of summer they are thinned out. For the winter, grown plants are covered with lapnik, and next fall they are planted in a permanent place. Flowering seedlings on 4-5-th year after sowing. Rhizomes are divided and planted in September-October, in extreme cases it is possible in the spring. They divide very carefully, because the roots are fragile and the big bushes are very tangled. When planting on the rhizome should be at least two renal buds renewal. Planted to a depth of 8-10 cm, at a distance of 50-70 cm, at the bottom of the landing pit, sand and ash are poured in, and the root neck is covered with small pebbles or coarse sand.
In the early spring, the eremurus is fed with NPK complex fertilizer (40-60 g / m2), poured humus or compost (5-10 kg / m2). On poor soils before flowering, you can give ammonium nitrate (20 g / m2), the main thing is not to overdo it with nitrogen fertilizers. Under the winter superphosphate is introduced (30-40 g / m2).
To avoid acidification of the soil, in the spring around the bushes make ash (a half-liter jar on the plant) or water the soil with lime milk (1 a glass of lime for 10 l of water) - 2-3 l per plant. In spring, if the weather is dry, the plants are watered. Moisture is required until the beginning of flowering. After flowering, the ground part is recommended to be cut off.
For the winter make a ventilated dry shelter from moisture (for example, film, roofing paper). With the onset of frost, eremuruses are warmed with lapnika.
Varieties and species.
The world assortment totals about 40 species and hybrids of eremurus. Among the most popular, hardy and light in culture - Eremurus himalicus (Eremurus himalaicus) height 120-170 cm with white flowers. It blooms in May in the south - at the end of April; Eremurus of the mammothflower (Eremurus lactiflorus) height up to 150 cm, flower stalk reddish, milky-white flowers, inflorescence loose, blooms at the end of May; Echismon's Eremurus (Eremurus aitchisonii) height up to 2 m, flowers are bright pink, up to 5 cm in diameter, blooms in May; Olga's eremurus (E Eremurus olgae) height up to 2 m, flowers light pink, inflorescence very long, blooms in June-July.
One of the most beautiful is considered e. narrow-leaved, or bunga (Eremurus stenophyllus = E. bungei), height 150 cm. Its flowers are golden yellow with strongly prominent stamens, blooms in May-June. The biggest Eremurus powerful (Eremurus robustus), height up to 2.5 m, pink flowers, inflorescence of length 60 cm, blooms in June-July.
Easy in culture hybrids of Ruiter (Ruiter Hybrids) height 120-180 cm. They bloom in June-July. Cleopatra flowers are pink-orange; Pinocchio - yellow with cherry stamens; Obelisk - white with emerald; Emmy Ro - yellow; Roford - salmon with orange stamens; Romance - salmon pink. From the century before last hybrids are known Shelford (Shelford Hybrids) with a height of 120 cm: Isobel - flowers are pink with an orange tinge, Moonlight - light yellow, Rosalind - Pink. White Beauty - White.

EREMURUS IN CRIMEA…
For the first time I saw eremurus on an excursion in the botanical garden 25 years ago. And I immediately fell in love with them - the majestic candles of orange, yellow, pink color seemed to fascinate me. From what part of the world did they come to Crimea?
Can I grow the same ones? The staff of the garden invited me in August to purchase Cornedonian plants. Since then, I have been growing these amazing flowers.
Cornedonian eremurus resembles a starfish. The plant can withstand temperatures as low as minus 20°, but in very cold winters, I still cover it with mulch. In one place, eremurus can grow up to 7 years, and every year the size of flowers, the number, height and power of peduncles will increase. That's when all the amazing beauty of this plant is revealed!
The first shoots appear in me in early March, and magnificent flowering lasts from May to mid-summer. At this time, a delicious aroma hovers in the air - thin and delicate, attracting bees (eremurus is an excellent honey plant). It is desirable to divide the plant no earlier than the 4-5th year.
After flowering, in August, when the leaves dry, I dismantle the eremurus into separate cornedons of different sizes - from the standard to the smallest. Planting can be carried out up to stable frosts. The place needs to be sunny, well warmed up in summer. And the planting hole should be wide, so as not to damage the roots, 10-15 cm deep, without stagnant water. The soil is desirable to take fertile.
Eremurus is drought-resistant. The habitus of the plant with proper watering is chic: a rosette with foliage in turgor, the peduncle is powerful, tall, up to 1,7 m and above, but does not need support.
Eremurus can also be propagated by seeds, but their germination is low, and it takes 5-7 years to wait for flowering.
Our Crimean summer is characterized by low rainfall and high temperatures, which is very favorable for eremurus. But I think that this amazing plant is suitable for other regions with a more severe climate. Try planting this flower in your garden. I assure you that every year you will look forward to the flowering of an amazing exotic, giving delight and unforgettable impressions.

Once I ordered a plant according to the catalog, but the parcel arrived in the spring, and this is not a good time for planting an eremurus. Yes, and the rhizome was of poor quality, in general, it disappeared. A little later in the local market I was able to choose a good product and an interesting variety.
Planting and care Planted an eremurus in September. The place was chosen sunny and calm, where snow melts early and there is no stagnation of water. The landing pit was filled with garden soil mixed with loose compost (1: 1). She put the rhizome in the hole, lightly poured water with the addition of “Kornevin” and covered it with soil. In the spring appeared sprouts. Over the summer, he formed a small rosette of long leaves. There was no flowering, and at the height of the season the plant went to rest. Since this period was rainy, I covered the sleeping eremurus with a light plastic sheet. In late autumn, it was additionally insulated with marigold stems.
The plant survived the winter with a bang. Soon after removing the shelter from the ground, several peppy kidneys appeared, then turned into sockets. Caring for them came down to
loosening the soil, removing weeds, moderate watering in dry weather, fertilizing with complex fertilizer.
In that year, I did not see the flowers, because I accidentally broke a young flower stalk. And only for the third season I was able to enjoy the bright inflorescences! Gradually, several rosettes with spectacular flowers formed over which bees and bumblebees circled. In October, I usually cut off dried stalks. But next season I want to collect seeds from them and try to sow.

I want to share and transplant my eremurus to another place. When is it better to start? Is it possible to propagate it with seeds?
#
- Eremurus heavily tolerate transplantation, as when digging small long roots are damaged, the plants eventually recover for a long time, they may not blossom for a year. Delyu only if necessary, once in 6-7 years, at the end of August. I dig out the bush and move it under the canopy - dry for three weeks. I cut off the dry plant remains, divide the rhizome into parts, shortening the roots, and planted on a sunny, sheltered from the wind place.
Now you can propagate the eremurus only with seeds. I sow them right after harvesting (late in the autumn, under winter, as they quickly lose their germination) in tall boxes with loose soil. I fill up to a depth of 1 cm and hold until spring at a temperature of + 15-18 degrees, periodically spraying the crops from the spray gun.
In the spring, an insignificant part of the seeds is pecked, the rest in the summer (may even next year). A box with shoots at this time is carried to the greenhouse, watered. For the winter I mulch the soil with dry grass, leaves, I cover with a spunbond.
Next spring I plant seedlings in separate pots, I am tempering in the fresh air. After the death of young leaves (usually at the end of summer, perennial enters a period of rest), watering is reduced, I bring pets to the warmest place in the greenhouse and for the winter I again cover with lapnik. I'm going to the flower gardens for the fourth year.
