Last season, I harvested a tomato crop in a greenhouse and was upset - the fruits looked normal, but inside, next to the stalk, the pulp was dense, tasteless. I also had a bed of tomatoes planted in open ground - there the same variety had perfectly normal, juicy fruits. What happened to my greenhouse tomatoes?

Tomatoes of one kind, but grown in the open ground, are always tastier than greenhouses. The taste of fruit affects the content of sugars, organic acids, which, in turn, depends on the balance of mineral nutrition and compliance with the irrigation regime. With a shortage of light and heat, due to too generous application of nitrogen fertilizers and untimely watering, the fruits become either stiff or, conversely, watery. If the feeding is done strictly according to the instructions, watering the temperate, forming a bush, this will positively affect the flavoring qualities of tomatoes. Thus, the taste of fruits affects a lot of factors, and in your case, the optimal combination of them was in the open ground, and not in the greenhouse.

It should be noted that among gardeners there is an opinion that in greenhouse conditions the plant is so well provided for everyone that the biological meaning of taste is lost. In nature, the high palatability of the fetus is one of the factors that an animal must eat it. It, in turn, will spread seeds over long distances, and this ensures the distribution and survival of a particular species (population).
