Cultivation of onion-turnip from seeds in the first year. Mixed planting of onions and carrots
How to grow onion turnips from seeds - tips from an experienced gardener
I’ve been reading the site for the second year, and although I have been working for over 20 years, I make bookmarks in each issue - I note what I want to use in the garden this season and in the future. Summer residents write little about growing onion turnips immediately from seeds in the first year.
Of course, it is not as difficult to grow a turnip from seedling as from seed, but if there are such seeds, it means that the onion must grow in one season.
This year I tried to grow onions from seeds of two varieties, I liked the result very much, the next summer I will try four varieties. And now it's all in order.
In the spring I bought two bags of seeds of varieties Pink Flamingo and Surprise. On the labels it was written that in the first year a large turnip grows. At the end of April, at the dacha, I sowed the seeds in small boxes and put them in the greenhouse, covering with covering material. We live in Siberia - it happens, and in June it snows, and the first autumn frosts can hit in mid-August, so my little bulb grew in boxes in the greenhouse all May, and that May was cold and wet.

In the beginning of June it got warmer, I made two “brooks” of 3 m each, watered well and planted sprouts of onion seedlings as thin as strings every 10 cm (photo 1).
All summer I watered according to the weather, loosened between the rows, but did not spud, twice fed with purchased organic fertilizer. By the end of August, large, 6-8 cm in diameter, bulbs of dark red color (Pink Flamingo) and white (Surprise) grew. The feather was powerful, with a finger thick, I had to lay the feather on the ground myself, all the bulbs were on the surface - they stood like red and white lanterns.
On September 7th I removed all the onions, since on September 5th we had the first, but severe frosts. Another week, the onions were dried in the country house on the veranda, then we took him home and ate until January (photo 2, 3). In terms of storage, onion bulbs from seeds are inferior to onion from sevka, but they taste much better - tender, mild, very good for salads.
Mixed planting of onions and carrots
I also want to talk about a mixed planting of onions and carrots. When we put them on separate beds, plantings were damaged by pests. The onion began to grow, and then the feathers turned yellow and dried up, while pulling in the onion, white worms were observed - the larvae of the onion fly, such a bulb could only be thrown away.
When digging in carrots, traces of a carrot fly were also visible - holes, larva moves, but the carrots still grew. We do not use kerosene, salt and chemistry. Therefore, this season they decided to plant onions and carrots in mixed beds.
On May Day holidays, with the help of my husband, I made two beds 70 cm wide and 6 m long, and the sowing began. Sow a row of carrots, a row of sevka and again a row of carrots, a row of sevka, etc. - after 15 cm. On each bed I got 17 rows of carrots and 18 rows of carrots.
I want to say that I soak the sevka in a dark potassium permanganate solution for 30 minutes and immediately plant it in the ground, and we paste carrots on toilet paper ribbons. My mother is retired, in April she is engaged in pre-sowing preparation of carrots. First, it pours the seeds of carrots into a glass of water, throws up the pop-ups, and glues the settled ones on the bottom on ribbons 2-3 cm wide and 70 cm long - this is the width of the future garden beds. Glues one seed after 4-5 cm on a starch paste.
When sowing with such ribbons, it is important to observe three rules: before sowing, it is good to water the rows, to lay the ribbons in raw rows with seeds down, and to sprinkle the soil on top, and most importantly - keep the bed with crops in the wet state until the carrots sprout. This is easy to do. If you live in the country from the beginning of the season, then wet the rows with carrots every day.
And if you are a working summer resident, then after sowing, cover the bed with a thin covering material, but not with a film. The land will be wet until your next visit. This method of sowing carrots saves time in the spring, when planting, and in the summer it is not necessary to thin out. We have been sowing carrots for more than 10 years and we always have a big harvest.
This season, in a mixed planting, onions and carrots protected each other from pests. The harvest was excellent! In early August, I pulled out all the onions from the beds. After drying, it turned out 4 large buckets - grade Stuttgart Riesen (photo 4).
I spud carrots so that there are no green “shoulders”. She felt freedom and began to gain strength, and in mid-September I dug up 10 large buckets of great carrots! All grew large, smooth, without flaws.

Carrots and onions for the whole season, I did not feed them even once, just in the spring when preparing the beds I well seasoned the soil with humus, and this was enough for a good growth of vegetables. Watered as necessary, loosened and weeded. In the next season, too, I plan to sow in mixed beds.
I wish all summer residents good health in 2017, love for the land, and most importantly - not to be afraid to experiment in their beautiful country house!

In our family, a way of planting onions for the newspaper has long been used. To do this, we collect all the newspapers that have accumulated over the winter in the house, we moisten them with water under a tap and fold them over the 6-8 layers. We sprinkle fertilizer on the garden, dig it, harrow it and spill it well with water from the watering can. We lay out on it "glued" water sheets overlap, so that there is not left a gap. Knife do in the newspaper holes at intervals of 5-7 cm. Between the rows leave the distance in 10-15, see. In the holes we plant the onion black cherry. After planting, fill the garden with a compost layer 3-5 cm. The tops of the onions completely do not fall asleep, they must stick out of the ground.
Newspapers perfectly retain moisture in the ground and do not allow the germination of seeds of weeds. As a result, the garden does not require weeding, and the bulbs on it grow large and juicy.

Was the bow turned yellow before the time?
I have often happened that the bow planted on a feather or a head began to turn yellow in the spring or early summer. What is happening to him? How can this be avoided? It seems that I do everything according to the rules, but here such an attack. Help not to remain without harvest!

Perhaps the blame of the onion fly, various diseases, the lack of nitrogen. Find out what exactly influenced onions is very difficult, so strictly adhere to a number of rules. On the garden bed, do as far as possible from the place where the culture grew last year. Seeds before planting, hold in a solution of manganese for at least 12 h. Next to the onion plant carrots, which will scare away the pest insects. By the way, onions similarly act on pest carrots.
When the onion is thrown out the pen in 4-5 cm, water the beds with a saline solution: 200-250 g salt on a bucket of water. Irrigation spend once in 3-4 weeks, and try not to fall on the greens. Do water with water rarely, but use a lot of moisture. With such a system, the threat of decay of plants is reduced. Feed the planting with slurry. A couple of times per season, pollinate the garden with ash or tobacco dust. All this will help almost completely solve the problem of yellow feathers. As a result, the yields will increase significantly, the onions will be better stored.
