Cabbage in the Southern Urals - advice on planting and care
Cabbage in the open air
I would like to share my experience in growing cabbage. Of course, there is nothing special for experienced gardeners, but newcomers to the gardening business also read you, and maybe they will learn something useful for themselves. I just want to note right away that my method is suitable for growing a small amount of seedlings - a maximum of a couple of tens of roots.
Well, I'll start in order. When dealing with cabbage, it is important that the selected varieties or hybrids give more or less the same head by weight, which helps to predict the volume of the crop. For example, in the first years of my truck farming, I planted (for pickling) such famous old varieties as Slava, Belorusskaya, Moscow later.
By taste, they are not bad, but it was too differently-sized to give out heads. For example, in the same Moscow, the latest spread was from 3 to 10 kg. So I racked my brains every year, how many plants to plant. But the last four years I grow a hybrid Megaton F1, and more I do not need to play in the soothsayer: the heads are gaining at least 6 kg, and if there are any deviations, then only in the big direction.
Therefore, I now plant no more than 15 pieces, which are enough for salting and food. Cabbage is simply excellent: dense, does not crack, with a small stump.
And the seeds of this hybrid are already sold, so you can not bother with their presowing preparation. Seedlings I grow in liter plastic bags from under dairy products. True, I consider such a volume too large (the land can not be seized) and therefore make them narrower. How?

On the one hand I iron the packages with a hot iron through paper. The building gets the cups-cylinders with a diameter of 8-10 cm and a height of about 20 cm. I fill them with earth for 9-10 cm, and the remaining edges are tucked.
Seeds are planted in the first decade of April with the expectation that seedlings before embarkation into the soil should be between the ages of 30 and 40 days. In the center of the cups I make grooves in 1,5 cm, I put seeds there, fall asleep, carefully watered and covered with a film.
Until the shoots appear, the glasses stand in the room, but as soon as the cotyledons begin to unfold, the seedlings move to the unglazed balcony. So almost from birth cabbage grows in the open air. But, of course, here I am guided by the weather. If the temperature at night is higher than 10 °, then everything is in order. If they predict a drop in it or a strong wind, I temporarily plant the seedlings into the room.
So cabbage grows slowly until the middle of May (photo 1). Care routine: watered as necessary, once I introduce a special fertilizer, as I grow, I pour the soil so that the plants do not collapse and do not break.
The secret of delicious cabbage
Meanwhile I'm preparing a garden. Since I only plant in one row, I make it not wide (60 cm), with earthen edges, so that water does not flow out when watering. In the holes I add a glass of ash and a couple of liter cans of humus, all mixing with the soil. Scissors cut the packets with seedlings (photo 2), I put the earth cylinders in the holes and fall asleep with the ground.
It is important in this case not to damage the growth point, otherwise instead of one big head, many small ones will grow up.
Plants planted with an interval of 70 see. I plentifully water the entire garden and cover plants from the sun for five to seven days.
Yes, by the way, somewhere in the three or four weeks before the cabbage planting, I seed the dill with the lines so that each of them is exactly in the middle between the heads (see figure and photo 3).
As the dill grows, I pull it out for food, and the remaining one grows on seeds and, in passing, it scares off the pests with its odor. As for the timing of harvesting, I do not follow the recommendations to cut off cabbage for pickling only after the appearance of frost. It even happened that the very big heads were cleaned at the end of August, and among them, among other things, it turned out an excellent sauerkraut!
I think that to get a good harvest of this crop you need to observe only two conditions: to provide a lot of light and a lot of water. No shading, even in principle, should not be, because the sun allows cabbage to store the necessary supply of sugar, without which during the harvesting will not be good fermentation.

Well, the abundance of moisture gives the heads a richness. While cabbage grows and grows heads, I water it twice a week. I start to sing it less often, only when the heads are already formed.
And a few words about fertilizers. From May to mid-July, every 10 days I water the infusion of fermented grass (1 liter per 10 liters of clean water). And at the end of July and once in August - with a solution of mineral fertilizers (for 10 liters of water in a matchbox of potassium sulfate and superphosphate, and then 1 liter of solution for each plant). Sometimes I replace them with an infusion of ash (a liter can of 10 liters of water).
I think there is nothing difficult in this, everything is possible even for novice farmers, and the result is looking at the photo 4.
