Variants of a flower bed with astilba
Astilba in translation from Greek means "brilliant", and indeed, this stable perennial with minimal care looks dignified, especially during flowering. And if earlier this plant could not boast of a variety of varieties, today there is such a variety that only one astilba can create colorful, expressive compositions
It is difficult to say exactly how many varieties of Astilba exist now around the world, according to various sources - from 200 to 250 varieties. Which, you see, is a lot. But it all started a long time ago: Lemoine started working with this plant, using for crossing Astilbe Japanese (Astilbe japonica) and Astberg of Thunberg (Astilbe thunbergii). Of those, the very first varieties have reached us Rubella, Plumet Neigeux, Gerbe de Neige, Mont Blanc.
The last two can even be found on the market or from breeders, if very searching. And it makes sense to look: these varieties are really worthy of attention. Another breeder, who made a serious contribution to the varietal replenishment of Astilba - German Arende, he was able to get 84 varieties, it was he who diversified the color range and significantly extended the flowering period.
It was he who first created the late varieties - his Fanal and Serenade blossom in early autumn. At the beginning of the 20th century, Dutch breeder Reis started work, he created 20 varieties, some of which still remain popular - America, Gloria Purpurea, Prof. Van der Wielen.
Now there are 12 groups, differing in height from very tiny to quite high; in terms of flowering - from the earliest, blossoming in June, until very late, opening at the end of summer and early autumn; by the size and color of the inflorescence, the color of the foliage. If you select varieties of different flowering period, you can get a continuous flowering of different specimens, replacing each other, from early summer to autumn.

The largest group - Arends hybrids (Arendsii hybrida), it includes cultivars and forms of hybrid origin. They are plants up to a meter high, with a spreading form of a bush, leaves twice or thrice-like, dark green, small flowers of various colors (white, pink, red, purple), collected in openwork inflorescences.
Blossom in the second half of summer, during the month. Interesting varieties: Amethyst - up to 80 cm tall, light lilac flowers, collected in a narrow, dense inflorescence, blooms in July and blooms for 30 days; White gloria - the same height, with snow-white inflorescences, a diamond-shaped flower blooms in July during the month of Glut - a height of 75 cm, leaves are no-green, with a brownish knot, veins and petioles reddish, blooms bright red, blossom in August.
Another large group - hybrid astilbe, it has about 50 varieties; it includes those varieties that cannot be distributed in other groups. The varieties of the group Low hybrids of Chinese astilbe are very beautiful; although this group is not numerous, each variety is good in it! The most famous - Superba and Pumila They are dismissed later than usual, in late August - early September.
Their fluffy, dense inflorescences stand out vividly against the background of other plants, and after the blossoming, their brown inflorescences look attractive. Another plus - they can be used to design rocky hills.
Astilba planting options in the flower garden
FLOWER WITH ASTILBA 1 - “CLASSIC GENRE”
The composition shown in the photograph is executed as a department, when tall plants are located in the background, low ones are in the foreground, and medium-sized plants are planted between them. If you plant plants close to each other, but not too close so that everyone can grow and develop normally, and even mulch the soil around, weed can be forgotten.
FLOWER WITH ASTILBA OPTION 2 - “JUICY COLORS”
Astilba is good in any garden, it looks advantageous in a single landing, and in small groups, and as part of a mixborder. About her we can say that she is friendly - to find her neighbors is not difficult. In the photo below, the low Pilila astilbe looks very good.
The bright pink spot of Astilba is in harmony with the rich pink of Echinacea, the pink inflorescences of Japanese spiraea. It looks very laconic, but also not boring: nuance on the color of the inflorescences, but the contrast is in the form of bushes and inflorescences. This small flower garden will look great throughout the season, because the plants used in it are stably decorative: from early spring, when their foliage dissolves, and until late autumn.
In the composition, a fan maple is planted, which in our central part of Russia does not winter very well, to put it mildly, it can be replaced with red-leaved varieties of maple, and if you want openwork, you can plant Manchurian maple.

4.Today, Astilba has so many different varieties that you can create colorful compositions only from this culture.
5. Purple and lilac astilbe look beautiful together with phlox and asters of the same color - interesting compositions are obtained.
6. Low, compact grades of astilba are good for miniature compositions: they look great all year long, from early spring to late autumn. In addition, these crumbs can decorate rocky slides in the shade.
7. Who said a flower garden in the shade is boring? Look how good the composition is located on the background of the Diabolo vesicle: white astilbe, variegated astrantia and blue crested crest.
8. In the shady garden, Astilba can play the role of a bright color accent. In the presented photo, the bright pink astilba looks especially bright due to the pendulum pinpoint planted in the background.

ASTILBA - PLANTING AND CARE, GROWING - TIPS AND REVIEWS FROM FLOWERS
Astilba is a bright panicle - it is as if embroidered from silk
Multi-colored inflorescences in the form of silky panicles, which crown the astilba bushes, are able to decorate any area, giving it an exotic look. Unlike the true exotic southerners, this plant is not afraid of our winters. This is explained by the fact that its most popular species come from fairly harsh regions, where under natural conditions almost 40-degree frosts withstand. And we can, without fear for the life of astilba, grow it in the open field.
Not afraid of the cold
The task of a successful wintering is simplified by the extinction of the aerial part with the onset of cold weather. It is enough to cover the location of the roots with a layer of organic mulch (sawdust, peat, dry grass, fallen leaves), and next spring new strong shoots will appear. True, young bushes better cover coniferous spruce branches. At one place, this perennial can grow to 20 years.
Note
Astilba prefers areas with medium shading. Plants feel well under the canopy of trees, and this allows them to be used for decoration of those places where other representatives of the flora look depressed.
"Portrait"
Among the varieties of which there are more than 200, there are dwarf, no more than 10 in height, cm, and
Ganty ", reaching 2-meter mark. The plant has straight, vertically growing stems with feathery leaves. The rhizome is woody, branched out. An interesting feature of astilbe is that new roots with buds are formed above the old ones, they are often selected to the surface, and this requires annual soil dressing to the base of the bush.
Popular species and varieties of astilbe
Arendsa - a hybrid view, bushes reach a height of 1 m. Branches are branchy, the crown is round or in the shape of a pyramid. Inflorescences are painted in white, lilac or shades of red. It blooms during July-August. Variety Amethyst belonging to this species has inflorescences of pale lilac color.
Chinese - this species has both undersized (15–20 cm high) and tall (up to 1 m) varieties. The first bloom in August-September, the second in June-August (depending on the variety). The flowers are small, light purple, collected in long cone-shaped dense panicles 30-35 cm long.
Interesting variety Hip-hop with unusual flowers: they have pinkish-white petals and rich red stamens. Plant height - up to 65 cm.
Japanese - height is not more than 80 cm. Flowering occurs in July. The flowers are white or pale pink. Differs in cold resistance. The most interesting Montgomery variety with dark red lush inflorescences.
Thunberg - plants up to 80 cm high. Flowers bloom in July-August. The inflorescences are racemose about 25 cm long. In Straussenfedder cultivar they are drooping, coral in color.
How to grow astilba?
Astilba can be propagated by dividing the rhizome, cuttings and seeds. The first method is the simplest and most effective. They dig a bush and cut the rhizome into several parts. Each dividend should have 2-3 buds and a branch of the root 3-5 cm long. They are planted in fertile soil at a distance of 30-50 cm from each other and watered abundantly for 10-12 days. It is better to do this in early spring, then flowering will come already in the current season. If the spring is cold, it is worthwhile to stretch a cover of non-woven material over the landings.
Both other breeding methods require a lot of trouble. Green cuttings root in the greenhouse, maintaining high humidity and regularly ventilating. To grow seedlings from seeds, stratification is required for 3 weeks. Sowing is carried out in early March, picking - after the formation of the first pair of true leaves.

In old specimens of astilba rhizome in the middle of the bush lignified - shoots do not grow here. In addition, the rhizome grows annually upwards, rises and after a few years along with the kidneys it appears above the surface of the earth. In this case, the kidneys can suffer greatly due to the heat in summer or frost in winter. As a result, flowering will not wait or it will be very weak. Therefore, 4-6-summer plants divide in September.
For reproduction, use only young parts of the rhizome, and remove its center. The seedlings must have at least 3-x kidneys at the base of the roots.
Spread the bushes at a distance of 30-40 cm from each other. Astilba grows well and blooms on slightly shaded areas.

Astilba faded. Now the plant has an unsightly appearance. Do I need to trim the peduncles?
#
Astilba blooms from June to August, depending on the variety and place where you grow it. The more sunny inflorescences wilt much faster than in a shady or semi-shady. In general, I must say that the main preferences of this plant are a semi-shady habitat and an abundance of moisture. This can prolong the period of decorativeness. But sooner or later - at the end of flowering - a beautiful plant loses its presentable appearance.
Even if you plan to get seeds from a plant, it's enough to leave on the bush one panicle somewhere in the background. Astilba seeds are very small, and from one peduncle they are quite sufficient for sowing. But the plant after pruning all the forces will go to build up the root system, which will allow the bush to grow, it is better to resist disease and pests. Crop - do not hesitate!

In March, I bought the Astipa root, but since I was still in the garden for a long time, I planted it in a large pot of good earth and set it on the windowsill. She quickly moved into growth and gave even flower shoots. But then the leaves began to fade, skuikozhivatsya, and now it looks pretty bad. I do not know whether to land it now in the ground, or at first it needs a little cure.

The cause of the wilting most likely lies in the root system. The plant started growing too quickly, not having time to take root. And the flower shoots drained the already weak root system. Another reason is also possible - you flooded the plant, and the roots began to rot.
It is unclear what state it is now in, but you can still try to save it. To do this, get the plant out of the pot, and carefully examine the root system. If the roots are alive - they have not rotted, it is necessary to trim the entire ground part and transplant the plant into the ground, having previously held an epin-extra or other biostimulant in solution (in accordance with the instructions).
