Climatic zones and selection of seedlings - a memo to the gardener and the gardener

What are the climatic zones - the choice of plants for planting
It is believed that the climate of most of the territories of our country is not very suitable for fruit gardening, and yet the wonderful gardens are green not only in the southern and black earth zones of Russia, but also much further north - in the non-chernozem belt, in the Urals and Siberia.
However, here gardeners have to take a more rigorous approach to the selection of regionalized varieties of fruit and ornamental trees and shrubs.
And for this it is necessary to know to which climatic zones your area and the selected plant belong. Zones are determined by the average indicators of the minimum temperature possible in a given territory in winter. In total, according to this classification, there are fourteen zones, our country "occupies" nine of them.
In the comfort zone
Does your garden expect to replenish? Thermophilic exotics should be preferred to "local residents" - zoned seedlings will bring less trouble and will do more good.
Numbers of zones manufacturers sometimes point to packages or labels of seedlings (more often - imported production), do not miss this information. However, in addition to winter temperatures, there are other factors that affect the viability of the plant: the duration of a light day, the total number of sunny days, the humidity of air and soil, the direction of the prevailing winds. And within the same zone conditions can vary significantly.
Therefore, Russian experts advise to pay attention also to the tolerance regions specified in the "State Register of Selection Achievements Admitted to Use".
Altogether there are twelve districts: North, North-Western, Central, Volga-Vyatka, Central Black Earth, North Caucasian, Middle Volga, Nizhnevolzhsky, Ural, West Siberian, East Siberian, Far Eastern.
Here, in the State Register, it is indicated where a particular variety or hybrid was bred (for example, the Minusinsk Experimental Station for Horticulture and Melon Farming, NIICH of the Far North or Primorye Agricultural Institute), which means that it was created for a specific place of growth, taking into account specific Features of this region (for example, high humidity due to the proximity of the ocean - in the Far East, early and severe frosts - in Siberia, high snow cover and short summer, but a long day of light - in the North), and it is here that the most reliable and stable
The pursuit of the southern "sissies" is a waste of time.
Even if the plants take root, they will not show themselves in all their glory: ornamental trees and shrubs will be small, stunted, painful, they will become poorly blossomed (or not at all), and fruits such as apple trees will turn out to be small and not as sweet as expected from the declared variety.
It is important not only where the variety was harvested and for which region it was intended, but also the place where the seedlings were grown.
Since in the warm regions of the country the seedlings are cheaper and lighter, some Russian companies transfer their plantations there. And the European plants are most often grown in Italy and even in Africa. For southern regions of our country, such plants, "spoiled" with heat and sun, will do, but planting them in the middle lane and north will be extremely difficult.
Therefore, it is most reliable to prefer "neighbors" - seedlings grown in nurseries located near your garden.
