How to grow hawthorn in the garden
Clinical case
I want to talk about hawthorn. This is one of my favorite plants in the garden. You could say, my friend. I generally like and adore all kinds of "thorns" (maybe this is due to the fact that I'm Capricorn by the zodiac).
But 10 years ago when the bush was brought from the nursery, I had no joy. My men bought a seedling quite an adult, with a height of more than 1,5 m, and with thorns - it means it has already bloomed, because the species has blood-red (and this was it) thorns appear after the first flowering. And it’s already the end of May in the yard - where to plant it? Do not take root. But to argue was useless: if the men decided to plant a tree, no one would stop them, so they wanted to - and that’s it.
Planted. As I expected, the plant with all its appearance demonstrated that the patient is more likely dead than alive. I looked at this wrecking and swore quietly. And the men rushed to water it. Well, well, I think that no matter what the child was amusing ... And she didn’t touch this matter anymore.
So the summer passed, and by the fall it became clear that the patient is still more likely alive than dead. And in the spring, even his buds started to grow (though, barely). Here I could not stand it any longer and rushed to look after him - I watered, fed a little bit of ash, bird droppings and organic matter. In the third year, the patient fell into thought.
It was evident that he could not decide in any way whether he should grow or not. In order to push him to the right choice, I applied shock top dressing: at the end of October, just before the snow, I planted a whole glass of urea in 1,5 liters of water and sprayed the trunk, kidneys and branches. Why so late? And she waited for the kidneys to be in a solid state, because I was afraid to burn the plant.
In the spring, a surprisingly good increase was observed, and in the summer I noticed large berries in dense foliage.
Since then, the crops have gradually increased. Now my blood-red hawthorn gives 40-50 kg of gorgeous berries, which are well kept in a cool place for up to two months in fresh form. Of course, all this can not be recycled, so I sell some of the crop in the market, and the profit turns out to be very decent even {I'm letting this money in for the purchase of seeds and seedlings).

6 useful tips for growing hawthorn
That's my friend is growing in the garden. I always, when I leave the house, bring him something delicious. He especially respects banana and orange skins, potato peelings, manure and grass.
And he likes me - the berries are large and tasty. He has only one drawback: it is painfully scratchy, even scared to watch. But this does not bother me, because in nature all the most useful and beautiful is always “biting”. And I’m shooting the crop like this: I’m laying a film under a tree and shaking the trunk. And so several times.
In spring and autumn, I thin out the crown a little - I remove the branches that grow inward. Pests have not yet been observed.
And also my little hawthorn began to appear small "babes" of ripe berries, which fell to the ground and sprouted. And the most pleasant thing is that they retained all the signs of the mother plant. I plant them on a fertile patch, and then I give to all comers. And readers want to give some advice from their own experience.
- Hawthorn saplings should not be taller than 1 m, otherwise it will not be easy to get accustomed to, or even completely die.
- We must plant immediately to a permanent place. Since the roots go deep, then do not transplant. And more here one must bear in mind that the adult hawthorn has a lush crown, so it would be nice to think in advance about not being cramped.
- Pits under the seedlings I cook just like under apple trees, with the addition of humus, ash and chicken manure. I tie the tree after the planting to the pegs.
- The main thing in dealing with hawthorn is not to rush. In the first two or three years, it may not grow up at all, because at this time it is building up its roots.
- For the winter I protect trunks from mice and bunnies with a plastic mesh, spreading additionally around a piece of dog hair or cloth with tar.
- If after three years the hawthorn still does not grow, add a shock dose of urea fertilizing, which I wrote about above.
Hawthorn in the garden - healthy recipes
And now about the most important thing: hawthorn is a real natural pharmacy. Its berries are extremely healthy.
Especially valuable in this sense is the appearance of blood-red (if I am not mistaken, all the healing infusions that are on sale are made from its fruits). I used to have problems with my heart and blood pressure, and many of the medicines prescribed by the doctor, I could not take - the body did not absorb them. But the berries of hawthorn, which are good nutrition for the heart muscle, came up to me. And now I feel very good!
My prescription for a healing drug is this: I take 1 art. l. berries of hawthorn and dogrose, 3 st. l. dried apricots, pour it all 1 l of boiling water and insist for 3 h. And then I drink this infusion instead of tea (also very tasty, by the way). If you do so at least one winter, in the spring forget where your heart is!
I also collect hawthorn flowers - also a very valuable medicinal raw material. It is only necessary to take those that are in the stage of half-dissolution, there will be no sense from the ones who have blossomed.
All collected dry land in the shade for several days, and then pour into canvas bags and gradually add to regular tea. Such flower additives as sedative and sleeping pills act. And the same fruits I always eat fresh when I work in the garden and orchard. And my kids also relish them. In short, I advise everyone to plant this useful tree in the garden, because medicines are so expensive now, and it’s not a fact that they will help you. Hawthorn is a long-liver, healer, breadwinner, and indeed a very beautiful plant.
By the way, and the dog rose also from the bottom of my heart I advise you to put somewhere in a little corner, it will not be superfluous.

CULTIVATION OF A HAWTHORN: PLANTING AND CARE, TIPS AND FEEDBACKS OF FLOWER GROWERS
HAWTHORN DEFENDER
Hawthorn thorns sometimes frighten the owners of the garden: they tear clothes, scratch the skin. But if you land it tightly, you get an impregnable wall from unwanted passers-by. And the fruits of the plant are the first remedy that normalizes the work of the heart, tones the body and improves immunity. Why not a protector and friend ?!
LANDING AND CARE
You can plant hawthorns in autumn and spring, and with closed roots in summer.
For a tree, a lighted place is desirable.
When creating a hedge, the distance between the seedlings is about 1 m. After a few years, the plantings will close.
Placing it alone, you need to retreat 3 m from other plants or buildings - for the full development of the crown, lush flowering and the formation of fruits.
Before planting, the soil is dug onto a shovel bayonet. The depth and width of the pit is 5-7 cm more than the root ball.
In an area with heavy soil, where there is a risk of water stagnation, drainage from rubble or broken brick is made at the bottom of the pit.
The root collar is not buried - it must remain at ground level.
Having planted a plant, the soil must be compacted and watered well, spending at least a bucket, and then mulched with peat or humus with a layer of 4-5 cm.
BUST:
Often when buying a seedling, you can see that parts of the roots are cut off or torn off. This is not critical. Indeed, even in young plants, the root system penetrates to a great depth, and it is very difficult to dig them out without damaging them.
REFERENCE
In culture, B. ordinary (Crataegus laevigata) of the Pauls Scarlet variety is more common - a low, lush shrub. A real decoration of the site! From trees - B. soft (C. submollis) with a wide crown. For planting, you can use 1-3-year-old seedlings with well-developed roots.

To treat diseases of the cardiovascular system, as well as to normalize the level of cholesterol in the blood, I use hawthorn berries.
A glass of boiling water requires 1 tbsp. l young fruits. Cook them on low heat until the liquid is boiled in half. I take 0,5 tsp. 3 times a day before meals. The course is 3-4 months.
In hypertensive diseases and nerve overload, it is better to use the infusion. 1 Art. l dried berries pour a glass of boiling water, insist 2 hours in a dark place, strain through gauze fabric. Consume according to 1-2 Art. l 4 once a day before meals.
For the treatment of angina, you must take on 6 Art. l dried hawthorn berries and motherwort grass, pour 7 cups of boiling water over them, cover them with a blanket and let them stand for 24 hours Then strain the infusion, and squeeze the hawthorn berries with gauze. Keep this tool must be in the refrigerator. Take 3 X-NUMX once a day.

the hawthorn, which I grew from the cutting, suddenly began to dry out, the leaves curled, it did not bear fruit. What is this disease? How to help him?
#
I would like to ask the readers to tell in detail about the growing of hawthorn. I'm interested not only in information on how to prepare a place for planting, and about fertilizing, but also how to properly place the seedlings, so that they turned out to be a hedge. And, of course, I would be happy with the recipes for using berries. Of course, I'm primarily interested in the opinion of those who grow or grow hawthorn with their own hands.

I grew a hawthorn from very small shoots sent from places of the Kursk-Oryol arc - my homeland, where a German cleaned us under a bulldozer. It’s scary to remember how much we endured! They went hungry for four days: the German took everything. In addition, he burned a haystack stocked up by his parents. And now I’m reading “Cottage”: some collect crusts of bread and put them in a barrel with manure to feed the plants — this is no good! Give better to the birds. But on this subject is enough.
Now it’s not bad for those who want to work on the earth. I have 6 acres, I grow everything I want, just enough. Hawthorn planted with manure, watered - started and quickly went up. In the third year it bloomed and yielded a crop. Now he is already six years old, about 3 m tall, blooms profusely, densely.
Berry picking - after a little frost. I collect them and dry them on batteries in candy boxes - very convenient. He has a lot of fans - everyone gets it: this is such a big crop every year.
And about the fence: plant more often and do not cut, it is very prickly. I deducted in the book on the treatment of plants that tinctures of flowers and fruits of hawthorn lower the excitability of the central nervous system, have a beneficial effect on the heart muscle, enhance the blood circulation of the vessels of the heart and brain, eliminate arrhythmia, somewhat reduce blood pressure, improve sleep and general condition of patients.

How is it easier to propagate the hawthorn blood-red? Is it necessary to cover young seedlings for the winter?
#
Hawthorn blood red is the most common species in the middle lane. This deciduous prickly bush (or small tree) is decorative in the spring, during flowering, and in the autumn, when the fruits ripen.
It can be propagated by seeds and vegetatively. The simplest way is by layering. In the early spring near the bush I dig out the grooves, lay flexible shoots in them (it is better to use one-year increments) and peg with metal staples so that a few kidneys (tops) remain on the surface. I fall asleep with soil, water, mulch sawdust. Plant young plants in autumn, when rootlets appear, or next spring - during this time, the root system has time to develop well, but for the winter it is necessary not to forget to soil the layers with soil. For young seedlings I prepare pits with a depth of 40 cm and a width of up to 50-60 cm, at the bottom I lay drainage on a quarter.
After planting abundantly watered, mulch peat, humus. During the season I loosen the soil around and apply fertilizers: the first time - during the bud blossoming (2 tbsp urine-wine / 10 l water), the second time - in the summer, until the appearance of fruits (2 tbsp nitrophosks / 10 l water). The first 2 year of the planted kids in case of a harsh winter is desirable to be wrapped with burlap, wrapped in two or three layers. In the future, hawthorn is frost-resistant.

Planted in the garden Altai hawthorn, which in nature grows in the foothills of Central Asia.
This species is “imprisoned” for poor, crushed, with a slightly alkaline soil reaction - just like ours. He needs fertilizing only in the first few years after planting, and then moderate. In the future, the long roots themselves find their food, although in the spring I still feed the tree a little with ammonium nitrate. It is remarkable that Altai hawthorn does not suffer from chlorosis on alkaline soil. On the contrary, when planting on fat soil with a neutral reaction, sand and chalk will have to be applied under it, and on acidic soil it will generally grow poorly.
At me the hawthorn grows remarkably, promising to turn to a tall tree. In nature this species reaches 8-10 m and lives very long. My still not large, but already fructifies. In the spring, the caps of white flowers bloom on it, orange fruit ripens towards the autumn. The fruits of the Altai hawthorn, like other species, are curative. I dry them and in winter I add a little tea.

Maksimovich hawthorn is one of the most precocious representatives of this species, by about mid-August the plant is strewn with bunches of orange berries. This is an excellent ornamental plant, the fruits of which are edible, and everyone knows about the benefits of hawthorn berries.
The hawthorn Maximovich has very velvety, soft leaves, quite large ones. From this bush you will get a good hedge, forming a dense green massif, or excellent solitary planting, yielding useful fruits.
