Growing gelenium in the flower garden - what you need to know about the flower
Gardeners have long included this plant in the list of favorites, it is always adored by the bee, and neighbors on the flower garden cherish close friendship! It is not surprising that breeders became interested in our hero and brought out varieties with a new coloring and a form of flowers. Let me introduce you, the familiar stranger helenium!
Helenium refers to those rare herbaceous perennials, which easily moved from traditionally rustic gardens to modern flower gardens.
What is the secret of such a dizzying "career" and popularity?
The decisive role was played, of course, by the lush and colorful flowering.
Beginning from the end of June until September, this unpretentious long-flowering plant brightens up the plantations with rich yellow, orange and red lights. Yes, and the growth of a bright, handsome man is necessary.
Quite often geleniums reach a height of 1.5 meters and more, which makes them ideal candidates for planting in the background of flower beds or along fences or walls.
It should be noted that geleniums of some varieties with powerful shoots, for example Rauchtopaseven the strong wind can not "lay on the shoulder blades".
The rest is still desirable support and a place in a quiet corner. Tip: to make tall plants more compact, in the beginning of summer you can cut their shoots halfway.
Thanks to this procedure, the flowering time also slightly shifts and comes on 3-4 weeks later. As an alternative, you should immediately look at the gelenium of low-growing varieties, for example, wine-red Rubinzwerg or yellow Wyndleywhose height barely reaches a meter.

On the care of gelenium
Care for a perennial is simple: he needs to provide a sunny place, ideally, without stagnation of dry air, because of which the flowers droop.
But if the plants are well watered, the head of Helenium bending its head in the heat will again come to life by morning and will gladden the eye with freshness and cheerfulness.
It is best suited for the humus-rich loamy soil.
Also our hero is desirable to regularly feed compost (1 l / m2) and complex mineral fertilizer - then the plant will bloom from year to year, without requiring division and transplantation. Is it necessary to rejuvenate a handsome man, he tells himself - if the bush in the center is bare, then it's time. In general, the plant needs to be rejuvenated every 3-4 year, since, having reached maturity, Helenium often freezes. And the last thing: on the eve of winter all the shoots can be safely cut off at the very bottom.
In the case of tall tall heleniums, for example, copper red Baudirektor Linne (130-150 cm), it is advisable to plant a number of lower-growing herbaceous perennials, for example, corescrews whorled (pictured), anaphalis, caterpillar showers or shrubs asters.
Helenium is an excellent option for a summer bouquet. But keep in mind that it is necessary to cut off the stems when the flowers fully open, because they do not dissolve in the water.

GELENIUM - AUTUMN SUNS IN THE GARDEN
Tall geleniums are my old love. It is difficult to fit these "giants" into a small flower bed, but it is easy to disguise an old fence or a gray wall of a house with them.
Autumn suns prefer loose, fertile, moderately moist soil. For abundant long flowering, two dressings per season with complex mineral fertilizer according to the instructions (at the end of April and at the beginning of August) are quite enough for them.
I prepare geleniums for wintering as follows: in October-November, I cut off the stems almost at the very ground and mulch with a thick layer of peat.
In my collection there are many varieties of tall handsome men. I'll tell you about the most interesting specimens.
Westerstede
It turns out that this variety is already 20 years old! Bushes up to 140 cm in height grow quickly and are resistant to bad weather. Flowers orange-red with a yellow ring appear in August.
Feuersigel
A real giant - it can grow up to 170 cm. The flowers are small, with an intricate color, but they delight the eye for a long time - from late July to mid-September. It is not afraid of cold weather, but it is better to cover old bushes for the winter.
Koenigstiger
One and a half meter handsome man in classic "helenium" colors - brown, yellow and red. In the sun, these shades become richer. Blooms in mid-August.
Flammenrad
This large-flowered helenium grows to a height of 160 cm.Orange-red flowers with a wide yellow ring appear in early August. Resistant to diseases and pests.

GELENIUM: BRIGHT COLORS OF AUTUMN
In September and early October, the neighbors admire my blooming autumn helenium. But they themselves do not plant: the main reason is that they do not know how to cover the "legs" of these rather tall plants, how to fit them into a small flower garden, and besides, the meager color palette is embarrassing. And for me, it’s far-fetched problems of gelenium allows you to choose plants with a height of 60 to 160 cm that are suitable for any area. As for the flowers, they are really only yellow, red and brown. But what rich and bright colors - you can't take your eyes off! For example, the Flamenco variety has large flowers of a pure, bright yellow tone with red strokes on the petals. The variety Goldreyf is not inferior to him in beauty with dark red petals and a golden border on their tips.
A modern assortment of varieties before the rainy season. But I buy seeds because my own seeds don't sprout very well. I sow them in October in open ground in pre-prepared grooves.
FEATURES OF THE REPRODUCTION OF GELENIUM
Autumn helenium does not have a root system that hibernates in the soil. After flowering, the roots and stems die off. In their place, new rosettes are formed (in the form of buds and a small root), which become independent. For the winter, I cut the plants to the ground and mulch with fallen leaves, straw, sawdust.
Without a transplant, helenium grows in one place for up to four years, after which the risk of freezing of wintering rosettes increases (the fact is that every year the buds come closer to the soil surface). I plant delenki in April-May.
Helenium can be propagated by seeds that are harvested in early autumn.
CARE
Gelenium has a superficial root system, so in the heat of summer planting, I must mulch with cut grass. In the dry season, watering is necessary, otherwise the leaves dry.
In spring and autumn I feed with mineral fertilizer for flowering plants.
For tall specimens, I put decorative props (in this case, the husband is a jack of all trades).
I cut off the faded baskets - then the helenium blooms more magnificently.
SUCCESSFUL COMPOSITION
Gelenium is harmoniously combined with a muzzle, a smoky frame of a zipper, a pike or a spore ball. Looks unusual when surrounded by vertical neighbors of a lilac color, for example, Chinese astilba. An excellent composition will also turn out with asters, cereals, rudbeckia, phlox.

HOW TO GROW HELENIUM IN THE AUTUMN GARDEN?
Not everyone likes to bend down to look at even the most spectacular flowers. Many people prefer to see them at eye level. Therefore, I am ready to offer fairly tall plants to decorate the autumn garden. For example, autumn helenium (Heienium autumnale). Like gaillardia, it belongs to the Asteraceae family. This unpretentious tall perennial is not called “autumn sun” for nothing. Its abundant yellow, red, brick-orange daisy flowers fit harmoniously into the garden and can decorate the area until frost.
The plant is very popular in Germany, where it is actively selected. The modern variety of varieties allows you to choose the shade of yellow, red, brown and their combinations, flowering time (from July to September) and select plants of the required height - from 50 cm to 160 cm.
The tallest variety, Feuersiegel, reaches 170 cm. Small light yellow flowers with fiery red strokes bloom from mid-August.
Flammenrad, 160 cm high, blooms at the very beginning of August. The flowers are large, orange-red with a wide yellow ring.
Rubin-kuppel - up to 150 cm, ruby-new red with a brownish tint to the leaves.
The color of Rauchtopas is unusual: the outer side of the petals is yellow, the lower side is red-brown. Blooms in early August. Height 150 cm.
Large flowers of deep red-terracotta color in the Claudia variety. Plant height 140 cm.
Amazing flowers with petals rolled into a tube from the Loysderwieck variety. The color is not easy to describe: pink-brown, and even the yellow inside of the tube is visible.
A variety with completely yellow flowers - Helena Gold.
Helena Red Shades 120 cm high, with red-brown flowers with a yellow border.
Very elegant, early flowering Biedermeier (Bidermeier) 100 cm high. The flowers are orange-brown with a wide golden ring.
The earliest low-growing varieties bloom in July. This is an old Windley (Wyndley) up to 60 cm high. Flowers with bright yellow petals and a dark brown center. And an even lower (50 cm) Ruby Tuesday with small ruby-red numerous flowers.
A very original variety, Autumn Lollipop, blooms in August-September. Its inflorescences look like soft chocolate-yellow pompoms. And only if you look closely, you can see tiny petals from below. Plant height is about 1 m.
Medium-sized (1 m) Moercheim Beauty with orange-red petals around a red-brown center and copper-red Indian Summer with a bright yellow center bloom in July.
The only terry variety Double Trouble is large, bright lemon with the same yellow center. Its sunny flowers on strong shoots 1 m high decorate the garden from July to October.
Pay attention to these beautiful plants. They are good when planted alone or in combination with others - for example, solidago or asters. If you need to decorate something low, then a thick helenium curtain will come in handy here. It seems to be not a flashy flower, but it is clearly not the last violin in the summer-autumn orchestra of colors.
CARE OF GELENIUM
The plant loves sunny places, but also feels good in partial shade. Prefers fertile, deeply cultivated neutral soil. Loves watering, but does not tolerate stagnant water.
Requires several fertilizing with organic matter or mineral fertilizers per season. Over time, the renewal buds of helenium rise higher and higher, and in order to avoid freezing of the plant, every 3-4 years it is necessary to mulch the base of the bush. In autumn, the shoots die off, and in their place a new rosette of leaves with roots is formed. Next year, it is this rosette that will give a new peduncle; to extend the flowering period of helenium, a classic technique is used.
In June, the tops of several shoots are cut off. “Decapitated” shoots begin to branch, and the buds on them bloom later. Heleniums are propagated by dividing the bush and sowing seeds. Seeds are sown in the ground in spring. They emerge together on the 14-20th day. In the phase of the first true leaves, seedlings dive at a distance of 35 cm. It is also possible to sow seeds before winter.

Gelenium needs to be regularly divided about once every 4 years. If this is not done, the center of the bush will gradually die off, and in one of the frosty winters the plant will die.
Usually the flower is divided in the spring (in April-May), but if necessary, this operation can be carried out in the summer (in August). The perennial will have time to take root well and overwinter safely.
If I decide to divide the gelenium at the end of summer, I don’t wait for the plant to fade completely. I cut the flower stalks, leaving stumps up to 30 cm high, and carefully dig out the bushes. The flower grows quickly, so I disassemble it into small pieces. I plant the parts in a new sunny place, moderately water and mulch with peat in a layer of 5-7 cm.
TIP: Break a flower bed for gelenium in a sunny area: if there is a lack of lighting, its flowering will not be so plentiful and bright.

Gelenium 'Biedermeier' (Helenium x hybrida)
Description. This is a variety obtained from the helen-mind of the autumn. In height it reaches up to 80 cm. Inflorescences-baskets in diameter up to 4 cm, bright yellow with saturated reddish strokes on petals; Tubular flowers (those that form the middle of the flower) are yellow. They blossom in early August and bloom profusely, continuously for a month and a half.
Agrotechnics.
Helenium - a juvenile plant; this means that you need to update the planting every 3 - 4 years. It feels best in well-lit areas (although it tolerates penumbra) with fertile, normally moist soil. In arid periods, plants do not forget to water, otherwise the bush may die. In the middle zone of Russia, it perfectly winters without any shelter.
Reproduction. It reproduces by dividing the bush (in May). When digging, the plant breaks up into separate small rosettes, so the division of helenium is not difficult.
Using. Excellent autumn plant. It looks best in the background of mixborders. In a single landing and a group monopodship, it looks interesting only at the end of summer - early autumn, when it blooms; all the rest of the time it's just a pretty nondescript green bush.
