Which planting of strawberries is better - autumn or spring: we ask a professional

Choose time for planting strawberries
Many gardeners are sure: for planting strawberries are preferable to fall (in August-September) planting - at this time there is more, since the terms are stretched for a month and a half, and the planting material is plenty, and in the soil warmed up over summer the bushes will take root more quickly. What do specialists think about this? The word - to the candidate of agricultural sciences, to the senior scientific employee Natalia KLAKOTSKOY.
I would not put the question squarely, what kind of planting is better - autumn or spring.
The fact is that for the regions of the central strip two terms are recommended - in April-early May and August-September. And both options are effective. Every gardener chooses the time that is convenient for him.
Much is tied up on watering.
For rooting, it is very important that plants do not experience moisture deficiency. In spring this is easier - the soil is saturated with meltwater. When spring planting, the plantation will have to be taken care of under the full program - loosening, watering, weeding, and berries will only be in the next year. But this will already be a full-fledged harvest, as the plants gain strength and power.
In the autumn planting, the berry requires less attention to itself, but it will be necessary to follow the watering more closely, especially considering how dry the August was in recent years. Another danger: if you do not keep within the time of planting, it is more likely that the bushes will not be able to take root, get stronger and freeze in winter. Although I know cases when lovers planted seedlings in October, and even in November. They assure that the plants have taken root. But this is more an exception than a regularity. Therefore, I do not advise so to take risks.

When an autumn planting is it worth it to expect a crop next year?
Berries will be, but a little. Therefore, it is best to stop the flower stalks, so that in another year it is already guaranteed to get a good harvest. In the spring planting, blooming in the same year, too, should not be "encouraged" - the flowers that appear should be removed.
It is believed that when propagating by the so-called mustache, plantation should be planted only with rosettes of the first and second order - those that are closer to the mother plant ...
They, indeed, will be the most powerful, strong. But for planting, I assure you, all rosettes are suitable. And if on the bush 30 outlets, boldly put everything into motion - this is a full planting material. The main thing is further proper care.
And how to propagate a variety that practically does not give a mustache?
Such, for example, is the sort of Referent. In this case, you can divide the bush into 3-4 parts, each of which must have a horn. The aerial part of the strawberry bush consists of annual horns with apical and axillary buds. In the horns a reserve of nutrients is formed, and it is in the horns that flower buds are laid, on which the harvest of the next year depends.
What mistakes when planting strawberries are most often made by beginners?
Introduce fresh manure under the planting, which is strictly forbidden! In this case, the root system burns. The second mistake is to deepen the heart (growth point). From it grow new shoots and flower stalks. If they are covered with soil, flowers will simply not be - and, as a result, strawberries will not yield. It's wrong and bad to strip the heart. It must be directly above the soil. If you plant a plant too high - pour the land to the roots. And vice versa: too deep - excavate, so that the soil was at the right level.
Proper planting of a strawberry bush - a reminder
1 - roots; 2 - too high landing; 3 - correct landing; 4 - too deep landing; 5 - growth point (heart); 6 - us; 7 - socket

Note: How the film failed
I constantly plant seedlings of strawberries in mid-August - so the plants manage to take root, and in the spring they begin to develop well.
The first of his beds, reading the literature, arranged on top of a black film. In the next season, the flower stalks stopped. And a year later a harvest was expected, which promised to be good. When the berries only began to turn red, the rains began.
Arriving at the weekend at the cottage, I almost burst into tears of vexation-large puddles spread over the film, in which the berries rotted. Only then I learned that when using a film, plant strawberries on the combs (and pull the film so that the water flows into the aisles).
Now the plants, if mulch, then straw. Among the bushes in the first year I plant a little winter garlic. And in the season, as soon as the berries are fastened, in the lowered areas under the sprigs for a safety net, I put plastic containers from under the products {upwards by the bottoms) - the water flows down and the fruits remain dry.
Autumn and spring planting of strawberries - reviews and tips from gardeners
Planting strawberries in November
“Do you know when I plant strawberries (strawberries)?” - I am interested in Vladimir TUMILOVICH. And, not waiting for my academic answer, he immediately surprises: in late autumn, in the cold, but not yet frozen ground ...
I can see by your eyes that you will object to me right now: they say that the autumn planting should be finished before the middle of September, so that plants can take root by winter, "grumbles Vladimir Grigorievich. - Only in this case next year you will get only leaves, there will be no berries. I've been planting strawberries for more than 10 years in the second half of October, and sometimes even in early November - for 1-2 weeks to steady frosts.
I always wondered why we plant trees and bushes in October, and strawberries in August, when sometimes there is a wild heat.
I am guided by the condition of adult bushes. After all, by late autumn they are already ready for unfavorable conditions. Their connection with the outside world is minimal, nutrients are accumulated as much as possible. Here in this state of relative peace and planting strawberries - I use formed rosettes of the first-second order.
After planting the bushes mulch peat or sawdust, no more hide.
Plants perfectly tolerate the cold. And the next season I eat berries. Of course, the harvest in the first year is still low. But much depends on the fertility of the soil. Therefore, I must add the dung when planting. In the spring (in April) I hide the rows between them, which I first dig.

WORD TO THE SPECIALIST
Of course, strawberries, which you plant in August, so that it is well established and growing, will have to pay attention until the end of the season: water, loosen the soil, weed. But by the beginning of stable frosts, it not only gets well, but also accumulates a sufficient amount of nutrients for the winter rest period. As a result, the plantation suffers less from freezing in the snowless winters, and in spring the strawberry "wakes up" faster and starts growing.
Podzimnya planting of strawberries is possible, but it must be mulched (as the author does), and in winter it is desirable to cover the bed with snow. Otherwise, significant plant attacks are possible.
As for the harvest, in the first year after planting the peduncles I advise to completely remove. Only in this case it is possible to get record harvests in the next two years.

Contrary to fears, this summer was quite fruitful for berries. But how worried they were in jackets even in June!
Particularly pleased with raspberries: not only enough to eat, but also boiled jam, compotes, froze.
Strawberries were smaller, but they did not count on much, since we have young beds. But the bushes did not hurt. I think the case is not only in new varieties, but also in the fact that the strawberries are not thickened, and in autumn after planting beds were filled with coniferous fallace. In the spring it was not cleaned. I decided that a small acidification of soil strawberries garden will be beneficial, and the smell of needles also scares off pests.
I want to share one secret of watering: among strawberries I plant bushes of daisies - only a few pieces. And I follow them: as soon as the flowers begin to droop, I pour strawberries. Has noticed, that since then became less rot. Just stopped pouring the plantation, because all the time it seemed that the plants do not have enough water.
I have a little experience of growing gooseberries. Once I noticed: the berries hang like scalded. At first I decided that the bushes struck some kind of disease. But an experienced gardener suggested that everything is in the bright sun. These two bushes were in the sun: on the south side were not protected. To transplant the grown-up plants to another place did not. It's just now I plant in front of them a kulis from corn in one row. The effect is stunning - the "illness" seemed to take off.
