(Physocarpus opulifolius) includes 14 species originating from North America (because of both American) and East Asia.

The first mention of its appearance in our area appeared at the end of the XVIII century. (1793), and along with the generic name Spirea (Spiraea opulifolia) then another, now forgotten, was used, - Neillia (Neillia opulifolia). At the end of the XIX century. decorative forms of the vesicle have already appeared - Yellow-leaved (luteus), golden-laced (aureo-marginatum) and dwarfish (nanus). We have two types: vesicle cannabis and ampullar vesicle. The former has a mass of ornamental varieties, the latter is found only in botanical collections. The remaining species, as they say, "did not catch on".

A distinctive feature of all cysticias is the shape of their leaves - they are similar to the leaves of viburnum, which gave part of the name (almost a middle name) to this plant. They are 3-, 5-lobed (or more), with a serrated-toothed edge.

The shrub got its name for its "bloated" fruits (from the point of view of botany - leaflets), changing their color from pure green to purple, very decorating plant closer to autumn. In the common vesicle, the flowers are white, and in the purple leaves pink. The yellow leaves are also white, however!

The original greenish form, of course, is good for its power, "inability" and wide application in mass landscape design. However, we will stop on the varieties that for a couple of centuries have been created by breeders and originators.

Let's start with the yellow-leaved varieties, as they appeared originally. So…

In the beginning, there was Luteus variety (Luteus or Aureus - "golden"), deduced in the second half of the XIX century. His foliage was, as the name implies, yellowish, which made it possible to create accents to ordinary or purplish decorative plants in the garden.

However, this old variety is much inferior to modern, including yellow-leaved. In particular, the solar areas are particularly good for a more modern grade Darts Gold (Dart's Gold), Luteus Nanus (Luteus x Nanus), which has been dubbed by Dutch breeders and which glows with internal sunlight, as if emitting golden arrows according to the name. Relatively recently (2008) appeared yellow-leaved grade Angel Gold. The tops of its shoots have a distinct red color. The Internet mentions a variety Coppertin with orange, like an orange, foliage. I have never met him in our country.

On the Internet, I came across such a name - “golden stitch”, but I couldn’t find the details ... Concludes this color range Diabolo d'Or. "Devil's Gold", and that is how it is possible to translate the name of a variety, differs slightly less intensity of the yellow color of foliage, especially manifested when the leaves are dissolved. However, the sensation of seemingly flashing tips of shoots is very attractive. Finally, there is yellow-leaved variety Harer (Nugget) American selection,

also with a more compact habit than that of the progenitor Luteus.

This is where the theme of the devil arises in our story, which lies in the details ... selection! It was through the works of the famous Cordes firm (yes, Cordes is not only roses!) That gardeners acquired an amazing variety Diabolo. The countdown for this achievement begins in 1998. This plant is truly devilish beauty - dark crimson, sometimes almost purple-black leaves just attract the eye.

And the flowers of a gentle pink color very much decorate and adorn it among the mass of other shrubs. And many more modern varieties of a bubble-fruiter have in the family tree of that very devil! The severity of diabolical beauty was slightly softened by French originators from the firm "Minier" (Minier), almost 15 years ago they created, so to speak, a light version of the devil called Diabolo d'Or (Diable d'Or), already mentioned above. Interestingly, it was obtained by crossing the Diablo variety with the old famous Darts Gold. That's for sure in small details, shades, transient nuances of the color of young and summer foliage, the devil lies in those that appeared in the XXI century. varieties of gallbladder.

And the hand to their creation was made by breeders of the Old and New Worlds.

Sort-namesake Andre (Andre) lighter, brighter, more saturated than the devil's ancestor, let's just say, more fun. Young leaves in dissolution paint the tops of shoots in a light crimson tone.

In the Diablo variety, flowering causes an amazing sensation - against a background of purple foliage, a scattering of pale pink inflorescences. This flowering holiday lasts for almost a month!

But the purple "devil" even in the shade under the outstretched branches of oak shows normal growth and acceptable purple foliage.

The bladder is good not only for spring and summer coloring of foliage (depending on the variety), but also on autumnal effects. So, in red-leaved varieties umbrella-shaped bundles of seed boxes serve as a decoration, including in winter. They are first purple, and then chocolate! In yellow-leaved they are reddish, which is also beautiful. Far from all bushes, the fruits that fall under the winter are so decorative, except for the rowanberry of rowanberry or some species of spirals.

And the foliage again gains color in the fall - whether it is the green original form, or red-leaved, or yellow-leaved - they turn red, everything turns yellow!

Of course, the very, very brightness and, if I may say so, “grade” vesicles show in the spring. Then the color of the foliage is muffled. And of course, the full color palette of foliage can only appear in conditions of sufficient lighting. The same Darts Gold shining in the sun turns into pale green in the shade. Don’t understand that ...

Reproduction of vesicle

Bubbles are easily propagated by seeds and no less than cuttings (green, before flowering using root formation stimulants), layering and dividing the bush. Sowing seeds is usually carried out in the winter. It should be added that cystic fibrosis also gives active self-seeding. Moreover, everything happens according to the monk Mendel, the founder of modern genetics: some of the seeds of the red-leafed form in me also give the original green form. It remains only to separate the "grain from the chaff" and transplant the devils to their permanent habitat. And the greens are also useful ...

Many colored varieties of the vesicle sometimes produce, "shoot", so to speak, with ordinary green shoots. They must be cut in a timely manner as close to the base of the bush. In the spring, sanitary pruning will be in demand: the removal of old, broken, thickening and frozen branches.
