Collection of miniature tulips
Tulips are not always huge gorgeous flowers on high peduncles.
It is also quite crumbs of 10-15 height, in which the tulips, far from infatuation with flowers, do not even suspect.
In this article you will find several portraits of the most interesting miniature tulips from my collection.
All species, which will be discussed, belong to 15 group, which unites natural, or so-called botanical, tulips. Theoretically, many of them can still be found in nature, but my entire collection was bought in Moscow and has, of course, Dutch origin. In total, I had about 20 natural species at different times, but I will tell only about the most interesting, in my opinion.
The unpretentiousness of miniature tulips is a myth
Wild species can actually be very moody and unpredictable. Although sellers of such tulips are very fond of advertising the lack of need for their annual digging. Like "planted - and no more trouble." Alas, this is not always the case. To begin with, many times absolutely healthy-looking bulbs of "savages", bought and planted along with all the others, I simply did not appear.
That is absolutely. Some species bloomed for one year, and then disappeared somewhere.
At best, they simply ceased to bloom forever, at worst - even leaves did not appear in the spring. All this is understandable, since not all wild species fit our climate. Many of them come from completely different climatic zones (mountain, steppe, southern species, etc.). And the conditions of our cottages are simply completely alien to them. Honestly, if I were asked from 15 groups of tulips to choose the most moody, then I would definitely choose here these most supposedly unpretentious "savages". " And I have something to compare, because at its peak my collection consisted of 450 varieties belonging to all groups.
As an illustration, I will tell you about two unusual, but capricious species tulips, which I have grown.
Tulip Turkestan (tulipa turkestanica).
Perhaps, of all the natural species that lived in my garden in different years, it is more difficult to recognize the tulip in it. His homeland is the world of Pa and Tien Shan, where he meets up to a height of 2500 m. His flower stem is about 15-25 cm in height with 1-7 flowers on short pedicels. Flowers in the form of white stars with a diameter of 3-5 cm, with a yellow patch at the base. It blooms very early, one of the first. Very gentle and unusual look!
In the first years grew and blossomed very actively, but then began to give a huge number of children and the flower ceased. Tried to dig it, but it did not help either. Every spring he gives a lot of leaves and not a single flower. Therefore, always with astonishment I read that this species in culture is very unpretentious and for a long time blossoms in one place. Alas, my experience speaks about something else.

Forest tulip (tulipa silvestris).
Another extremely unusual kind, the relationship with which I did not work out. He comes from European forests, and in theory, he, unlike the high-mountain Turkestan tulip, should be quite comfortable with us. But normally it bloomed with me only in the first year. This tulip is much higher than the rest of the "savages" - about 30 cm, with d drooping bell-shaped yellow flowers with a diameter of about 10 cm. It bloomed quite late, closer to the second half of May.
Alas, after the first blossoming that pleased me, he began to form some crazy number of stolons and eventually took an area of about 1 m. I tried to dig it out, but it never made me happy with a single flower. But the place where he grew up, is still clogged with its bulbs, which it is impossible to dig out, as he gives stolons not only in breadth, but also in depth.
About him, as well as about the Turkestan tulip, often written as a pro, very unpretentious and does not require a digging look. I read the advice that to prevent active vegetative propagation, the possibility of caring stolons is limited, inserting vertical plates or boards into the soil. When the whole space is filled with bulbs, the plants begin to bloom. Tried it. Did not help.
My favorite wild tulips
But enough about the bad. Let's talk about the good. Among the natural species and the varieties derived from them, there are quite stable, capable of pleasing you for many years with a steady flowering and admiring with its delicate beauty.
The tulip is late (tulipa tarda).
In my collection, it is unequivocally champion of unpretentiousness, although he came from the stony slopes of the Tien Shan and the conditions of the suburban dacha, according to the idea, should not suit him. Nevertheless, in one place it has been growing for years 12-13, continuing to bloom beautifully. And every year the number of flowers increases.
The height of this tulip is only 5-10 cm, the flowers are bright yellow with a white stripe along the edge, with a diameter of 5-7, see In the sun open in flat stars. Adorable and steady view! I read that his terry-colored uniforms were brought out. Want! Really want to!
Tulip Urumi (tulipa urumiensis).
About this tulip came from Iran, I read that in culture it is very difficult. However, I learned about this after years 10 of his cloudless life in my garden. He grows with me along with tulip late (tulipa tarda) and behaves very similar. It also grows for many years without excavation and blossoms every year. They are very similar in appearance. The same bright yellow stars on short peduncles, only without a white band on the petals.
Tulip multicolor (tulipa polychroma).
Another mountain view, which for a long time lived in my garden. The plant is quite small, about 10 cm in height, with one or two white flowers with a yellow center. This tulip does not multiply vegetatively at all, so it can get lost with time.
What did he do, alas, I did. But this is more of my own fault.
Lilac Wonder.
Most likely, this is a variety tulip Baker (tulipa bakeri), although somewhere I met and mention of a close to him tulip rock (tulipa saxatilis). However, the description should be rather capricious and inclined to the formation of stolons. The sort of Lilac Wonder is not seen in this.
I will not say that this charming, gently pink tulip, about 15 cm tall, is as unpretentious as the first two species, but he lives with me for a long time. Blossoms are not so enchanting, vegetatively multiplies not very much, but I love it for tenderness.
Grade Persian Pearl.
He is referred to in various sources in mind tulip dwarfish (tulipa humilis) or a beautiful tulip (tulipa pulchella). These species are very close. Height about 10 cm, the diameter of the flower is about 5 cm. It is crimson with a gray tinge on the back and with a yellow base.
Vegetatively it reproduces very poorly, but nonetheless, I live in the garden for years 10 and every year it blooms, although I have transplanted it several times. However, I think that without a transplant, it feels good, as several bulbs, caught on a lawn made on the site of the former flowerbed, have been blossoming annually for many years. By the way, he blooms very early, one of the first among the "savages." Although both species, to which this class is considered, are considered to be rather capricious, my experience of growing Persian pearl says the opposite.

Sort of Little Princess.
This is perhaps the most stable and durable tulip of all my malyavok. But I have no idea what kind of person it is. On the Internet came across a mention in his connection tulip floriferous (tulipa linifolia) and a beautiful tulip (tulipa pulchella), but nothing to do with them was not found.
Tried to use the identifier.
I can be mistaken, but in my opinion, it is very similar to Vitaly's tulip (tulipa whitallii). However, this is not so important. The main thing is that this variety grows in me for more than 12 years, blooms beautifully and with excavation, and without it, it reproduces vegetatively and does not form stolons. He blossoms the most recent of the "savages", at the end of May. The height of the peduncle is about 15 cm, the flower is goblet, orange with a yellow center and a dark base of petals that opens into the sun. Very nice and unpretentious tulip!

Do tulips need to be pruned after flowering?
#
Each florist wants to get on its site large, healthy and bright flowers that will start to bloom earlier than the neighbors.
There is one very unusual and interesting method for growing tulips.
In order for these flowers to be unusually beautiful and bloom before, you need to put a shard under each bulb when planting - a piece of a broken clay pot. In this case, the bulb receives more nutrients, as the root system better absorbs fertilizers when there are air gaps in the soil. Try this method and you will not recognize your tulips.
