Preparation of raspberries for the next season after picking berries
Tell me, what should I do with raspberry bushes after harvesting? Do you need watering and feeding?
Svetlana Rodionova, Moscow Region
Immediately after harvesting raspberry must begin to prepare for the next season. Bushes need to be fed, because the future harvest directly depends on the quality of young shoots. The aisles are applied depending on the state of the soil from 50 to 100 g / m2 complex mineral fertilizer (azofoski, nitrofoski, etc.), as well as organic matter (3-4 buckets of humus, compost or peat on 1 m2).
At the end of summer, especially in dry weather, abundant watering of the raspberry plantation is needed. Since the roots of raspberries are in the surface layer of the soil, lying at a depth of up to 35 cm, the soil must always be moist.
You can achieve this by covering the ground with rotten sawdust, mowed grass, hay, compost and other organic materials.
If there is not enough precipitation in the fall, in the beginning of November you will need water recharge (5-7 buckets of water at 1 m2) plantation, providing a safe winter raspberry.
In autumn, it is necessary to properly form and trim the bush. Varieties of ordinary raspberries bear fruit on last year's shoots.
The stems that gave the harvest in the current year should be cut close to the ground, leaving no hemp, which can become a haven for pests and diseases. Also cut out too thin and unseen shoots. The remaining large stems (7-12 pieces on one bush) are shortened by trimming the crown on 15-20, see.
Small basal growth around bushes is also destroyed, leaving between plants a distance of 60-80 cm, which is necessary for good illumination of the bush. Cropped stems and shoots must be burned. Separate formations require repair varieties of raspberries, bearing fruit on annual and biennial shoots. To obtain two crops per season, shoots in the autumn are not cut off.
But in the Moscow region it is better to use repair varieties only to get a full autumn harvest.

In this case, all shoots are cut out in late autumn, after fruiting. Growing in the spring stems at the end of summer will give a good harvest of large berries. The cultivation of repair raspberry in an annual fruiting cycle has several advantages: stems do not freeze in winter, plants and plants do not accumulate diseases and pests, and facilitates the maintenance of plantings.
After harvesting the last harvest, preventive treatment of bushes from diseases and pests is carried out. From the weevil, raspberry beetle, cauliflower, tick, bushes are sprayed with solutions of insecticides ("Actellikom", "Fufanon", "Inta-Vir", etc.), spending one bush to 1,5 l solution.
From mushroom diseases, raspberry peeled from fallen leaves and seeded shoots is processed with 1-3-percent Bordeaux fluid or 0,5-percent solution of copper chloride.
In the fight against gray rot the rows of pine needles are efficiently filled and the bushes are dusted with ashes. Plants infected with viral diseases (mosaic, infectious chlorosis, curliness, dwarfism), are not subject to treatment. They are destroyed, digging and burning the bushes completely.

PREPARATION OF Raspberries TO WINTER: TIPS, FEEDBACK AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF GARDENERS
When I prepare raspberries for winter, I don’t worry at all about repair varieties, since in late autumn I cut the whole aerial part to the ground. A completely different thing is summer raspberries ...
Be sure to bend the shoots of replacement to the ground, securing them with metal pins. I do this in September and early October. If the work is postponed to a later date, it is possible to break many woody branches by this time. The branches (several pieces at once) are gently tilted in the right direction at first, and then gradually bend down. The optimal distance to the ground - see 25-30. You should not lower it below - a big risk to break. In addition, raspberries in the soil during the thaws can support. Beforehand, I fill wood sawdust or pine needles with at least 10 in pine needles under a raspberry jam. See this “pillow” and lay down bushes.
Under the snow blanket
In winter, I regularly pour snow on raspberries. In little snowy areas, loose soil can be sprinkled on the shoots. So you protect the landing, not only from severe frosts, but also from voracious hares. Often on the snow shelter ice crust is formed. Smash or pierce it to ensure free access of air to the roots.
In cocoon
My friends use spunbond for wrapping raspberries, which are wrapped in bundles of shoots. At the same time the space between the shoots is filled with straw. These cocoons are gently pressed to the ground and covered with spruce branches on top or covered with fallen leaves.
Foliage on the branches
Some gardeners in the preparation of raspberries for winter remove all the leaves from the shoots (if they have not fallen). Because due to the increased humidity, leaves can rot, causing kidney damage (especially in regions where winter is usually wet!). If the winter is frosty and dry, it is better not to remove the foliage - it will be an additional protection of the shoots from frost.

In the end of the growing season, the annual raspberry stalks in the fall completely fall off the leaves. Leaves on raspberry shoots are an indicator of excessive mineral nutrition in summer. Such plants require mandatory winter shelter. At the same time remaining foliage on the shoots must be removed.
