Preventing the growth of sea-buckthorn and other tips for growing it
What to do if the sea-buckthorn is actively growing in the garden
The ability of sea buckthorn to give numerous offspring shoots and unceremoniously explore the surrounding area irritates some gardeners, which is why it is often even removed from the site.
From the point of view of the convenience of growing a plant, this, of course, is a serious drawback, although from a biological point of view it is a sign of great vitality and the desire for self-preservation.
Since sea buckthorn is a culture practically significant for northern gardening, it is useful to learn how to manage its development.
The attractiveness of sea buckthorn as a horticultural crop is its annual and abundant fruiting, early maturity, winter hardiness and outstanding unpretentiousness to growing conditions.
In amateur gardens, alas, there are still instances of its sla-booculturized forms with small pale fruits of sour taste, numerous sharp spines and stubble of root offspring. Rid your garden of these "savages" forever and without any pity. We will discuss only representatives of highly productive varieties with a minimum of thorns on the shoots and bright, rather large and pleasant tastes of orange or red-orange color.
BEFORE EVERYTHING, remember that in varietal plants, root-cropping activity is much more restrained than in wild plants, and with their shoots, renewal is not at all difficult to cope with. Strong offsprings of high-grade sea-buckthorn can be shared, because the demand for them is always great, and all other sprouts in a timely manner, delete together with the root area to preserve the yield and general aesthetics of the plantations. Elementarily block by any means a prohibitive growth of roots, and it, tamed, will never "clog up" your site.

SEA BUCKTHORN - A DOUBLE PLANT.
Determining the sex of a seedling in a leafless state is easy by comparing the buds (see photo). In male plants, the buds are 2-3 times larger, have 5-7 covering scales, and in female plants the buds are small, with 2 covering scales. Male flowers in bunches, brownish-silver, female - solitary, yellowish. In the garden, it is enough to have 2-3 female and one male plant, since it is a high-yielding crop.
Only for the sake of saving the useful area, for example, I grow only female plants, and to pollinate my sea-buckthorn "ladies" I use branches cut from homeless sea-buckthorn "gentlemen" expelled from private farmsteads, which in the district abound.
But keep in mind that this method is effective only with timely application. Sea-buckthorn blossoms inexpressively and early, having missed the time favorable for fertilization, you risk remaining without harvest.
The fruits of sea buckthorn, once removed, will not ripen, so do not rush to harvest. Only mature, brightly colored, juicy drupes are characterized by a sophisticated aroma and a sweet or sweet-sour taste - indirect indicators of the maximum concentration of biologically active substances in them. Noah shouldn’t be late for picking berries, since varietal sea-buckthorn, unlike its wild relatives, is in high demand among blackbirds, sparrows and other birds that are ready to crack down on crops within literally two to three days.
PLEASE NOTE on short, stuck fruit branches without elongated apical shoots. These are blind shoots, they are doomed to desiccation by the program of natural development, so that they can and should be cut without damage to the plant with fruits, while also sanitizing the tree.
Cut I advise not only blind shoots, but also branches with small increments, strongly overloaded with fruits, as unpromising. Remove them from the crown, and remove the fruits in comfortable conditions, without stress and haste. Also cut out all shrunken and broken branches. In late autumn or at the end of winter, form a thin harmonious crown by thinning in the form of a developed system of powerful productive shoots. So you will achieve not only the highest possible productivity, but also the decorative expressiveness of these plants.
Symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria (nodules on the roots) allows the sea-buckthorn to easily extract nitrogen from the air without problems. But this is not enough for the maximum yields, for which we are oriented, so nitrogen fertilizing will be useful. Still I advise periodically to feed sea-buckthorn fertilizer (ash, the crushed shell of eggs, etc.), softly neutralizing excess acidity of soil, which it dislikes. On the phosphorus of sea-buckthorn, like any culture of an intense type, is very responsive.
BLACKBERD CAN FRICK dozens of years, but its potential longevity is not realized in the practice of gardening, tk. due to the increased fragility of aging wood, the risk of a sudden fracture of trunks or large branches under the weight of the crop is increased, which in itself is very dangerous. In addition, the number of root shoots sharply increases in old trees.
So do not wait until the sea buckthorn trees grow old and fall apart by themselves, and in 15-17 years, replace them with quality root siblings or seedlings of new varieties. Spring planting saplings are better tolerated than autumn. To breed varietal sea buckthorn as necessary, you can also green or lignified cuttings, which take root very easily.
SEEDED BOWELS with an abundance of orange-red fruits and linearly elliptic leaves, it is able to revive and transform the garden landscape with just one of its kind, despite the fact that its true wealth is healing and tasty berries, for which it should be in every suburban area.

On a note:
FRUITS OF SEAFOOD colloquially called berries, although, in fact, they are false juicy drupes of oval, round-oval, spherical or ellipsoidal shape, sitting on branches and densely clinging to them. That's why it is sea buckthorn. By the combination of all the healing properties and the content of beta-sitosterol (lowers cholesterol), sea buckthorn is the undisputed leader among fruit crops.
USE ITS BERRIES usually in the form of processed products - raw jams, syrups, fruit drinks, vitamin jelly, etc. Jelly from the pulp of raw fruits - vitamin seasoning for vegetable and meat dishes and even desserts. Like honey, such jelly is stored for a long time without losing valuable properties, so it has the right place in the set of our winter blanks. Fresh and frozen fruits of sea buckthorn can be used as natural dietary supplements to strengthen immunity.

Sea buckthorn was associated with acidic fruits, which are difficult to collect, and what to do with berries is not clear. However, one case has changed my attitude to this berry.
Offered the "interventionist" place of residence
One day a neighbor branch of sea-buckthorn, all covered with berries, “crept” into my plot. The neighbors invited me to collect the fruits, which I did. My first conclusion is that you need to take berries calmly and measuredly, then they do not burst in your hands, and you do not run into thorns. In addition, it turned out that the collected sea buckthorn is not at all acidic.
Therefore, I decided to plant in the spring 2 of the same plants - male and female - in my area. This operation does not take much time: in a sunny place we dig a hole with a depth of 40 and a width of 50 cm, fertilize the soil with organic matter, add a handful of wood ash, drop a two-year-old seedling, water it, and mulch the hole.
Council
A bush of sea buckthorn, planted once, should not be transplanted, so try to approach the choice of place wisely.
Care
Caring for sea buckthorn is simple. Given that the root system is highly branched, root dressing will not give the desired effect. Abundant watering is not required for an adult plant, except in drought. Sanitary pruning is best done in the spring, before the buds have bloomed. Now, while my bush is not yet 5 years old, I just form a crown and remove dried shoots. So it’s still far from anti-aging pruning.
Note
Berries can be eaten fresh, cook from them a delicious fruit drink or jam. Of course, in order to maintain maximum vitamins, heat treatment should be minimal.
It never happens ...
Now I want to plant several more bushes, so in the spring I will try to propagate this plant. From the experience of other gardeners, I know that there are many ways to propagate sea buckthorn, so I think some of them will suit me. I hope my letter will help someone change their attitude towards sea buckthorn and love it, as I did.

Sea buckthorn is one of the most unpretentious shrubs.
But sometimes it is necessary to feed it. So, from the third year of life, sea buckthorn is fed like this: in spring, in April - with ammonium nitrate 20 g / m2 (fertilizers must be scattered around the plant, a little further than the trunk circle) and in autumn, in September, after harvesting - with phosphorite flour 30 g / m2 ( on acidic soils, a larger dose is 50 g / m2). In autumn, potassium salt is also added at the rate of 25 g / m2 or wood ash at the rate of 100 g / m2.

Sea buckthorn is growing in my country house - a female specimen. For her pollination, I usually gathered branches from the "male" plant on the edge of the cottage village. They walked along the branches of their sea buckthorn. I got a stable crop of berries, but somehow small.
This year he acted differently. The branches of "male" sea-buckthorn were placed in containers with water and placed them around their tree. So they stood until they withered. The crop of berries, surprisingly, was noticeably larger than usual.
Next year, I will again give my sea-buckthorn bouquets of "male" branches to find out whether the accident was a high crop. If the result is good, I will continue to put buckets of buckthorn with bouquets of "male" branches under buckthorn.
