Garlic cultivation - planting and care (Oryol Oblast)

How to grow garlic in a damp, lowland place and easily clean it clean
Now it’s good at home, warm and dry, the garden and the garden sleep in the snow (maybe they see me in their dreams), you can leaf through your summer cottages, remember, reflect. Such philosophical evenings are like picking fresh raspberries directly from a twig and there is one, but there is also a bonus: you sit like that, collect disparate thoughts, and there, you look, and some idea visits. Then you will test it on the beds, and the result will be better than last year.
And so I sat once in the evening and decided to summarize all my experience in growing garlic. Moreover, the past summer turned out to be extremely inclement, and therefore constantly had to invent something in the garden right on the go. I'll start my story about garlic with his harvest. Do not be surprised - simply, since I already mentioned the damp summer, all this bleak picture immediately appeared before my eyes. In addition, my site is moist, low-lying. Now imagine where I got such an impression?
So, due to incessant rains, the best harvesting dates were missed. What did you expect? But he was waiting for clarifications in the sky. Usually my patience was rewarded a hundredfold: I’m going to get excited, I will get excited - hop! Good weather. But not at this time. In general, it was impossible to pull further. The edge. It is necessary to clean, even knee-deep in water, otherwise the heads will open and rot.
Lash-picking lever for garlic
Day off. I'm in the country. It is raining - I’m sitting in a hut, quieting down a bit - I rush to dig out the garlic, or rather, pull it out: with my left hand I hold the tops and slightly pull it towards me.
You can’t rush and show your strength here - because of the dampness, the bottom of the head may peel off, and after that it will definitely disappear.
And in my right hand I hold forks and use them to help my left hand. Work moves barely, because the roots of garlic are healthy, they sit deep. To fork (and I along with them) did not fall into the depleted soil, I thought up across the garden to lay a board with a thickness of 5 cm and a width of 30 cm (and its length was such that it would lie on the rows between its edges).
That's why I went about this "box", and pressed the forks to its edge, creating the effect of the simplest lever when working with them. By the way, I always spend harvesting garlic with this tool, because I not only remove the heads from the ground, but at the same time I loosen it (and at the end of the day I harvest the row with a rake and seed it with mustard).
The processing of each ranch started with the fact that he forked the remains of mulch (hay and straw) so that it would not stick and not interfere. Then he tore off the dried leaves of the tops of the entire row and stacked them with a strip about 15 cm wide behind the board on which he stood. What for? This garment was folded with garlic pulled out, the tops in the course of my movement on the bed. And this manipulation is also invented for a reason: the next portion of the excavated heads will be laid not on the ground, but on the tops of the already disintegrated party. And it turns out that garlic and directly with dampness does not touch, and it is better blown by the wind, faster drying out (although last summer all the excavated had to be immediately covered with a film).
Now about how I wielded a pitchfork. I immersed the teeth immediately under the two extreme heads in the row (I tried three, but I managed to grab them, but I couldn’t dig them out, because the garlic sits so tenaciously that the forks are bent), put the forks on the board, clicked on the handle pulled out the heads. And so the whole row.

Water around garlic
And now here's what an interesting moment I want to focus on.
How to get rid of the land that has stuck on the head of garlic?
It seems that there’s nothing to talk about: grab a leaf and shake it off. But dirt will still fall off from the ends of the roots, but not from the bottom. Loam holds tight, especially if it is also raw.
It is necessary to knead it with your fingers. Somehow it will fall off, but under the head itself it is especially damp, and the more there the mice, the more the soil turns into a viscous, sticky mass, similar to plasticine. On the advice of some readers tried to wash the heads. It turns out well: garlic is clean, roots are white.
It is a pity that all this is very long and troublesome. As a result, I began to dry the heads dirty, and then remove the soil, after trimming the roots. But there is also a minus - the knife quickly dulls, because the dried soil for him is like a large emery or abrasive. And why the soil under the very heads is so moist, I realized only this summer after the next rain.
He began to dig and clean, and for some reason turned the plant upside down. And then I goloshe poured grams of 20-30 cold water. It was unexpected, surprising and outrageous. Out of curiosity, the operation with overturning repeated a few more times (of course, no longer over galoshes). Conclusion: the very heads of garlic and water was. Where there is less, where there is more, but was.
Apparently, the rainwater flows down the leaves-grooves, accumulates between the denticles and then seeps to the roots. That's why under the very Don and drier than the tips of the roots.
In the light of these observations, it becomes clear why some summer residents add a little sand to the holes when planting - they by a low consumption of this useful material increase the “flowability” and hygroscopicity of the soil in advance. In theory, this should make it easier to harvest in wet summers. To check this, I did something last fall (but more on that later).
In the meantime, I want to thank the reader who suggested tearing off the upper parts of the shells on the heads (that is, to open the teeth a little) for better drying. Thanks to this, I saved my wet crop last summer. And he, by the way, in spite of everything, turned out to be good. The average weight of the heads was 74 g, and each had 4-6 cloves.
Sat down - got up
Now I want to talk about landing. Sort for over now for more than 25 years I plant the same (the name, as usual, I do not know), once in 3-4 year I update it with bulblets. Under it, I have a row of 10-12 m long and a width of 1 m.
I spend landing under a marker and a peg. As the first I use the old self-made rake with two surviving teeth (the interval between them is -23 cm), and as a peg I use a broken shovel from the shovel, which I sharpened at one end and put a mark on it with a landing depth of 8 cm (between the holes in a row I leave 7-8 cm).
Landing on the lace in the grooves seems to me long and uncomfortable. Probably the whole thing is a habit. Take a chance and try? But I do not see a clear advantage with this method of planting (I will not say the opposite that my technique is absolutely sinless). In addition, changing a habit is like changing a job. Here you need to know for sure that it is worth it.
Everything is clear with garlic, it is updated with bulbs, and my habit, whatever one may say, is a quarter century. How to be with her? Will it be possible to forget it without a trace? Some of the great ones said: sow an act - reap a habit, sow a habit - reap a character, sow a character - reap a fate. Cool said. Like. Our people! Summer residents! The mood of the soul is visible. And for sure: the garlic planted incorrectly - that’s the fate of the broken. And no concessions (joke). But seriously, I don’t know what to do with the habit. Maybe one of the readers will share his story on this subject?
Moreover, without a marker, by eye, I can’t get straight lines, no matter how I try. And when I get tired at the end of the day, I don’t get to the marathon at all, I would be planted as soon as possible, I can’t even hold a marker in my hands. And so it turns out. While I am squatting, poking a hole with a peg, laying out cloves - everything seems to go smoothly. And as he rose to his full height, he looked down at the ridge Ku - my mother! Rows of fan or diagonal!
Here you have the eye-level. Garlic, of course, does not matter, but how do I put it on? And then how do I loosen up? So with a marker any better.
But there are drawbacks to this method: you have to work either squatting or getting up (fitness is a good thing, but sometimes tires), and it is difficult to catch the right soil moisture. In too dry soil, the edges of the holes showered, in too wet, the soil sticks to the peg and falls asleep. I tried to soak a peg in a bucket of water - it does not help. Maybe the soil is like that? Now I'm experimenting with its improvement.

Himself a synoptic
However, I will return to what I promised. Last fall, I planted half of the garden without a hitch. The second - with the addition of soil mixture to the wells, consisting of sifted and mixed sand and compost (1: 1), a glass of ground limestone and 2 tbsp. l crushed granules of azofoska (all this on a bucket of a common mixture). I think that such a composition is better than ordinary sand.
I figured that each hole needs about 50 g, made a measurement from the cap from the aerosol spray can, timed it and began to dance squatting around the garden. Bottom line: landing time with bedding has doubled compared to the usual one. It turns out: that cleaning in the rain, that planting with bedding are equally good. Let's see how the harvest will be held and what the harvest will be next year. True, all this is already in the power of the elements. For example, someone who has a car knows that it’s worth washing it, it will definitely rain the next day — he washed, that he didn’t, and tried in vain. So it is here. And therefore - attention, forecast! Since I put soil under the cloves, the next summer will be hot and dry. Yes, and it’s better, in the sun the crops are good. And we all have more fun. And from the drought there are hoses and sprinklers. Oh, if only the weather "did"! I would buy a car, but already have an umbrella ...
To summarize the results, I re-read everything written. Remembered, there is another way to withstand endless rains. Before, I somehow did not pay attention to him, but, apparently, now easy ways are not for me. So: just two weeks before harvesting garlic, cover the bed with a film. It's simple. In the time remaining until the beginning of the season, I will more precisely define the best terms for using this method, I will prepare the material and be sure to write off the results.
Why are we, summer residents, alive? And our inexhaustible desire to get good harvests. It's good, and not some record, because we are dacha, not merchants (and with a surplus of vegetables and fruits, one is a hassle). And what is this, good harvests? I have four criteria for this:
- that was enough for food and preparations:
- that such food should give a charge of vivacity, strength and health;
- so that it would be relatively easy and simple (we will come up with difficulties ourselves);
- so that the crop simply pleased (I dug up two nests - a bucket of potatoes!).
Are you laughing? So, you already have a thin, intangible "tool" that you can not touch, clean, but without it you just can not get a crop. So, the solid one will be. Many thanks to everyone for reading it out. Dare, friends, in daring, summer residents do not age! Hello everybody!

Sometimes I plant garlic not only on the allocated bed, but also where there is simply free space. I sometimes forget about such "free" garlic, and the heads remain to winter in the ground.
In spring, a whole bush of vitamins grows on this place. Once I decided to experiment and specially planted under the winter, not denticles, but heads of garlic. Identified them in the trunks of apples and pears, so that garlic at the same time frightened off their scents of pests.
What are the results? I did not grow large heads under the trees, but it seemed to me that there were fewer pests. And most importantly - already in early spring I had plenty of tasty greens.
