Cauliflower cultivar Violet (photo) - reviews, planting and care
Growing cauliflower varieties Violet
Cauliflower varieties of Violet from Sicily (Di Sicilia violetto) - my favorite. In our country, this beauty arrived from the largest island, located in the Mediterranean Sea. Purple from Sicily is very popular not only in its homeland, but also in many countries of Europe and America. Its bright inflorescences resemble the flowers of lilac and effectively look at the garden. The taste of this cabbage is so tender that young heads can be eaten even in raw form. And thanks to the unusual coloring of the dishes, they turn out to be bright and cheerful, the kids weave them with pleasure.
Cultivate this cabbage can be both seedling and seedlings. Since this is a medium-late variety, when seeds are sown in the open ground of the head ripen in September October. And if you want to get young inflorescences as early as possible. Violet from Sicily needs to be grown through seedlings.
I use both ways.
Since cabbage is hard to tolerate transplantation, I sow seeds on seedlings in peat tablets or cups.
Sowing I spend in several terms with an interval of 10 days. In each glass I put on 2-3 seed. When there are shoots, I leave the strongest sprout, the rest I delete. As a rule, seedlings are ready for planting through 5-6 weeks from the day of seed sowing.

First time seedlings I feed with a solution of boron and molybdenum or complex fertilizer for seedlings of cabbage, second time - a liquid solution of the mullein. Before landing on a permanent place, I necessarily make the plants harden.
I plant seedlings, too, in several terms: in early May. and then in the II and III decades of May. Days of sowing and planting are planned according to the recommendations of the lunar calendar.
For cabbage, I choose sunny open places on the site. She needs a well-fertilized soil and regular watering. In the soil in advance I make a mullein or compost, and also add superphosphate (20 g / m3), boric acid (10 g / m2) and urea (30 g / m2). In addition, you can apply fertilizer directly to the prepared wells.
By the way, the method of growing cabbage on vegetable cleaning has proved to be a good one. Therefore, I began to apply it annually. I put potato, carrot and banana peel into the hole and mix a spoon of ashes with compost, then plant the seedlings and cover with a plastic bottle with cut up and bottom. Protected in this way, the plants are less sick, they are not troubled by the wind, and the cabbage flea can not get to them. When cabbage grows up and gets stronger, I remove the bottles. I noticed that the seedlings grown under the bottles in the future overtake their brethren, landed in the ground without protection.
For watering cabbage and other vegetables, I prepare special biofertilizer. I fill the bucket with mown nettles or other grass, I add 2-3 st. spoons of last year's jam, 20 g of dry or ordinary yeast and mix. After 2-3 days, dilute the resulting fertilizer with water in a ratio of 1: 10 and use it for irrigation.
The summer harvest of cabbage of Violet variety from Sicily is removed in the same way as broccoli. From the main shoot I cut off the grown up kochanchik, and in 2-3 weeks in its place appear 6-7 new inflorescences of smaller size.
The last harvest of cabbage is collected in October, it can be stored until the new year. I dig up the plants together with a clod of earth and set it upright in a wooden box, which I lower into the cellar. If the head did not have time to ripen, and its leaf socket is not frozen and well preserved, after harvesting it will slowly grow and increase in size. The optimum temperature for storing cabbage in the cellar is 2-5 ° C.
Young inflorescences of the Violet variety from Sicily can be steamed, boiled, fried, added to vegetable casseroles. It is interesting that the color of cabbage cooked on steams practically does not change. In addition, the less exposed to cabbage heat treatment, the more it will retain vitamins.

Benefits of cauliflower
Italian dieticians recommend once a week to replace the usual garnish of potatoes with a cabbage dish, preferably from broccoli or cauliflower varieties Violet from Sicily. It combines the ideal form of cauliflower and the delicate flavor of broccoli, as well as a balanced amount of vitamins and trace elements.

Has planted in the past to year for the first time a cauliflower, looked after her all the season.
She seemed to grow well, but looked like a burdock - only leaves. Heads are not tied. Why did it happen? What mistakes could I make in leaving?

There are several reasons for this phenomenon. This may be an incorrectly selected variety that has been sensitive to weather conditions in your area. Violation of the timing of planting, since cabbage forms heads only at air temperatures up to 18 °. Abundant feeding of cauliflower leads to the fact that a large number of leaves are formed, but inflorescences do not form.
To feed cabbage should be no more than three times during the growing season. The heads are not formed when the plant growing mode is not respected: illumination, hardening, watering. When eliminating the above reasons, cabbage forms strong large inflorescences-heads.
