How to apply the method Mitlajdera for cultivation of vegetables in house conditions
For the first time I heard about the method Mittlaydera in 2000. I went to the courses and in the same year I applied the technique in my garden. The results were stunning!
I still keep an open garden garden. But seedlings did not work out. The technology is designed, in my opinion, for farmers, or at least those who live in the garden. We are a city family, we spend three days a week in the garden. For us it is more entertainment, a platform for experiments. And to put together boxes, to procure cubic meters of soil mixtures, to disinfect equipment, to buy special lamps, to store all this somewhere, to convert the balcony into a nursery ... to be honest, laziness. And I want my tomatoes, so I had to adapt Mittlayer's method for home conditions.
MITLADER, SEEDS AND TERMS
For some reason our gardeners like Siberian seeds, they say, it's cold and cold here. As a person who grew up in Siberia, I will say: there is nothing in common between the Siberian and the Urals in the summer. In Siberia, the summer is sunny, hot, rain comes three days later for the fourth, and after it again the heat. And in the Urals in 2014-2015, for example, the temperature lasted almost all summer in the zone 12-15 ° and rain was almost every day. For such conditions, Dutch or St. Petersburg seeds are more suitable. This is important for crops and open ground, and hothouse: without additional lighting and heating, as, for example, I have, the difference between closed and open ground is not that great.
Proven for years, the varieties Yamal, Far North, Gina, Dubok, Subarctic and Shuttle are open-ground plants, but in a film greenhouse they grow faster and produce larger fruits. Indeterminant tomatoes for our summer (115 frost-free days) are unprofitable: 4 ripened brushes are already a holiday, the rest often do not even have time to start (except for cherry tomatoes). Sowing different hybrids - everything is growing, but the yield that is indicated on the bags in our latitudes does not work. But well done peppers: the winner’s cup, Dennis, Romeo, and of course, the magnificent Russian size (“bast shoes” grow 25 cm) - everyone grows healthy, the yield is close to the one declared on the package. I sow eggplant Diamond and Black Prince for assortment: by mid-April they have palm-sized leaves, you won’t get enough windowsills.
It is known that, depending on the variety, nightshade seedlings should have a run in time of 60-75 days. But according to Mittlider technology, plants develop faster, so I sow tomatoes, peppers and eggplants no earlier than March 9th. And those in the open ground - after the 15th.

MITTLAYDER SOWINGS
Nutrient nutrition does not matter: in the natal period, the sprout uses seed resources, and then I start the feeding program. Strict Mitlayderovtsy use a mixture of 1: 1 from sand and sawdust. But it should be harvested from autumn, but I do not. Therefore, I buy
I warm up the soil in the oven (you can microwave, a double boiler, just a large saucepan), so that all the pathogenic things that could be there died.
How long does it take to warm up? Above the surface of the ground, which I poured with water and poured into the dishes layer of 5-7 cm, the steam should rise and "hover" for another 10 min. Then on the 1 bucket of soil I add 1 art. spoon mixture № 1 and 0,5 art. spoon mixture № 2, all carefully mix and unfold in the container.
As the dishes for sowing, boxes from "Doshiraka" showed themselves perfectly. They are light, warm, compactly placed on the windowsill. It is convenient to write plant names on them.
I compact the soil, cut the grooves. Sowing depth - 3 seed thicknesses. Not height, but thickness. That is, over the seed, say, of a tomato should be about 5 mm of land. Then the sprout will not spend energy, making its way through the 1,5-centimeter thickness of the earth, but will save it for growth. The distance between the seeds is one seed, i.e. I sow thickly. This is called the "law of turf": closely spaced seeds germinate amicably, the roots, intertwining, develop better. I close the seeds, pack well and ... pour boiling water.
Yes, it’s boiling water, right from the stove. Having put on the box a clean plastic bag so that the hole is on the side, without closing, I put the box on the floor, under the battery. This imitates the natural environment - the seed lies in damp earth, and the heat comes from above. Seeds germinate on average on the 4th day, and it happened that on the 3rd. Here they need to be immediately raised and sprinkled with an immunostimulant.
THEY WERE UP
Having laid a heat insulator - polystyrene strips on the windowsill, I place baking trays from the oven on them (they do not allow the nutrient solution to spread). It turns out warm and clean. I put the boxes with seedlings on baking sheets, pour them with clean water.
Did you get the first real sheet? I start the feeding program with mixture No. 3 (it is also mixture 2a). The calculation is this: 25 g of the mixture per 10 liters of water. Pour until water through holes in the bottom begins to flow out onto a baking sheet.
Strict Mittlayderivtsy drain this water and use it for irrigation the next day. If you, like me, have simple earth in the boxes, it will be necessary to water the mixture once through 3 with clean water. In theory, it is necessary to water directly on the leaves (the concentration is chosen so that they do not burn), but for the window sill in the apartment it is too messy and long. Therefore, I water the soil, and the leaves are sprayed from the spray gun until completely wetted. Humidity is different for all, the frequency of irrigation, too, but the soil should be wet always. You will quickly understand how much it is necessary to pour, so that the excess liquid evaporates itself and does not have to mess around, draining the remnants.
PICKING
For the first pick, I use jugs from yoghurt. While watering the seedlings copiously with a solution of the fertilizer mixture, almost to the dirt, I fork the plant with a fork and transfer it to the jar without breaking off the roots. And, holding the weight, I fall asleep with the soil to the cotyledonous leaves. Pepper and eggplant do not bury me by a millimeter. Again, I water and spray the immunostimulant. Through 2-3 weeks the plants will grow to a height of up to 10 cm and develop an 3-4 leaf. There comes a time of a hairstyle.

A HAIRCUT
I cut off all the leaves with scissors, except for the top two, one of which will be well developed, and the second is still very small. The view, of course, is terrifying, but then the plants cease to stretch, the stalk thickens. Leaves that grow back after clipping will be larger and greener than before. The next 2-3 weeks I water the seedlings as before. Plants form the 4th leaf - and the time comes for a second dive.
SECOND PICKING
Here we need larger containers - pots with a diameter of 10-12 cm or half-liter plastic glasses or Tetra Pak packaging. Abundantly watering the plant with a fertilizer mixture, I extract a lump of earth with roots and place it on the bottom of a large pot. I fill up the free space with soil. Part of the stem goes underground. Watering again, I spray with an immunostimulant. The next 2 weeks, the plants will build up additional roots on the sprinkled part of the stem, forming a powerful root system.
CLOSING
A thermometer mounted on the windowsill among the plants should show about 10-15 ° at night, 23-25 ° in the daytime. A little trick: if you have a solid double-glazed window, lay a strip of polystyrene along the entire windowsill between the glass and the plants. Then it will be possible to open the double-glazed window. If the seedlings freeze, a purple hue will appear on the leaves. This is precisely from the cold, and not from an imbalance in nutrition, because in the fertilizer mixture is a complete set of all micro and trace elements.
GARDENING IN THE GARDEN
Tomatoes and peppers, even grown in the “Mittlider home-style” mode, are more like bonsai - sort of mini-trees: strong thick trunks, dark large leaves, short internodes. Often they already bloom. This is usually considered a disadvantage, but when transplanted into a greenhouse, such seedlings do not get sick, do not delay in development and do not dump flowers. We can only protect it from return frosts and snow in early June. And hope that it will be summer.
PREPARATION OF MITTLAYER MIXTURES
- Mix N 1 - add 5 g of boric acid or 40 g of borax per 50 kg of lime flour (dolomite flour, garden lime). To stir thoroughly.
- The mixture N "2 - contains the main nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium plus magnesium and two trace elements (boron and molybdenum).
- Mixture N9 3 (aka 2a) is an additional mixture of N9 2 enriched with microelements (iron, manganese, zinc, copper).
Sold ready mixes, but if you want a guaranteed result, do it yourself. Buying and composing the mixtures will take you two hours, but taking into account the expense (1 spoon per bucket of water), you will have enough of them for many, many years, the cheapest soil. It is important that it was loose and the roots did not have to waste energy, breaking through it.
